Chapter 187: A return home
Chapter 187: A return home
"Do I look okay?" Maxwell asked, giving Andrew a spin as he watched over him in the bedroom. They were about five minutes out from leaving for Richard’s parents place, and Maxwell had asked him this about 3 times.
Andrew chuckled, adjusting his socks on the outfit that Maxwell had laid out for him. It was probably the nicest he’d looked going to their house in his life, but he wasn’t going to tell Maxwell that. He was trying to make a good impression.
Andrew was not going to be the one to tell him he really didn’t need to. His looks alone were probably going to win over the Gates family. It would make sense when he met Richard’s Mom, and his Dad.
"You look perfect." Andrew told him, glancing up at him and smiling. "Now come give me a kiss before I go to warm up the car." Andrew held his arms out, puckering his lips and Maxwell laughed. He went to Andrew, pressing several kisses all over his face and Andrew grinned. He loved when Maxwell was this affectionate with him.
He loved that most people never saw this side of him too. It was a nice little secret for just him, and he appreciated it greatly.
"You’re my Maxy." Andrew told him, wrapping him in his arms and inhaling his scent.
"I’m yours?" Maxwell repeated, a slight warning tone to his voice and Andrew chuckled.
"Well, who else am I going to belong to?" Andrew asked in return and Maxwell softened. He grabbed Andrew’s face, tilting it back to meet his gaze. Maxwell scanned his face, taking in everything before he cheekily took Andrew’s glasses away and crawled into his lap, kissing him deeply. He ran his hands through Andrew’s hair, messing it up after he’d just put so much effort into making sure it was perfect.
"Damn right." Maxwell muttered against his lips, Andrew’s face flushed from Maxwell’s sudden attack. Andrew felt like his heart was going to beat out of his chest, and now he was the one who wanted a little snack before dinner.
Maxwell, as if sensing where Andrew’s thoughts were going, gave his face a squeeze.
"You know we can’t. That would be rude, and if you wanted to do something like that you should have told me before I put gel in my hair." Maxwell warned, climbing out of his lap and adjusting his jacket and pants again.
Andrew pouted, adjusting his cock in his pants and Maxwell laughed. It didn’t help that he was blurry, so Andrew couldn’t even see the cocky smirk that Maxwell had on his face. He didn’t need to though, to know that was exactly the look the man had on his face.
Grumbling, Andrew grabbed his glasses, getting to his feet as he slid them onto his face. Maxwell was still laughing at him as Andrew went outside to warm up the car for them and the bonsai so that neither his precious partner, nor the plant would go into shock.
It was cold outside, but not as cold as Maxwell was making it out to be. He really was like the bonsai that they were transporting to the Gates family, and that thought made Andrew laugh. It was cute that Maxwell was so strong and brave when it came to anything but the cold.
He felt that if they ever took any vacations, Maxwell would do exceptionally well in warm locations, and would never agree to go on a skiing trip if he could help it. He could already see him bundled up until you could barely see his eyes. He’d probably wear goggles, if Andrew was honest with himself. It made him wonder if Maxwell had poor circulation, because not all omegas were like him.
He’d have to bring it up when they went to the Doctor on Monday.
~
Shortly after, Maxwell was all bundled up, the car ready, and Andrew had already brought the bonsai out and placed it safely in the backseat. Maxwell decided he was going to drive so that if Andrew wanted to drink, he could.
Alcohol was something that they hadn’t experimented with much. As much as Andrew had taken a few drinks or sips of drinks while at Ben’s wedding, he’d been very careful. He also hadn’t needed to operate a car after he’d had a few drinks, so just to be safe, Maxwell was going to drive. It was the responsible thing to do, and Maxwell had offered it up before Andrew could say anything about it.
It didn’t happen often, so it felt a little strange when Andrew crawled into the car and Maxwell was adjusting everything to his preferences. Maxwell cast him a look, a smile on his face as he pulled on his seatbelt.
"I’ve already put the address into the maps, so we should be there a little early if everything goes to plan." Maxwell told him excitedly and Andrew melted. It meant a lot to him that Maxwell cared so much about meeting people from his past. While Maxwell didn’t think that his family was good for him, he cared deeply about the people who had looked after Andrew and his Mom.
"Perfect. I’m in your hands, Maxy." Andrew told him and Maxwell smiled, before he threw the car into reverse and got them onto the road.
~
Andrew always liked the area that his Mom had chosen for them to move into. It was a residential area filled with normal, stand alone homes, as well as several apartment buildings. It felt like a community, and the streets were usually friendly with everyone who lived on each street. Sometimes they had thrown parties and had let the kids roam free. They were fond memories for Andrew, even if his Mom was in very few of them. She had been a busy person, and now Andrew knew why. It had actually been the Gates who had taken him out the most, especially for those kinds of events. With his Mom’s permission, of course. May Gates wasn’t the kind of woman who would take someone’s kid without checking in with the parents first.
Andrew had lived in a similar kind of apartment building to what he had been living in before he started dating Maxwell, and Richard had originally lived in the apartment next to him. That was how they had grown as friends so quickly. They used to play outside together, go to the same school, and walk home from school together. Richard had been his childhood friend, the only one from elementary school that stuck around after he shot up like a tree.
His Mom had gotten a promotion at work and they had eventually moved out and into a stand alone house just a few blocks away. It had not deterred them in the slightest, and the two had remained steadfast friends until Andrew had gone off the deep end and moved to England to get away from everything and grieve.
It did make Andrew feel a little guilty. He should have done better. He should have reached out sooner, but he was finding out that even if he had tried to hide himself away, being with Maxwell exposed all of the things that he had tried to run away from. He’d met Richard, Maria, and he was sure he was going to meet more people the longer he was with Andrew.
He didn’t know if it was because he had been a scholarship student in a school that people paid a lot of money to go to, or if it was because the people who had gone to the school worked in fields that Maxwell interacted with, but he just had a suspicious feeling.
"This is a nice area." Maxwell commented. "Everyone takes care of their yards here." Maxwell commented. "Do you think they have the same gardener?" Andrew started laughing. Maxwell glanced at him in confusion as Andrew continued to laugh. That was so cute.
He thought they all had gardeners.
"Angel, no one can afford a gardener around here." Andrew told him, his shoulders still shaking. Andrew wished he could see Maxwell’s ears right now. He knew that they had to be bright pink.
"Well then they are doing a great job landscaping on their own!" Maxwell sounded embarrassed, and Andrew chuckled. He would have patted his shoulder in comfort if he thought it would help soothe him, but he knew better. Maxwell would take that terribly, and as he was driving, he didn’t want to upset him more.
"Ah, over here Maxy. Just pull up behind that car in front. My guess is that it is Rose and her partner." Andrew told him and let Maxwell pull up behind the black Mercedes in front of them. Maxwell narrowed his gaze, staring at the care before them.
"Rose is?"
"Richard’s sister, and an alpha." Maxwell nodded.
"Perfect. I just wanted to make sure I had the right woman in my head. Andrew took a minute once Maxwell had turned off the car to take in what was essentially his second home throughout his childhood.
The house itself hadn’t changed much. They had replaced the roof, given it a fresh coat of paint. The door was different, the paneling on the windows refreshed. The landscape was beautiful, courtesy of Richard’s Dad’s hands.
Andrew bit his lip.
It had changed. Quite a bit. He was just in a bit of denial. He had missed a lot, and now his chest ached as he realised it.
Sighing, Andrew bent his head, pressing it against the console in front of him. He knew he was going to worry Maxwell, but there was nothing else he could do. He felt terrible.
"Are you alright, Andrew?" Maxwell asked, worried and Andrew let out a harsh laugh.
"I feel like a bad son." Andrew told him and Maxwell remained silent, but placed his hand on his back, patting him.
"It’s okay. They’ll forgive you." Maxwell told him, confident and Andrew laughed again. He hoped that Maxwell was right, because Andrew wasn’t so sure.
