Chapter 194: A life changing amount of money
"You better make sure to reach out more often, young man, or I will show up at your workplace now that I know where you work. I’ll even make a big deal and embarrass both you and Ricky." May warned, hugging Andrew tightly in her arms as they got ready to leave. Andrew chuckled, hugging her back.
"Well I can’t have you doing that. Max might even hear about it and then you’ll embarrass him as well." Maxwell cleared his throat.
"I would not find it embarrassing. I would simply invite May up to my office while I have Mr. Newman go grab both of you." May laughed, releasing Andrew to hug Maxwell tightly. Maxwell was still awkward about being hugged by others who weren’t Andrew, and May could tell. She didn’t let that bother her though, and hugged him tightly.
"I’ll admit it, I was a bit worried that you were using Andy in some way, but I am glad to see that that doesn’t appear to be the case. What you could use Andy for, I’m not exactly sure, but I was still worried." It was at that moment that Andrew realised that they hadn’t told them what his Mom had really been up to, and he froze.
He turned his gaze to Maxwell, who gave Andrew a narrow-eyed look. Andrew laughed nervously.
They were just about to leave! If he brought it up now, they wouldn’t be allowed to go until he explained every last detail and as much as he loved them, he was tired and wanted to be alone with Maxwell.
’Well, actually, Mom left me quite a sum after she passed from working, so that could have been an option, but Max has his own company, so it’s pennies to him." May let Maxwell go, drawing back to stare at Andrew in surprise. Even Ford, and Richard seemed surprised to hear that.
"She left you a huge sum?" Richard repeated, and Andrew nodded.
"Yeah. It’s more complicated than that, but today has already been pretty long, and as much as I love you guys, I think I’ve reached my limit for today." May frowned, but Richard, who worked in the field of experimentation and human testing, nodded. He placed his hand on his Mom’s shoulder, giving it a squeeze as he smiled. Ford stepped forward, giving Andrew a hug next.
"Well, I am glad that all of that work she did meant that she was able to leave something behind for you. Don’t go blowing it on anything silly. Or have you already blown it on silly things?" Ford asked, a teasing tone to his voice as Andrew hugged him back.
"No, I haven’t spent any of it. Like my father’s money, it’s been kept in an account for me. I’ve been living off of my salary this whole time. Haven’t even touched a dime yet." Andrew told them as Ford moved to Maxwell, giving him a heartfelt hug that had Maxwell in a bit of a daze.
The reason why Rose and Jordan weren’t in the sitting room to say goodbye to them was that Jordan had an asthma attack and needed a few minutes to collect himself. It was something that was rather common, and they were working with a Doctor on it, but that was all they could do. Andrew had said goodbye to Rose then, and had been bullied into giving his phone over to have her number put in, and then forced to message her as well.
Jordan had said that he was fine, and looked forward to speaking to them more when the family wasn’t as tense, and Andrew appreciated that he was understanding that Andrew’s problems had taken up the dinner. He seemed like a good match for the over-eager Rose, and it was clear that she cared deeply for him.
Jordan’s small actions showed that he cared for her just as deeply, he was just more quiet and thoughtful about them. It reminded Andrew of May and Ford, actually, but he would save that tease for a later day.
"Thank goodness. Just a question, and you don’t have to answer, but how much are we talking? You have a ballpark?" Richard asked, elbowing Andrew before he himself hugged him. Andrew laughed, the smile feeling forced on his face.
"A lot." Andrew told him and Richard laughed.
"But like, how much? $100 000? More?" Richard was clearly teasing, joking with Andrew but Andrew was having a hard time finding this funny. When he had seen the numbers in one account, not including all of the other assets that she had put in his name, including the shares he now had in the A & D Firm, Andrew’s head had spun.
"Ricky, I’m serious, you’re going to faint if I tell you." Andrew told him and May, sensing how serious he was being, went white.
"Your father level of money?" She asked, her tone hushed and Andrew shifted uncomfortably after Richard stepped back. Richard and Maxwell were at an awkward standstill. Maxwell was still Richard’s boss, so hugging him the same way everyone else had apparently was a little strange. Maxwell was the one who sighed, and offered his arms and Richard grinned, hugging Maxwell tightly before he released him, watching Andrew.
"Yeah. Cause your father was a piece of shit, but he was a loaded piece of shit." Richard said and Andrew coughed.
"Way more. Mom dwarfed whatever he gave us until it looked like pennies." May nearly choked, and Ford started laughing. Richard looked like he was in shock, while Maxwell was smirking.
"Pennies, Andy? How much are we talking? She told me that he sent over $15 000 monthly, so that’s just-" May cut herself off, shaking her head. Andrew knew that this was going to delay them, and this was just the money portion. He shifted on his feet, before he let out a deep sigh.
"Millions. Multi millions. Mom was...very successful at her job." Andrew muttered. "I didn’t even realise it until after I met Maxwell. The Beckett’s had to tell me how famous my Mom was." He did feel a little ashamed about that part, but what could he do? They never spoke about her job in depth, and when he asked, she told him she was just an accountant who used to be a florist. She was just his Mom, and he didn’t think she would lie to him.
She technically hadn’t, either.
"God, your Mom was showing him up till the end, wasn’t she?" Ford laughed, and Andrew seemed a little confused at what he said. May smacked Ford’s arm.
"Ford." She warned, but he was laughing too hard, and his shoulders were shaking.
"What? That waste of space left him, what? About 4 million all said and done with the interest? And Dianne just wouldn’t let that stand. She had to prove that she could take care of Andy no matter what. God, I love her." Ford kept laughing until May’s lips were even twitching.
Andrew had thought that they were going to be shocked by the money. It was a life-changing amount of money. If Andrew wanted, he could never work again, but he just wasn’t that kind of guy. But the Gates family instead, got stuck on the fact that his Mom, his lovely, wonderful Mother, would not, could not, let the man who marked her stand above her even in child support.
Andrew felt a snort leave his nose, before he covered his mouth and started laughing.
"I didn’t even think of it that way. You’re right." Andrew’s shoulders shook and Maxwell’s small, gloved hand tucked itself into the crook of his arm.
"I am devastated I will never be able to match her level of pettiness, but I greatly appreciate that she made sure that Andrew was set for life. Which, if the business goes under, does mean I have a safety net to fall back to." Maxwell teased, and Andrew rolled his eyes.
"Oh don’t even joke about that. There is no way that your business will go under. I doubt even a crazy lawsuit would even do you in." Andrew told him and Richard laughed.
"You would be surprised by how expensive some of the ingredients the omega team has to buy for experiments, Andy. Dr. Liu sometimes tells me about what she has to purchase and I nearly break out into a cold sweat." He warned and Maxwell nodded. He gave Andrew’s arm a squeeze.
"So there is a chance you could be a sugar daddy at some point." He teased, his expression warm and Andrew coughed.
"Alright. I think on that note, we should leave and let the rest of you get some rest. Thank you so much for having us, and I promise I will do my best to not make you wait so long next time. Maybe soon, you guys can meet Kim and Jenny in a different context, and we can all share memories of Mom." May and Ford nodded, their expressions warm.
"Of course Andy. You let us know. We’re partially retired, so we have a bit more wiggle room." Andrew was surprised to hear that and May shrugged. "What can I say? I tried to retire and they nearly fainted." Her grin was a bit malicious as she smiled. "I’m apparently still too valuable to replace. Hopefully they will send me my replacement soon so I can whip them into shape, the same way I was sent in to replace someone else after I had made a name for myself. Get home safe. Do you need another scarf, Maxy?" May asked, clearly teasing but Maxwell shook his head as he wrapped it around his neck and head.
"No thank you. This should be enough to get us to the car." He stated rather calmly and Ford laughed.
"I hope, if you two ever plan to have children, that they inherit Andrew’s temperature capabilities for your own safety. You could spend a fortune on clothing and heating alone." Ford teased, but his eyes were warm. Maxwell laughed as Andrew’s chest tightened.
"Well, we’ll see. We still have a lot of time ahead of us before we need to make any decisions like that." Andrew waved at the Gates family as he opened the door and shuffled Maxwell out into the cold. Maxwell swore, wrapping his scarf tighter around his face and head as he marched towards the car and Andrew closed the door behind them.
Soon, they were inside the car, the heat blasting as the car warmed up and Maxwell placed his hand on top of Andrew’s.
"They meant nothing bad by that." He told him and Andrew sighed.
"I know. I really know that. He didn’t even put pressure on us, he was teasing, but I just..." Andrew hated how wound up he was after those few words. He hated that Maxwell needed to comfort him too. Maybe he was just feeling vulnerable after everything that he had to reveal today. He hadn’t been like this when Maxwell had not been well.
"Baby, it’s okay. Whatever you decide, I’m fine. I promise. Now, let’s go home, alright? And maybe...look up places we could move to?" Maxwell suggested and Andrew shot him a look.
"What?" He was surprised by those words as Maxwell pulled on his seatbelt, checked his mirrors, and pulled out onto the street.
"I agree with Richard, especially after he put it into perspective. We probably aren’t safe, and as much as we have security, what if they have someone like you around, Andy? A true alpha who can overwhelm others? They could do that to our team, and get to us when we’re asleep. She’s crazy enough to do something like that too. So, I would love to look over some places with you, and we can make it a place that both you and I like. Not just my house, not just your house, but our house."
