Chapter 188: Meet May, professional homemaker
Andrew and Maxwell barely made it up the stairs to the front door before it swung open and Andrew found himself wrapped in the arms of a smaller, just as fierce version of Richard. Her grip was tight, her arms like a vice, and Andrew laughed as she held onto him.
"Andy, you no good hoodlum. How dare you wait for so long to come and visit?" She was pissed, Andrew could tell, and his heart ached. Was she going to be mad forever? Or was this just a temporary thing?
"I’m sorry." Andrew told her, truly meaning the words. "I don’t know what came over me. I think I...I think I might have thought that after all that I had done in England that you wouldn’t want to see me." Andrew told her, and May Gates reared her head back, glaring up at Andrew. Her brown eyes were harsh, narrowed, and Andrew noticed she had a few more wrinkles then he remembered on her face.
"You damn fool. Do you honestly believe that I would give a rat’s ass about something like that? I have Rose as a daughter, Andy, and there is nothing you could do that could outdo anything she’s ever done. My heart is good and ready to hear about any shenanigans you got up to while you were away. Speaking of," May peeked around Andrew’s arm, meeting Maxwell’s shivering gaze as he held the bonsai. "Welcome to the family, Mr. Beckett. That’s the last time I will be calling you that since Ricky nearly had a heart attack when I said I wasn’t going to call you by your last name. Not if you were dating my adoptive son." She rolled her eyes before she shoved Andrew out of her arms and turned to Maxwell.
Maxwell was shivering in the cold, but straightened his back, letting the older woman look him over. He was clearly nervous, more nervous then when he had been meeting Kim. It was cute, and Andrew felt his heart soften even more for the other man.
"H-Hello Mrs. Gates. I completely understand where Richard is coming from. It must be a little bit awkward having your Boss come over for an informal family dinner." Maxwell told her with a smile. "I...brought a gift. I was told not to bring baked goods, so I went in a different direction. Your husband collects bonsai trees?" He suggested, and suddenly crashing could be heard behind her.
Shortly after, a man about a head taller than May poked up behind her, his hand automatically going to her waist as he peered over her. His blonde hair was peppered with grey, and his grey eyes were wide and bright. His skin was tanned from the sun, even in winter, and he was staring at the thermal bag, practically salivating.
"Did I just hear bonsai tree?" He asked, and Andrew felt his lips tug up. So did May’s, and she rolled her eyes, slapping the older man on his shoulder. She turned, stepping into the entryway and pushing him back into the house, giving them enough space to actually move in from the doorstep.
"Let them get in the door, would you? Then you can take the precious cargo out of his hands and bother him about it. Rose is already here, Andy. No doubt you could tell by the car in front of yours. You two should talk about that. About as snazzy as whatever she’s driving. Her partner, Jordan, is also here. I think you’ll like him. He’s about as cute as your Maxy." The door had barely closed behind them when Maxwell jerked, surprised at being called that. Andrew smirked.
He bent, pressing his lips as close to Maxwell’s wrapped neck as he could while still being heard. Maxwell’s layers of scarf meant he couldn’t get too close, but he didn’t want the others to overhear him, especially Ford, who was still in the small space with them.
"I didn’t get Andy from my Mom. I got it from May. She likes to add a y to everyone’s name." Andrew told him and Maxwell nodded.
"You never told me their names." Maxwell muttered darkly and Andrew laughed as Ford Gates took the precious bonsai tree from Maxwell’s hands and skittered away with it, giving the two of them some privacy to take off their coats and shoes. Andrew appreciated it, while Maxwell pouted slightly.
"I thought you would have looked it up already." Maxwell made a face, and it was clear that he’d hit the nail on the head.
Andrew took that moment to take in the sitting room that felt like it hadn’t changed. It was a smaller space, and had never really been used unless it was for overflow, storage, or there were too many kids and they got sectioned off to this area. The main floor of the house was composed of this space, the kitchen/dining room, and the living room. A small bedroom that as Richard had said, had been converted into his Dad’s hobby room was also on this level. The upper level had the other two bedrooms, a bathroom, and then the basement was where May had her canning area set up as well as a chill, easy living room.
It was a decent size house, and it brought back a lot of Andrew’s childhood memories to see that it hadn’t changed much inside. They got new carpet, but so far, the paint was the same, the couch was the same, the rickety door for the closet for the coats was the same.
A sense of peace filled Andrew as he glanced around, and he easily took Maxwell’s coat and scarf and hat, hanging them on a thick coat hanger before putting it into the closet. Andrew closed the door after hanging up his own coat, taking off his shoes and was about to head for the kitchen when Maxwell placed a hand on his shoulder.
When Andrew glanced back, Maxwell had a rather concerned look on his face.
"Are you alright?" He asked and it was what he needed to hear. Closing his eyes, he rested his head against Maxwell’s shoulder, taking a deep breath.
"I’m fine. That interaction was...it was good. I’ll be okay." Andrew told him, meaning it, and Maxwell reached up, running his hand through his hair.
"You say the word and I can get us out of here. If you’re feeling off, I can have Dr. Smith waiting at a coffee shop nearby. You are his most important patient right now, and he would have done that out of friendship as well, alright?" Andrew nodded, appreciating his support.
"Thanks Max." Andrew told him, wrapping his arms around him and giving him a squeeze.
"Of course." Maxwell said it like it was obvious, and Andrew felt his lips turn up into a smile. Tilting his head, he pressed a soft, chaste kiss against his neck before he pulled back. He rubbed his eyes under his glasses before he nodded, and turned towards the kitchen. He offered Maxwell his hand, and he only hesitated a second before he took it, giving Andrew’s hand a squeeze.
Stepping into the kitchen, Andrew was shocked by how modern it looked. They had opened up the space, knocking out the wall and flowing into the living room. The living room was gone, and had been turned into an actual dining room, and the kitchen had grown in size.
It made sense. The kitchen had always been May’s domain when she was outside of work. That she had waited this long was actually what surprised Andrew.
Andrew looked around the space, the dark washed cupboards, the large two well stainless steel sink, the stone countertops. It was quite fancy, and Andrew felt himself whistle. There was a small, two seater table shoved against the wall and two people were sitting there. Andrew would have paid more attention to the person who had their back towards him if he hadn’t met Rose’s gaze.
Rose, as much as she had aged, hadn’t changed at all. Like Maxwell, she was dressed to the nines. Her blonde hair was pulled back in a rather elaborate braided look, and her eyes had a smokey makeup look that made her brown eyes sparkle. She had a smile on her face, and had been leaning her long, graceful arms against the table but she rose up as soon as Andrew entered the room.
Andrew released Maxwell’s hand as Rose came over, wrapping him up in a hug.
"You damn kid. I can’t believe you missed my wedding." She told him, squeezing him tightly. Andrew hugged her back just as tightly.
"I’m sorry Rosie. I really didn’t mean to." Andrew told her and Rose sighed. Her grip was painful, a step above her Mom’s.
"I’ll believe that when I see it, Andrew Knox." She warned and Andrew felt his heart squeeze. "Well," she said, pulling back. "We should introduce our better halves, shouldn’t we?" She raised her eyebrow, gesturing to her partner. Andrew swallowed, hoping that they weren’t as mad at him as she was.
