Chapter 193: No one is going to hurt themselves for me
Maxwell’s slow, careful exhale next to him told him that Maxwell might have been considering this as well. Andrew’s heart began to pump in his chest.
"Andrew, breathe." Maxwell ordered again and Andrew did as he was told, shock filling his system.
"I...I’m in more danger?" Andrew muttered and Maxwell sighed.
"It was one of the reasons we got you another identity." Maxwell told him and Richard snapped his fingers.
"That does answer why I have to call him Dr. Nice at work. It’s a good first step, but I know how tenacious I could be. Especially if he was a successful test subject." Richard warned and Andrew groaned. He didn’t want to have to rely on his father’s family.
"Could we...trust Kim’s family?" Andrew muttered quietly, and Maxwell grumbled.
"I don’t know. I can’t rule them out as quiet backers to that crazy bitch’s antics. We’ve been trying to follow the cash flow to her accounts, but have been coming up blank. They have to be getting funding from one of the true alpha families, but I don’t know which one." Maxwell muttered. "It’s the only thing that makes sense. I’ve been hesitant to reach out to Kim for her help because it could be her family. You know that they weren’t supportive of who she chose as a partner. They could have gone behind her back after she did that to try and find a way to awaken one of her siblings or cousins." It was a very valid statement, but it was clear that the rest of the Gates were lost.
"Who is...Kim?" May asked, wiping her eyes with the back of her hands. Andrew, who was now able to look around the table, turned to stare at Maxwell.
He wasn’t free of the curse of the tears. His blue eyes pools, and his eyes a little red. Andrew’s chest squeezed. He’d made him cry, even if it wasn’t intentional. He hated that.
"I’m sure you’ve met Kim before. She’s apparently been around since I was a kid, but I can’t seem to remember her. Her partner, Jenny, used to babysit me when I was younger." Andrew started and May grew suspicious.
"She’s been around that long, and I don’t remember her?" May stated, and Maxwell, coughed, before he pulled out his phone. With one hand, he pulled up several of the photos on the internet that there were of her, including her standing in front of an older version of the A & D firm. He slid the phone towards May, and Rose got up so that she could stare at the photos as well.
May’s expression relaxed after a moment as she kept scrolling.
"Oh. I just knew her as K. Your Mom must have been trying to hide her identity from everyone then." Andrew nodded.
"Yeah. Because she and Kim are cousins. Mom was almost adopted into the main family, but I think she turned it down? It’s why Kim and I don’t have the same last name." May stared at Andrew for a long moment.
"Wait. Give me a second to process this. Are you saying that you’re related to this Kim?" Andrew nodded. "And Kim is also part of a true alpha family?" Andrew nodded.
"I’ve already asked. It is not possible that my true alpha tendencies came from them. Mom is too far removed." May sighed, sliding the phone down the table to Ford, and Richard, who were waiting. They looked over the images before sliding the phone back to Maxwell. He tucked it away safely.
"Okay. So, the second son I’ve been raising and who ran away comes from two true alpha families? Was kidnapped and experimented on fairly recently, and has been living in the city for at least five years and never came to see me?" Andrew flinched as her voice raised. "Andrew Knox, you are lucky your Mom isn’t around because otherwise she would be just as pissed as I am right now. You are so lucky that Maxy is around to take care of you. I already know how much you probably moped around after all of this happened. Why didn’t you think to call me? Or the fucking police? Is it because of the fucking true alphas? Fuck ’em. You find out who it was, and good old May will go deal with them." May was filled with rage, and it was Maxwell who stepped in to soothe her.
"He was, absolutely, but I think he did earn it. Dr. Smith talked some sense into him, but I don’t think he considered you guys because he blocked out everyone who cared about him. I think I was the only person he let in because he didn’t really have a choice. We lived next to each other." Maxwell swallowed. "That being said, I will not let you know who did this to him if you plan to go in by yourself. I will be killed by Richard for letting his Mom do something so reckless, and then Andrew would leave me. I cannot have that happening." Maxwell’s tone was non-negotiable, and May’s brown eyes widened. "I will, however, keep you in the loop if you promise to let my family handle this. We have...ties, that may have been severed, but I know who I could reach out to if I needed help."
"Max, no." Andrew was not going to let the man reach out to that side of his family for him. They hated Maxwell. Maxwell’s jaw firmed.
"I only would do it to get one thing out of them. My grandmother likes me on that side, and as far as I know, she’s still alive." Andrew drew himself up to his full height, shaking his head.
"No. I am not going to allow you to do that." Andrew was serious about it. He was not going to let a man who had sent his Mom fingers in a box interact with Maxwell, even if he was his grandfather. Maxwell smiled at him.
"People say that we are quite alike. I should at least find out how much, right?" Andrew narrowed his gaze.
"No. I’m not going to let that man hurt you, emotionally or otherwise. If you decide that there is no other option, I’m going with you." Maxwell frowned.
"I am not going to make you a target for his anger." Maxwell said. Andrew frowned.
"And I don’t want you to do the same. I’m going, even if I have to hide in the trunk. You think your family would let you go on your own?" Maxwell grew angry.
"They wouldn’t care." Andrew snorted.
"Your Father would be the first person against this. Especially if it’s for me. We’ll figure out another way, because I am not going to let that man anywhere near you. Not after the stories I’ve heard of him." Andrew was putting his foot down, and he wasn’t going to budge. Maxwell seemed surprised about this, and his expression showed it.
"Is this...another of those dog tendencies your Mom used to talk about?" Maxwell asked, crossing his arms and Andrew’s lips twitched.
"Probably. I mean it Max, no. There have to be other options before we even consider that. Hopefully, he’ll be dead by that time." Rose started coughing, and Jordan helped her by patting her back.
"Jesus Andy. Are we talking about the man you don’t want Maxwell to meet or your father?" Rose joked and Andrew shrugged.
"Hopefully both, honestly. If he died, I would be having a much easier time dealing with my issues, I think." Andrew told them and Ford chuckled. He pushed back his chair, coming over to the two men before he wrapped his arms around them. Maxwell stiffened, while Andrew relaxed into the hug.
"Well, I am just glad that you made it out on the other side, Andy, and that we are able to speak like this. Thank you, Maxy, for making sure that Andy was able to survive such a horrible experience and that he is here now. I do not need a gift after that, knowing what you have done for our Andy." May pushed her chair back, coming and joining them. Maxwell seemed to be growing more uncomfortable by the moment.
"Truly, thank you Maxy. You cannot know how much we appreciate what you’ve done. I couldn’t care less about where Andy came from, or any of that nonsense. I just am glad that he is safe, he is okay, and that he has people around him who care about him and want him to thrive. You have proven that not only do you care about him deeply, but that you would put yourself in danger to keep him safe." May sighed. Richard and Rose joined in, and Andrew wanted to laugh at how uncomfortable he looked. Especially squished under the weight of the four Gates family members.
"Whoever I bring into the family is going to have huge shoes to fill." Richard mumbled. "We have a very talented artist who makes the family proud, and then we have Maxy. A man who literally kept Andy alive with his scent alone." Andrew laughed while Maxwell’s ears turned pink.
"It wasn’t my scent alone." He protested and Rose smacked his shoulder as the family separated.
"Don’t sell yourself short. If I could still smell you, I would. Mom?" Rose asked, turning to her Mother and May, hesitantly, sniffed Maxwell before she pulled back, thoughtful.
"Huh. He’s kinda...spicy? Like fall spices. What’s that drink that girls like during the fall?" Rose froze.
"A pumpkin spice latte?" Rose said questioningly, and May snapped her fingers.
"Yeah, he kinda smells like that, but a little more pizazz." Andrew grew upset for Maxwell.
"He does not smell like a psl. Not that there would be anything wrong with that, since I do like them, but he has more depth to him than that." Andrew defended and May snorted.
"I just said that." Andrew frowned.
"You did not. You said he was like a psl with more to it. I’m arguing he isn’t like it at all." May snorted.
"Oh whatever, maple pancakes." Rose let out a screech.
"He does not smell like that, does he?" Andrew’s face burned as May looked at him smugly. He was so angry that she was making fun of him. He couldn’t even get too angry though. She had done the same to Rose.
"Shut up! At least I didn’t smell like 12 week old flowers!" Andrew shouted and Rose sputtered.
"You take that back! Lots of people like rose perfume! And you couldn’t even smell me back then!" The air thinned, filling with the boisterous bickering of Andrew and Rose, with May stepping in to needle them just a bit.
Nothing was forgotten, but the tension was gone, and now the family could enjoy each other in peace.
