Chapter 99: XCIX. Dragon Origin
Black Sail Inn offered three types of guest rooms.
Standard rooms, superior rooms, and the Emperor suites.
That said, the Emperor suites could hardly be called luxurious. If the standards of Dream Blue Hotel in London City were to be given an eight out of ten, these would score only a six.
But the environment was quite pleasant nonetheless, personally decorated under the guidance of Liszt himself, skillfully utilizing the avant-garde style of hidden lights behind plaster walls, emphasizing deconstructed post-modern minimalism. The viewing balcony offered a broad vista, overlooking the chaos of the outer city and the frenzy of the docks.
Under Boss’s governance, this Port of Sin also brimmed with life and vibrancy, a scene of flourishing competition right before one’s eyes.
Caroso had always tried to clarify the origins of Fafna.
He knew that this dragon had been rescued by anti-imperialists from the dungeon within Aran, but he was more curious about her true roots, whether the Dragon Clan’s habitat was in a forbidden area of the Western Continent or some alien celestial body.
Dragons were exceedingly rare, and over the last hundred years, fewer than ten had actually appeared before the eyes of humanity.
And of these, the most formidable—a mature Silver Dragon with wingspan stretching beyond ten miles—was slain by the Emperor.
As one of the oldest Churches on the Western Continent, the Holy Spirit Church’s library contained some books that had been in existence for more than two thousand years.
He once read in a book titled "Dragon Origin," whose compilation dated back to the Ancient Era. The original copy was protected by an Array Seal and had been transcribed countless times. Although some descriptions had been lost and the style and context of the writing had changed over time, most of the original content remained understandable.
Dragons could be generally categorized into three types.
One was the Ancient Dragon.
They existed in the world even before the first deaths occurred, perhaps even before life itself began, resembling less a form of life and more a half-mineral or some kind of transcendent force.
For them, form was merely a manifest image,
It would be more accurate to say they resembled gods rather than dragons.
The Eternal and Time Dragon was often regarded as the leader of all Ancient Dragons, also the most powerful among them. The Eternal Sect originated from this belief, subsequently developing doctrines and forming its lineage.
Another was the True Dragon.
Not just Ancient Dragons, but even the existence of True Dragons has become mythical to this day.
In "Dragon Origin," True Dragons were considered to have existed at the dawn of life, worshiped the Ancient Dragons, and emulated their immortal wills. These wills also took on draconic forms, each possessing distinct traits, divine power, and overwhelming strength that penetrated the heavens and earth.
The third type was the literal meaning of dragons on the present-day Western Continent.
These dragons were not of the true Dragon Clan lineage, but the creations of an incredibly terrifying Magician of the Ancient Era, who admired the strength of the Dragon Clan and studied it to create reproducible dragons. They were real living creatures in the true sense of the word and gradually began to form the concept of a clan. The first two types of dragons were each unique in their kind.
Although the Magician himself had long since passed away for reasons unknown—at least that’s what was written in the book—his masterpieces still roamed the world.
However, "Dragon Origin" did not specify how to differentiate them concretely.
All things had become legend.
Even Caroso couldn’t identify Fafna’s identity; even the name Fafna was given to her by Goria, and before that, she was always in a state of confusion.
"Think about it, try to remember."
Caroso needed to find out, as locating the Dragon Clan’s habitat before Fafna was transferred to Lostra could have a profound influence on the course of events.
The unbridled expansion of the Eternal Sect was nearly reaching a point of no return.
Those malevolent forces, though few in number, had an unbroken lineage stretching back to ancient times. The "Miracle of Suffering," the "Holy True God," and the demons from those religions, once pushed to desperation, would inevitably bring forth a great disaster.
The benevolent guidance of the thirteen Holy Spirits, which had led to the world now deemed civilized, would also be devastated and must not be defiled.
"I’ve forgotten... I’ve always been alone."
Images of that terrifying dark dungeon flashed through Fafna’s mind, and she had no desire to remember further.
"You must remember, you definitely know."
Caroso’s demeanor had become somewhat more pressing; transferring her to Lostra was a measure of last resort, as no other place could offer refuge.
Fafna crossed her arms, showing some resistance.
Goria furrowed her brows tightly.
Caroso let out a shaky breath, since he truly couldn’t remember, there was nothing he could do.
"You must remember, the Emperor is your enemy; he killed your kin, their bones still lie in Aran Royal City, built into Dragon Stone Square. About twenty years ago, he was beheaded, his blood spraying and staining the entire city red..."
Caroso wanted to continue.
"You’re insane."
Goria cut off Caroso, gripping Fafna’s hand tightly, as Caroso’s expression was extremely horrific, just like the madmen from each Sect.
"This is the truth. With your strength, no one can bind you. Sooner or later, you will run amok in the heavens and the earth, and all your enemies will be easily destroyed."
Caroso knew that this was not so easy for someone to accept, but once they went to Lostra, those people would certainly worship her, and she might lose her true self and forget her initial purpose, engaging in meaningless acts for the benefit of Lostra instead of crushing the Emperor.
Only by taking down the Emperor and crushing the Eternal Sect was of the utmost importance.
He had to implant this thought deep in Fafna’s mind before she left.
Goria’s expression was icy cold.
She had been contemplating whether to take Fafna away. The Emperor indeed was a man of deep sin, having personally started a chaotic world, where everything spiraled out of control, and endless killings and sins ensued.
Indeed, Goria started with the intent to take revenge on the Emperor, having been expelled from the adventurer’s guild, she joined this operation. But now her thoughts had somewhat changed.
Indeed, revenge should be taken on the Emperor, but that person should not be Fafna, who had absolutely nothing to do with all of this and was just a bystander.
The atmosphere in the room was extremely tense and oppressive.
Neither Caroso nor Goria spoke, and Fafna didn’t know what to do, not wanting to see them argue.
At that moment, the knocking on the door sounded like a heavenly gospel.
Fafna breathed a sigh of relief.
"Who is it?"
Caroso asked. Liszt had indeed kept his promise, and during that time, all the food was delivered to the door, without any disturbance or overstepping bounds, but one could not relax until the very last moment.
"I’m the First Officer from Black Sail, I’d like to invite Miss Goria down for a talk."
Fen was outwardly as undisturbed as an ancient well, but inwardly sneering, looking forward to Liszt’s expression later.
"What’s the matter?"
Goria, who appeared to have become familiar with Liszt, but it was just for show—such a cold-blooded bandit, even if a familiar face, warranted extra caution.
"It’s like this, Captain Liszt’s lawful wife would like to meet you, make a friend, how to say... truly sorry."
Fen spoke bluntly, recalling the time on the ship, when things were down to the wire, yet Liszt was still drinking and playing games with the adventurer.
Goria was greatly shocked.
Because Liszt had told her countless times before, he was a single male, had never even held a girl’s hand, didn’t know the taste, and was as innocent as they come, longing for a sincere relationship, for a female Holy Spirit to come rescue him, and so on.
What a storyteller he was, to have a wife after all this time. What’s the situation now? A nervously sensitive woman coming to see the other woman?
"Alright."
Goria figured it wasn’t anything serious, and rather let that sister see the true Liszt, so she wouldn’t continue to be troubled by this scumbag.
"Shall I take you down for some fresh air?"
Goria asked Fafna, her attitude having shifted.
"No."
Caroso objected.
"That’s not for you to decide, let’s go. Staying in a room all the time will make you sick."
