Chapter 129: He’s a big dog, he does big dog things
"Alright, it is clear that both boys seem to be a little uncomfortable with the topic, and we can always speculate later about Andrew’s pheromones. For now, it is a time of celebration, and it is a good thing that Andrew can comfort Amir in Ben’s place. Ben gets a lot of his traits from his Father." Amir’s grandfather said, a sparkle in his eye and Amir gasped.
"Grandpa!" He protested and the older man laughed, giving him a squeeze.
"What? Am I wrong? You cannot tell me your new husband does not have a temper? Do you remember how he behaved when we turned down his marriage proposal the first time?" He tsked. "Such anger, such rage. I was convinced I made the right choice until I heard you sobbing from your rooms." Amir made a face at his words, his ears turning pink as he flushed.
"That was-Ben does not have anger issues." Amir hissed quietly, and his grandfather laughed.
"Of course you are going to say that. I eventually said yes, and here we are. My sweet child of my own blood is married into the Becketts. Something I would have never considered in my lifetime would ever happen." His eyes held such love for Amir it almost felt uncomfortable to look at.
Andrew felt like he was witnessing something that he shouldn’t. Like an outsider looking into a family living room from the outside.
"Grandpa, the Becketts aren’t who you think they are." Amir grumbled, and his grandfather glanced at Andrew, giving him a wink.
"I know that now. It took several meetings to take their walls down. Had I known I just needed to be a tall blond man with glasses I would have done that from the start." Andrew’s face flushed as Amir’s grandfather threw his head back and let out a deep, belly laugh. Kim joined in.
"Grandpa!" Amir admonished, his lips twitching as Andrew felt heat coat his face. He hadn’t been this embarrassed in a long time.
"It wasn’t...that instant, was it?" Andrew asked shyly, and Amir broke. He burst into laughter, the sound similar, but not quite the same to Maxwell’s tinkling sound. It was beautiful, and Andrew could practically feel Ben perk up from the crowd.
Andrew looked around at the people who knew him, past and present, and found all of them with bright eyes, covering their mouths as it was revealed to him that the Becketts had folded rather quickly when it came to him.
"I mean, who could say no to that face?" Kim said, gesturing to Andrew and Michael nodded.
"And the way he’s so helpful and kind? There was no way they were going to be able to remain mean to him. It’d feel like kicking a dog." Amir snorted, and then covered his mouth as the undignified sound came out of him.
"Exactly." Amir’s grandfather agreed. "Look at him? A giant puppy. All big feet and hasn’t grown into his own body yet. Only the cruelest of people would ignore him." Andrew wasn’t used to being praised like this, and he wanted to just cover his face and hide.
"I-I’m nothing like a puppy." Andrew protested quietly and Jenny gave him a pitying look while still smiling.
"Andy, my sweet boy, you’ve always been a puppy. You just got...bigger. There is only one family who wasn’t able to see how special you were, but everyone else can clearly see what a good, kind, caring and considerate person you are." It was too much. Andrew didn’t think his heart was going to be able to handle all of this praise. He covered his face, crouching down until he was the shortest person around.
Several hands patted his shoulders as he tried to gather himself. His heart was racing, his chest felt full. He wasn’t sure if he was embarrassed, happy, or both. Probably both.
"Did you break him?" Maxwell’s accusatory voice speaking over him had him looking up at the other man with big, brown eyes.
"Max!" Andrew called. "They said I was like a puppy. I’m not like a puppy, am I?" Maxwell, who had come over to see why his Andrew had disappeared from sight, was faced with a dilemma.
Lie, or tell the truth?
Andrew watched as Maxwell bit his lip to stop himself from smiling. His hands were on his hips and he looked up at the sky before he looked back down at Andrew. His eyes were warm, soft, and held the truth.
"Andrew, my baby, you aren’t just a puppy, but you are my puppy, alright? Your Mom used to call you a dog, right? It’s an endearment." Andrew dropped his head, covering his face again.
"I don’t want to be a dog." He whined and Maxwell’s hand touched his shoulder while his scent wrapped around his neck.
"Even if I take you for walks?" Maxwell asked softly and Andrew swallowed.
"T-That’s not-"
"And give you plenty of pets?" Maxwell’s sultry voice brushed his ear. "What about belly rubs? Do you like those?" Andrew’s breath stuttered as Maxwell gently bit his ear.
"Y-You aren’t playing fair." Andrew’s protest was softer, more upset than anything else and Maxwell laughed.
"I don’t play fair. You know this." Maxwell told him and Andrew could hear the grin in his tone. "You also like it." Andrew did like it. He liked belonging to this pretty, pretty man who could run circles around the others in this room.
That didn’t mean he had to admit it around everyone. Andrew had some pride.
"Thank you everyone for coming to our second party. It is now time for us to move onto the dinner portion of the evening. If everyone would excuse the families of the two grooms, they are going to go and freshen up." The announcer called and Andrew felt relief fill him.
They could have the rest of this conversation in private. Thank god.
"Well, saved by the bell, weren’t you, Andy?" Kim teased as Andrew stood to his full height again, his face still red. She grinned, before leaning in and giving his cheek a kiss. "You’re doing great, kid. I mean it. I’ll see you after you’ve taken a break. We’re invited to the last party." Andrew nodded and Michael patted him on the shoulder.
"I’ll be around if you need me." Michael told him before following after the Proctors and Andrew and the rest of them headed towards where the rest of the Becketts, and Amir’s grandmother, waited.
"Are you two going to join us this time?" Andrew asked Amir’s grandfather and he shook his head. He gave a heavy sigh, but his eyes sparkled.
"My dear wife is quite shy, you see, and prefers to get changed while others are not watching. Who am I to deny his whims? It is better for me if I listen, you know?" Amir’s grandfather gave Maxwell’s a pointed look. "I feel you understand my words quite well. We marry very strong willed partners." Andrew, who still hadn’t recovered from the first round of teasing, felt his chest warm as his whole body flushed.
"Well, uh, yes." He mumbled at the mention of marriage. Amir’s grandfather smacked him on the back, laughing loudly.
"You will not propose at my child’s wedding, right?" Andrew shook his head.
"Of course not!" Andrew said, before his eyes widened and he prayed that Maxwell hadn’t heard that. Amir’s grandfather’s eyes were bright, happy as he looked over the flustered, taller man. They were almost at the rest of the family, Ben having moved forward to hug and whisper to Amir while Maxwell went to speak with his Father.
"I shall keep your secret safe. Have you picked out a ring? Asked for permission?" He tsked. "Who are we kidding? They would never turn you down." He dropped his voice down to a whisper, and Andrew cleared his throat, embarrassed.
"They...could say no, but I don’t think they will. They uh, already refer to me as their son-in-law." Andrew stared at Maxwell. "I haven’t even started looking yet. I was going to wait until I had another job again. Maxwell...he deserves the best." Andrew muttered quietly.
"A good man." Amir’s grandfather said quietly, smacking Andrew’s back again. "Come to us when it is time. We have plenty of pretty, shiny things that I think might fit your future husband." He sounded quite sincere, and Andrew felt his eyes widen.
"You own a jewelry store?" He asked and he gave a hearty belly laugh to Andrew’s innocent question.
"My dear boy, we not only own the shops, we own the mines, too." It was a surprise, but Andrew couldn’t ask any more questions as they reached the others at that moment. It wasn’t good to speak of things like this, especially since Maxwell was giving him a suspicious look.
It explained the jewels sewn into all of Amir’s clothes for the day, and Amir’s grandmother’s clothes as well. They would be expensive if you had to buy them, but if you mined them yourself? Well, that cut the cost significantly, didn’t it?
"Our new favourite boy didn’t know we owned several stores. Did you speak nothing of us, Thomas?" Amir’s grandfather accused as soon as they were within earshot and Mr. Beckett cleared his throat.
"It never came up in conversation organically, so I didn’t bring it up." Amir’s grandfather tsked again, and Andrew was beginning to think it was a normal thing for him to do. Amir’s grandmother came on Andrew’s other side and wrapped his arm around Andrew’s.
"You didn’t know? How could you not? Did you not see Amir’s outfit? Or mine?" Andrew groaned, closing his eyes.
"I just...thought that was normal?" Andrew suggested quietly and and he patted Andrew’s arm.
"Normal? Did you think all rich people behaved that way?" Andrew covered his face with his hands before he nodded.
Laughter washed over him and Andrew didn’t know if he was going to recover.
"Alright, alright. Stop teasing him. You’re going to make him never want to hang out around you ever again." Maxwell warned, unaware that he was the worst offender since Andrew still hadn’t recovered from his teasing.
Soft, gentle hands touched his face, his hands, and Andrew let Maxwell tug his hands down. His big, blue eyes were warm, full of affection as they stared up at him and Andrew gulped. Fuck. He just wanted to kiss him senseless.
"I’m fine." Andrew mumbled instead. Maxwell smirked.
"I don’t think you are. You clearly aren’t aware of your pheromones right now." Maxwell replied, before glancing behind him. "Andrew and I are going to change privately. He needs a moment away from others, and so do I." Maxwell told them, and Andrew’s face flushed at the knowing smirk on Mrs. Beckett’s lips.
"Right, of course. I think I should be glad I cannot smell him right now." She teased and Maxwell laughed.
"I warned you to stop. The poor guy is just trying his best right now." Maxwell told them, pulling Andrew away from everyone else. "Now, say goodbye to him for a little bit." Maxwell told them and Andrew waved at the group as Maxwell tugged him by his hand towards the doors held open for them.
What did he smell like? What was he doing? Why was Maxwell’s scent wrapping around him like a snake?
