Chapter 189: Not a dinner table topic

Andrew turned his attention towards Rose’ eye-catching partner and found that the...man? Was looking at them.

If he was honest, he never expected Rose to end up with a man. It wasn’t a discredit to the man she had married, but she had dated women, omega, beta, alpha, all through his childhood. He had expected that the person sitting in the chair with their back to him with short fuchsia hair would have been a woman.

He did not expect it to be a tired looking man with soulful dark blue eyes, soft, plump lips, and a thin frame. The man screamed omega, and Rose seemed to be incredibly proud.

"This is Jordan, Andy, or as Mom calls him, Jordie. He is my better half. Forgive his tired appearance, he just finished a rather elaborate piece for some rich idiot." Rose bragged, her chest puffing up as she spoke about her pair.

Andrew huffed, not one to be outdone by her.

"He sounds rather accomplished, Rosie. I’m proud of him for you. Have you met my better half, Mr. Maxwell Beckett? Or, as your Mom calls him, Maxy? He owns his own company, is the CEO, oh, and your brother works for him. He is changing the world for everyone with a secondary sex." Andrew bragged, his own chest puffing. The two men who were being bragged about shared a look.

Maxwell was biting his lip, trying not to laugh, while Jordan just seemed used to it.

"Good evening, Mr. Beckett." Jordan offered his hand, and Maxwell took it. They ignored their better halves to speak to each other.

"Good evening, Jordan. You can just call me Maxwell or Max, whatever you feel more comfortable with. Was the rich idiot you were finishing a piece for Mr. Wang, perhaps?" He asked and Jordan’s eyes lit up.

"Yes, it was. How did you know?" He asked and Maxwell smiled.

"Well, I’m not such a fool that I wouldn’t research who I was visiting if I had the capacity to do so. That being said, your name has circulated a few times from my board of Directors to add to our building." Jordan’s expression brightened, the tiredness leaving his face.

"Oh my gosh, really? Even knowing that is a big deal." Maxwell grinned.

"We actually gifted a piece of yours to my brother as part of his wedding gift." Andrew flinched.

"We did?" Andrew asked and Maxwell snorted.

"Well, you were a last minute addition, Andy, so I can understand your confusion." Andrew gasped, Rose gasped, Richard gasped from where he was coming down from the bathroom upstairs.

"My god, Mr. Beckett. You didn’t need to kill him." Richard said, and Maxwell chuckled.

"What? I only said it because we were worried about how stable your pheromones would be. You didn’t need to worry about something silly like a gift while trying to adjust to who you were going to be for the rest of your life." Maxwell blinked innocently, but Andrew, and everyone else, knew better.

"You intentionally said it that way." Andrew told him, frowning, and Maxwell laughed, opening his arms. Andrew went to him readily, wrapping himself around Maxwell to get comfort. Maxwell patted his back as Andrew buried his face into his shoulder.

"Awe. Don’t be too upset. I would have just gone by myself if things hadn’t changed." Maxwell told him and that didn’t make Andrew feel any better.

"You would have had everyone pestering you." Andrew muttered darkly and Maxwell snorted.

"I wouldn’t have drank at all, Andrew, because of that. I probably wouldn’t have spent the night either, and would have left after the three parties in the helicopter we arrived in. It wouldn’t be my first time doing it." Maxwell told him and that only made Andrew more upset.

"Wait, I’m missing something." Ford said. "Did something change about you, Andy?" Richard groaned.

"Dad! Come on! Look at him! He’s practically doubled in size!" He was exaggerating, but he had gotten taller and wider. Andrew sniffed, letting Maxwell go to show off his new height. He barely fit in the house and Ford whistled, while May frowned. She crossed her arms, leaning against the counter.

"I thought something was different. Ricky said that there would be a surprise, so I assumed it was your partner. I had no idea that it was you yourself." She inhaled deeply, and frowned further. "You two aren’t mated?" She asked next and Andrew flinched.

"You uh, would still be able to smell me even if we were." Andrew muttered and May’s frown deepened.

"That cocksucker." She rumbled and Maxwell shot Andrew a look. He shrugged. "I had hoped that you would have at least just been a beta like Ricky, but the damn man’s genes had to get involved. I’m sorry Andy." She was genuinely apologetic, and Andrew ducked his head, embarrassed.

"It’s okay, it wasn’t like I-" Andrew cut off, realising what he was about to say. He was about to tell them what really happened. He covered his mouth, turning to Maxwell. He knew it was his story to tell, and that they had told some people, but Andrew wasn’t sure if this was the right thing to do. Maxwell took his hand in his, giving it a squeeze.

"Maybe after dinner." Maxwell told him, and Andrew felt his whole body relax.

"Why wait if it’s something important?" May asked, turning when a timer went off and Andrew felt his body jerk. He had wanted to move as soon as he heard it, but Maxwell held him in place. Ford chuckled, along with Richard.

"Well, it might ruin dinner." Maxwell told them, and May not so quietly slammed the tray of whatever she had in the oven on the counter next to it. Several towels were already laid out so that it didn’t hurt the counter.

"Whatever he has to tell us couldn’t ruin anything. That’s my third kid, Maxy." May warned and Andrew swallowed. He squeezed Maxwell’s hand while Rose and Richard stared at them.

"It’s not...Max didn’t do anything to me, May. He’s actually been very supportive when I..." Andrew closed his eyes, sighing. "Trust us, I’ll want to tell you, but I should wait until after dinner is served." Andrew told them and May and Ford, sensing it was something serious, both frowned.

"Are you in trouble, Andy?" Ford asked, serious, and Andrew felt a slightly hysterical laugh leave his lips.

"Uh, not anymore?" He said and the older couple shared a look.

"So you were in danger, and it’s probably safe to assume that Maxy got you out of it?" May suggested and Maxwell let out a shaky breath.

"No. Andrew got himself out of it, I just caught him as he...rebuilt." Maxwell danced around it, but it was clear that the atmosphere in the room shifted. Richard, who had a bit more information since he had been working with Andrew in this time furrowed his brow.

"You manifested recently, yeah?" He asked and Andrew nodded. Rose crossed her arms, moving to stand next to Jordan who still sat at the table and Jordan reached out, touching her waist. May continued to work away at dinner while Ford remained close to her as well.

Maxwell squeezed his hand.

"Andrew, breathe." He ordered and Andrew gasped, unaware he’d been holding his breath. Maxwell watched him, concerned as Andrew continued to breathe. "To answer your question, yes. He did manifest recently. That’s why he has pretty much daily visits and check ups with his Doctor. Most at his level of manifestation wouldn’t even be going out, let alone working, but we all know that Andrew is a focused man. He nearly killed himself trying to behave like everything was normal." Maxwell sighed. "But, again, we should save this for after dinner. It’s a long story, and I’m sure that there are happier conversations to be had considering you haven’t seen each other in such a long time." Maxwell said, smiling softly.

He was in work mode, but Andrew appreciated it. As much as the words were choking him, wanting to get out, he found that he couldn’t say them. It wasn’t like with Kim and Jenny. They had known him, but it hadn’t really been the same.

Andrew hadn’t remembered them, while with May, Ford, Richard and Rose, he had known them. He remembered them. He had thought about them late at night when he’d been at school completing his new chosen degree in England, and had wondered how they were doing without them. He hadn’t forgotten them, he had just felt too ashamed to reach out to them when he came back.

Telling them that he had been kidnapped and experimented on? That was...

Andrew couldn’t breathe again.

Maxwell yanked him down, dragging him back into the sitting room to press his face against his throat.

"Breathe, Andrew, or I will call Dr. Smith here." Maxwell warned, a thread of desperation in his voice as Andrew shook. He wasn’t even holding onto Maxwell, and instead had his face buried into shoulder, inhaling over and over.

"That isn’t normal." Rose said from the doorway, Richard behind her. Maxwell sighed, running his fingers through Andrew’s hair comfortingly.

"It’s actually not outside of the realm of possibility. Andrew has latched onto my scent as a comfort, and only seeks it out when he is in a situation that is overwhelming for him. He usually is able to handle himself, or, should I say, he’s gotten way better, but I guess thinking about telling you has sent him over the edge." Maxwell smiled as Andrew gasped like a fish out of water. "He cares deeply about you guys if he’s reacting this way. I just wish he wouldn’t work himself up this much."

"Did he take the alpha medication he was testing for the company today?" Richard asked, work mode on and Maxwell laughed.

"No. Could you go into my coat pocket, left hand side, and grab it, Richard?" Maxwell asked and Richard pushed Rose out of the way, heading towards the closet. Andrew heard the squeaky door open, Richard rustling around, before he came stomping back over. A pill case rattled, before a blister pack was opened and Maxwell’s fingers gently pressed against his lips.

"Swallow, Andy. It’ll help." Maxwell told him softly and Andrew did as ordered, taking the pills into his mouth. It took a few more minutes of inhaling Maxwell’s scent over and over before Andrew could finally raise his face from his shoulder.

His face flushed as he realised that everyone was watching them, even May.

"I-I’m sorry. I didn’t mean-"

"Shut your mouth, Andy, and go sit down. I’ll get you a plate ready, so you just take a minute. Maxy, you too." May ordered and Maxwell smiled, nodding. He took Andrew’s hand in his own, raising it to his lips and Andrew felt like he was going to faint.

"Of course, May. Come on Andrew. You should sit down for a minute anyway. Dr. Smith would make you every time you took the pills, remember?" Andrew nodded, following after Maxwell as he spoke to everyone for him while he gathered himself again. They were sat near the head of the table, May sitting on one side of Andrew, while Richard sat on the other side of Maxwell.

Jordan and Rose were across from them, with Ford sitting next to his wife. Once Andrew and Maxwell were sat at the table, everyone behaved as if nothing had happened, even Jordan. Andrew was appreciative of that as everyone came and sat down, chatting to each other as they began to eat.

Andrew was glad that he wasn’t left out, and as the medication he hadn’t taken today thinking that he was going to be fine started to work, he began to relax again. Maxwell noticed the change and gave his thigh a squeeze under the table, smiling at him.

"Back among the living, Andy?" He teased, his eyes warm and Andrew wondered what the hell he was going to do without him? Die, probably.
