Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So! -
Chapter 76: Zayne…?
Chapter 76: Zayne...?
Breathing out, Evelyn shook her head.
"No. Don’t worry. I’m perfectly fine." She said, "Thank you, Amber."
Amber was very silent on the other side of the phone, but she did eventually agree. [Well, you’re welcome. Talk to me when you feel like it, alright?]
"Mhm."
The call ended.
Evelyn stared at the phone.
She stood to her feet, abandoning her coffee. She walked off to the room where she shut the door behind her, locking it.
Then she pressed her back against the door and slid to the floor, face buried in her knees that were pulled to her chest.
She felt...broken...and she couldn’t even explain how.
Why was she feeling this way about a man she didn’t even think she loved? Was it the kiss? Was it what started all this?
If they’d never kissed, could all this have been avoided? She wouldn’t be seated here moping as if she hadn’t been the cause of the entire thing.
Suppose she’d just spoken her mind to him. If she just hadn’t been so afraid of losing herself to a man she didn’t even understand herself around. Maybe...none of this would be happening.
But she could feel it now, the weird pain raining down on her.
How could everything just go so wrong?
The event went well, but why did all that have to happen by the end? Why did a man whom she’d only loved a year ago have to randomly come into her life, and at that moment as if the universe was somehow against her?
Why didn’t I just tell him how I really felt? What I really wanted?
She could’ve told him, she really didn’t love Valerio, and that she actually liked living with him.
She had always been alone for as long as she could remember. And she hated being alone.
Living with him felt nice. Waking up to someone and hearing a voice other than yours in the house?
But was that really it? Was the fear of being alone supposed to hurt this much? Enough that even as much as she’d hate to admit it, she couldn’t ignore the dull pain, aching in her chest.
Evelyn glanced around the room.
She couldn’t be here anymore. The papers would reach him tomorrow and it was best to leave as soon as possible.
The more she stayed, the more she would hurt herself.
Leaving tomorrow would be the best option to save herself the hurt. At least the next time she would see him would be at the company with many other people. As funny as it sounded, being alone with Zayne Mancini made her do stupid things.
Whatever they had was ending the day after tomorrow. There was no need to linger.
Getting up to her feet, she walked to the bed and crawled into it until she could lie, arms curled around the pillow.
It was the one he used and it smelled so much off him.
She could sleep early and wake up in the middle of the night to pack her stuff. Then when he leaves for work, she would move out. Seeing his face before leaving wouldn’t do her any good.
It’ll only worsen the hurt and the last thing Evelyn wanted was to cry.
...
She wasn’t sure how long she’d slept, but by the time she woke up, the sky was pitch black.
Evelyn pulled into a sitting position on the bed, fingers rubbing over her sleepy eyes.
What time was it?
She reached for her phone on the table near the bed and grabbed it. The screen came on.
Twelve thirty.
Six hours was a good enough sleep.
Settling her feet on the floor, she went over to the closet and dragged her suitcase out. Then one by one she began to pack her things.
She’d gone into the bathroom, stopping at the sink for a second.
She’d recalled the first time she moved in. They’d both had to brush their teeth at the sink. He was annoyed with her, complained of her using his brand-new brush without permission.
Or was it the closet? Where she’d stupidly challenged him for whatever reason and—
Evelyn chuckled a bit to herself, finding the memory funny.
Why was she even thinking of these things now? It’s not like she didn’t know these were eventually going to come to an end someday.
Dragging her hand through her hair, she let out puffs of deep breaths, sniffing hard to keep herself from even attempting to cry.
Jeez. What the heck?
It wasn’t like this man was her lover. He was like a roommate nothing more.
What was with all the melodrama and sentiments?
Clicking her tongue in irritation at herself, she proceeded to finish up with the rest packing.
By the time she was done, it was half past one. Still, she couldn’t seem to go back to sleep. There was only one thing she was thinking about, and she was tempted to do something.
Zayne...was he awake?
Well. She’d never know, not unless she checked.
Tiptoeing through the hallway, Evelyn approached the guest room. That scent of his, she could smell it, very sure that he was inside.
He’d eventually come home last night.
Grabbing the door handle, she swallowed thickly before turning the knob. The door opened without so much as a click and she poked her head inside, looking to find Zayne Mancini fast asleep on the bed.
She hesitated, pondering between the line of stepping in or turning around to go back to her room.
But this was the last time she was ever going to see him. Not until there was ever to be another meeting in her company. And even then, she couldn’t ever be this close to him.
Dragging a palm down her face, she forced herself into the room, leaving the door slightly open.
She approached the bed and stared down at him, finding him fast asleep with his loose hair tousled over the bed.
"Zayne...?"
