Chapter 179: Two powerful bloodlines in one giant body

"That seems like a bit much, doesn’t it? That’s someone’s home." Andrew said and Maxwell groaned.

"It’s part of what they signed up for when they wanted an apartment in the building your Mom helped build and finance, Andy. Kim probably sees it my way as well, and she would be delighted to help you out in any regard. Should I make the phone call? Your hands are full, aren’t they?" Andrew was still holding Hewett and Maxwell was using that against him.

Maxwell gave him a warm smile, pulling his phone out of his pocket and quickly sorting through his contacts before he held the phone up to his ear. He pushed away from the table as soon as he pressed dial.

"I’ll be back shortly, alright?" Maxwell told the group before he waved and turned. "Oh hello, Kim, this is Max speaking. Do you have a moment?" Andrew sighed as his voice faded into the distance and Maria and Zack stared at him. Maria snorted, covering her mouth before she full out started laughing.

"He barely let you get a word in. Gosh, you just let him. Who’s Kim?" Maria asked, her eyes bright and Andrew groaned.

"Kim is basically my aunt. She helped my Mom start the company." Andrew told her and she nodded, while Zack seemed even more confused.

"Your Mom started a company?" He asked and Andrew nodded.

"Oh yeah. She started it when I was a kid. I apparently blocked a lot of those memories out, since Jenny, Kim’s wife and mate used to babysit me but I can’t seem to remember that. But yeah, Kim’s been a part of my life for a long, long time. I somehow didn’t inform her of my Mom’s passing and so she’s basically been treating her as if she had run away from her problems, but she wasn’t." Maria’s expression dropped, her eyes filling with sadness.

"Oh Andy. That’s awful. You must feel terrible." Andrew couldn’t help the bitter smile that crossed his lips.

"Yeah. I don’t feel good about it, but they didn’t make me feel bad either. They were upset that they hadn’t checked up on me since they were tasked with helping me grow up from my Mom. They didn’t really get to do that, so they’re trying to make up for it. They’re well meaning, and kind people. They also hate my father, so that’s a good mark for them." Maria nodded, while Zack seemed to be grappling with everything Andrew was saying.

"Okay, I still feel a little lost. Your Mom started a company with your aunt, Kim, and somehow bought the land we’re sitting on right now? The same land that resides in one of the most exclusive parts of the city? The same area that we, the Johnson’s, had to fight to get an apartment in?" Zack asked and Andrew nodded. Zack’s eyes went wide.

"Yeah. Hard to believe huh? Apparently my Mom had a very good business sense. I had no idea. She’s just my Mom, you know?" Andrew said with a shrug.

"Jus my Mom." Hewett parroted and Andrew fucking melted.

"That’s right." He told the small boy in his arms, and was rewarded with a beaming smile. Maria clapped her hands, excited.

"Good job, Hewie! What a smart boy you are!" Hewett beamed, giggling as he was praised and Zack softened as well.

"Alright, if that’s the case, could you tell me what company your Mom and your Aunt started?" Zack asked carefully. Andrew had no idea why he was being like that. Andrew had no problem telling him, especially since he was married to Maria. Sure, it might be a little embarrassing, especially after Maxwell’s behaviour inside of the daycare, but it wasn’t a big deal.

"My Mom and aunt started the A & D Firm. You know, that accounting firm?" Zack’s face went white. He looked like he was going to faint, before he sighed heavily, covering his face with his hands. Maria, worried, placed a hand on his shoulder.

"I just...need a moment." Zack muttered, soothing his partner who quickly turned to making faces at Hewett to get him to laugh. Andrew held the giggling baby, watching as Maria played with him. Zack took a few minutes to gather himself, but when he did, his expression had been slightly more professional.

"Feeling better?" Andrew asked warmly and he nodded.

"You have to understand, Andy, I’ve known you for a long time. Not once did you ever mention this. I’m a little shocked, and kind of...hurt?" He suggested and Andrew winced.

"I didn’t even know that her company was that successful, Zack. I had no idea until recently. The Beckett’s had to tell me about it. I just thought it went under after she passed. How was I to know that it had become this huge business while I hadn’t been looking? I didn’t have contact with Kim until I reached out to let her know my Mom had passed, and that was when I was shown what she’d done." Andrew flushed. "She named the company after us. A stands for Andrew, and D stands for Dianna." Andrew glanced at Zack nervously, and found that Zack had a thoughtful look on his face.

"If you’re saying that this Kim is your aunt, are you referring to...Kim Proctor?" He asked and Andrew nodded.

"Yeah, and Jenny Proctor. Apparently my Mom was from a branch family, which is why we don’t have the same last name." Zack winced.

"Your Mom didn’t take on your father’s last name?" Andrew scoffed, offended.

"We would never take on that bastard’s last name, and I would have gone out of my way to change my last name as soon as I was able to if that was the case. I was going to either be Andrew Knox, or Andrew Proctor if the main family had adopted my Mom." Zack sighed.

"Alright. No need to get worked up, I’m just trying to figure out all the facts. As far as I know, branch families in true alpha families are such because they aren’t able to produce a true alpha. If that’s the case, where did your manifestation come from?" He asked and Andrew’s expression hardened.

"My father." Andrew said, "My Mom was one of many of the mates that he took. He glanced over me when I was tested as a kid and it was predicted that I was a beta, and I was always going to be a beta. My Mom anticipated that at some point I was going to manifest, I just didn’t know about it. Nor would anyone expect that I would manifest this late." Andrew shuddered, remembering the fear of that time. "I am glad that it didn’t happen when I was a kid. Who knows what that monster would have done to me?" Andrew shuddered again while Zack and Maria seemed to understand what was happening at the same time.

"Wait, Andy, is the reason you never watched entertainment news or read magazines because your family is uber rich?" Maria asked and Andrew frowned.

"They aren’t my family." Andrew declared. "We never needed his damn money, and Mom and I were of the same mind about it. Never touched a cent he sent us, even if it hurt us in the short term." Andrew wouldn’t lie and say that he didn’t wonder if he’d still have his Mom if they both hadn’t been so stubborn, but he wasn’t going to regret it too much.

He had seen the fire in her eyes whenever she looked at him. She hated him enough that she was willing to die before he touched her again.

Andrew would respect her wishes on this. Even if she tried to hide her hatred from him, not wanting to twist him with her own feelings, Andrew had never been an idiot. He knew that he was a bad guy as a child. There was a reason he felt uncomfortable in certain situations, and for over 20 years had avoided any form of media as much as possible.

"Well, that sounds rather final. Do you know his name or family name?" Maria asked carefully and Andrew shook his head.

"Doesn’t matter, and I don’t care. The man has continued, over and over, to trample over even the ounce of goodwill I had for him for helping my Mom create me. The final nail in the coffin was the flowers he sent the day my Mom passed." Maria’s expression softened, her eyes blue pools of sadness. Even Zack looked upset.

"I’m sorry for asking, Andy. I didn’t mean to upset you. I won’t prod about this anymore, but it’s just...to find out that you’re a child between two powerful true alpha houses and no one knows about you is rather shocking. Normally a kid like you would be touted as the next big thing. I’m just having a hard time wrapping my head around this." Zack told him and Andrew nodded. He completely understood.

Andrew had had a hard time coming to terms with it too.

"It’s okay Zack. I don’t really care about the title that everyone wants. I just like being known as Max’s partner, honestly. I like the Becketts, and they haven’t made me feel like a freak for everything that’s been going on either. Honestly, manifesting late is terrifying, and a very strange experience. There are so many things that can go wrong, and I’m lucky that things went as smoothly as they did. So, it’s okay. If I have to talk about my shitty father every once in a while, it’s a small problem compared to what I get in return." Andrew told them, smiling, and both of them relaxed. Maria smiled, taking Zack’s hand in her own.

"I’m glad to hear that they’ve been so welcoming, Andy. I mean it." She said, and Andrew grinned.

"I was worried though. They’re like Maxwell in some regard, so they took a bit to warm up to me." Maria laughed.

"What? A whole half an hour? Gosh, that must have been so painful for you." She teased and Andrew laughed.

"It was! It was so awkward for a while, but everything has worked out for the better. I even went to Max’s brother’s wedding." Andrew boasted, puffing up and the couple stared at him, their eyes warm. It was nice to see Andrew like this, so happy and bright.
