Chapter 180: I’m not even that kind of doctor yet
"Good news!" Maxwell exclaimed as he came back, sliding into his seat next to Andrew with a devious grin on his face. "Kim agrees with me, and she’s going to send them an email tomorrow saying that a surprise inspection will show up in the next week. I think that’s too generous, but she wants to torture them a little." Maxwell shoved his phone back into his pocket, before turning to grin at Andrew. "She was also a little suspicious of their behaviour and reviews anyways. The way they treated you was just the final straw." Maxwell’s smile was so cheeky and proud that Andrew wanted to steal it from his lips.
He resisted, especially since he still had Hewett in his lap, but Maxwell could see the struggle in his expression. His eyes creased at the corners as he smiled at him.
"Well, I can’t say I agree with you two, but I won’t fight you on this. You two are the experts in this situation. I’m just...here for the ride. Oh. Oh no. What if this gets back to Dr. Cox?" Andrew felt a sudden swell of panic fill him and Maxwell reached over, placing his hand on his shoulder.
"We still stick to the plan, alright? We truly were there to check the place out, and look what we found? They were lying about certain things, and treated us like shit all because they perceived us a certain way. I bet they didn’t call her Dr. Cox either." Maxwell soothed Andrew and Andrew sighed. He nodded.
"You’re probably right. I’m just worried she’ll get upset." Maria frowned, confused. Zack wasn’t in a better state.
"Dr. Cox?" Maria asked and Andrew nodded.
"Yes, a new colleague. Her daughter went to that daycare for a short time before she was practically kicked out." Maria’s eyes widened, and she covered her mouth.
"Is her daughter’s name Bella?" She asked and Andrew nodded, suspicious.
"Yes, she is. How do you know that?" Andrew asked and Maria looked slightly uncomfortable.
"Well, because I heard about what happened. Her daughter was bullied by some older kids because of the fact that her Mom was a single Mom, and that she wasn’t from a rich family. It escalated to Bella getting hurt if I remember correctly, I just don’t remember how." Maria said. Andrew glanced at Maxwell, and Maxwell glanced at him.
Maxwell was pissed. Andrew could tell. It had to be because someone had hurt one of his employees. Andrew was pissed that a kid got hurt and the fucking daycare had tried to cover it up.
"Those monsters." Andrew rumbled, and Maxwell raised his hand, running it up and behind Andrew’s neck.
"Baby, control yourself. You’re in public." Maxwell warned and Andrew exhaled harshly. He’d been doing so well, but hearing that a kid got hurt really pushed him over the edge. Glancing around, he noticed that several people looked uncomfortable, including Maria and even Zack. Andrew winced, closed his eyes and tried to calm himself down. "That’s it. Good job." Maxwell murmured, encouraging him and Andrew sighed, before he froze.
"Wait, are you okay? Didn’t I-" Andrew’s eyes flung open, worry coating his words. Maxwell shook his head as he squeezed Andrew’s neck, his fingers warm through the leather.
"No Baby, I’m fine. I get a much more serious dose of you fairly often, so this much won’t hurt me. But it can upset others around us. Think of it as immersion therapy in my case." Andrew nodded, relieved. He couldn’t get the image of how Maxwell had gone down in the past at one of his outbursts out of his head.
"You’re sure you’re okay? I didn’t hurt you again?" Andrew asked desperately, softly, and Maxwell shook his head, his smile tender.
"No Baby. I’m fine. Look? I’m not even shaking." Maxwell told him, holding up his free hand for Andrew to stare at. Andrew stared long and hard, making sure that Maxwell wasn’t lying before he relaxed. Hewett wiggled in his arms and Andrew glanced down to find the baby’s face scrunched up before he began to pat Andrew’s arms.
"S’okay." The small baby said and Andrew couldn’t be mad at him at all. All worry faded as the small baby tried its best to comfort him. Andrew bent, pressing several kisses to the boy’s soft cheeks and Hewett giggled. He pressed his sticky hands against Andrew’s face as he laughed, and Andrew felt as if a weight had been lifted off his shoulders.
Relaxing once Hewett had had enough, Andrew glanced up at Maria and Zack. Both had thoughtful expressions on their faces, but he had a feeling they were thinking completely opposite thoughts.
"You’re really good with kids, Andy." Maria said and Andrew gave a nervous smile.
"I don’t think I’m that great with them." Andrew replied and Maria sighed. She rested her elbow against the table before leaning against her hand.
"You were really good with Kailey when she was a baby too. I wonder...if they knew you were going to be an alpha too? Or if they just knew you were going to protect them." Andrew flushed.
"Well, all children are precious, Maria. I would never hurt a child." Andrew protested. It was obvious to him that was something you never did, and Maria smiled. Her gaze slid to Maxwell, before she slid her gaze back to Andrew.
"Hmm. Sure. I agree with you, but we did just talk about how a daycare hurt a child, and that sent you into a rage deep enough that you released your pheromones. I even sensed them, and I shouldn’t be able to do that since I’m mated. I’m just saying, when Max said you should go into pediatrics, I think you should consider it. It would be a good fit, Dr. Knox." Andrew’s face heated and Zack blinked.
"You’re a doctor, Andy?" He asked, excited and Andrew sighed.
"Not a medical doctor, but yes." Maxwell scoffed at Andrew’s response.
"Nonsense. He just got accepted back into a program. Andy is going to be a double Doctor soon. We’ll have to call him Dr. Dr. Knox." Maxwell looked so pleased by the news that Andrew couldn’t even be mad at him for bringing it up. Maria’s eyes lit up.
"Oh, I’m so excited for you Andy! Oh, Max, pass over your phone. I’ll add Zack’s phone number as well. That way, you can send me Andy’s phone number since his hands are full and we can schedule a meet up outside of this. You aren’t getting out of my clutches anymore, Andy. Not when you have such an adorable partner who likes to brag about you." Maria said with a wink and Andrew flushed, but couldn’t hide his smile.
Maxwell easily handed over his phone, letting Maria work her magic before he took the phone back.
"I look forward to meeting up with you. How old are your other two children?" Maxwell asked and Maria lit up.
"Well little Kailey is almost 9 now, and I swear it was only yesterday she was Hewett’s size! Hewett was a surprise, a good one of course, but Trevor is almost 6 now, so there is quite the age gap between the three of them. It could be worse, but we’ll need to be more careful now. I don’t think we can manage four kids without more help, and I would rather not." Maria sighed. "I know that nannies are important, and step in when parents can’t, but we can afford to have me as a stay at home mom, and I would like to keep it that way. We have help, of course, but I’m the children’s main person to turn to outside of Zack and family." Maria said, puffing her chest out.
It was very much like Maria, and Andrew was glad to see that she hadn’t changed. Zack stared at her speaking, watching her be enthusiastic, and Andrew didn’t miss how much love was in his gaze as he looked at her.
Andrew was pretty sure Maria was going to have to be the one to make sure that there wasn’t another ’accident’ like Hewett, not Zack. That man would give her anything she wanted. Even another baby.
"Oh, I agree with you on that. Amir and I, my brother-in-law who is expecting, are in agreement as well. We can afford not to have nannies, and my Mother was the same way. Amir is excited to be a parent, but he’s a big worrier, which is why we wanted to take something off of his plate. He trusts us, and much like the children, Amir found some comfort in Andy’s pheromones. I am curious about that, but Andy’s Doctor hasn’t said it’s a bad thing." Maria seemed very interested in that.
"Huh. That’s very fascinating." She muttered, and Andrew sighed.
"My Doctor is Michael Smith. Do you remember him? Darker than me, about 6’1-6’2? Charming smile?" Maxwell flicked his head towards Andrew when he said that, but a light went off behind Maria’s eyes and she gasped.
"Oh! The one who hit on Emily and she turned him down?" Andrew grinned.
"The very one. He finished his degree and now works with alphas. Almost exclusively?" Andrew hadn’t actually asked Michael about that. He would have to the next time he saw him. Maxwell narrowed his gaze at Andrew.
"Charming smile?" He questioned and Andrew chuckled.
"Max, you can’t say that Michael isn’t a charmer, can you? The man has used his good looks against anyone he can." Maxwell frowned, crossing his arms.
"Even you?" He questioned and Andrew laughed.
"No. He never got to. I shut him down early on. I was a beta, remember? Michael used to try to charm the alphas and omegas at school. Gained quite the reputation for himself. People used to say he was trying to sleep his way to the top." Maxwell seemed surprised by that news, but Hewett interrupted their conversation. He started sniffing, his eyes watering and Maria got up, Zack following suit.
"No matter how much he likes you Andy, nap time still calls. Alright Hewie, say goodbye to your new Uncles, alright? They’ll visit again I’m sure." Maria told her son and Hewett rubbed his eyes, blinking as those amber eyes began to water.
"Bye bye." He said, his voice warbling as he fought tears. Andrew melted, getting up to hand over the precious bundle.
"Bye Hewie. Have sweet dreams." Andrew cooed softly and Hewett buried his head in Maria’s breasts, hiding his tears from Andrew. Maria patted his back, a soft, motherly smile on her lips.
"He doesn’t want to show you his tears. What a cutie." Maxwell and Zack were shaking hands, but when Zack turned to Andrew, he didn’t hesitate to pull the other man in for a hug. He gave Maria a side hug, and Maria did the same to Maxwell.
"It was wonderful seeing you two again. Now that we all have each other’s numbers, don’t be shy to reach out. I have a bit more free time than Maxwell currently since we had to take some time off for my manifestation, but I think once the new year hits we’ll both be more free." Andrew told them and Maria and Zack nodded.
"Of course. It goes both ways." Maria warned and Andrew laughed.
"Don’t be shy to stop by the company. Just ask for Dr. Nice at the front desk and they’ll know to call me." Maria seemed even more confused.
"But that’s not your name." She said and Andrew and Maxwell shared a look.
"That’s a story for another time, when Hewie isn’t exhausted. Have a good night you two." Maxwell said kindly, staring at the small boy in Maria’s arms. Maria nodded, her expression warm as well before she wrapped her coat around herself tightly. Andrew and Maxwell waved as the family left, before turning towards each other. Andrew and Maxwell sighed.
"Are you ready to do that pretty much all over tomorrow?" Andrew asked him, and Maxwell sighed, crossing his arms.
"Well, Richard doesn’t have a partner and child, does he?" Andrew shook his head.
"Not as far as I am aware, and neither does his sister." Andrew said. Maxwell looked slightly disappointed when he looked over at him.
"Then I guess I’ll manage."
