Chapter 75: Two Days Left

Chapter 75: Two Days Left

Evelyn could only glare at him as she gave in, taking a seat opposite him. Shortly after, the chocolate cake was delivered and he pushed it over to her. "Go ahead, dig in. I know how much you like chocolate cake."

"How would you even know that?" she muttered as she picked up the dessert spoon.

Brandon crossed his legs. "I may not say much, but I do pay attention, just like father did."

She paused slightly, but then scooped a spoonful into her mouth, pretending like she hadn’t heard a word he said.

"What did you want to talk to me about?"

Brandon stared at her.

He took a few moments before saying, "First of all, I’d like to know how you’ve been doing."

"It’s none of your business."

"It is my business, Evelyn. I’m your older brother, and it’s my job to look after you."

"Yeah, right." She scoffed out a laugh. "What kind of a big brother bullies his sister?"

"I never bullied you." Brandon furrowed his brows. "I don’t recall ever participating in such."

"Sure, you didn’t. But does that make you any different? I mean, you stood and watched every time without ever stepping in or even saving me. You watched and sometimes you pretended like you couldn’t see even if you could very well see what they were doing to me."

She shook her head, amused.

"I don’t know what you’re up to or why you’re behaving this way, but whatever you’re planning it’s not going to work. I’m unsure what gave you the impression I’d ever trust you when you very much assisted Preston in his plan to kill me—"

"I never did such a thing!" Brandon quickly defended. "I didn’t assist him. In fact, I had no idea he was planning such a thing and I only came to find out a bit too late. They kept it from me because they knew I wouldn’t support such a thing."

Evelyn didn’t make a response to his words.

He let out a defeated sigh. "Listen, Evelyn. I know that I’m not the best in any way. I know that I could have done better and I wish I had. And for that, I’m sorry. I sincerely apologize to you."

She shook her head. "I don’t need your apology. Just tell me what you want. I have to go home."

He stared at her, long and hard. But when he saw no change of expression, he sighed again.

"How are you?"

She looked at him. "Brandon—"

"That is the reason I brought you here. I want to know how you’re doing."

"Do I look like I’m not doing okay?" she asked.

Brandon shrugged. "I’d hate to pretend I don’t notice. You’re not okay these days. You seem different, Evelyn."

"Oh wow, I didn’t realize it was that noticeable."

"Evelyn—"

"I’m fine, Brandon. And even if something was wrong with me, it’s none of your business."

"It is my business because I care for you, Evelyn," Brandon said, hands balling against the armrest of the chair. "You’ve been out of it for the past few days. What’s going on with you?"

Evelyn stayed seated, not uttering a word for a few long seconds and counting. She abruptly stood up, abandoning the cake, and grabbed her bag.

"I’m leaving."

Brandon was quick to his feet, reaching for her hand. "Evelyn—"

"It’s none of your business." She spun around, glaring at him. "Seriously, what the hell is your problem? I don’t understand this sudden care and I don’t like it. You’re better off being the very same as Preston and Lyra, so leave me alone."

He gazed at her.

His eyes darted around and he let out a soft breath. "I hear you, Evelyn. But...if you ever need help, just let me know. I’ll always be here and always know that I’m on your side... Fully, this time around."

He let go of her.

Evelyn turned away immediately, leaving. She flagged down a taxi, not even bothering to call Enzo who could’ve picked her up.

———-

At the table in the kitchen, Evelyn sat.

It was six in the evening and Zaynew wasn’t back just yet. Her fingers tightened around the coffee cup she held, eyes falling shut for a few seconds. But that was until her phone suddenly rang.

She blinked her eyes open and picked up the phone, looking at the screen to find that it was Amber calling.

"Hello?"

[Evelyn?]

"Yeah?"

[Are you okay? You sound so down]

Evelyn sighed, laying her head on the table. "I’m fine, Amber. Really I am. I had too much work at the company today, that’s why I’m like this."

"What’s wrong? Did something happen?"

Amber chuckled softly on the other side of the phone. [No, not at all. I was calling to let you know that the papers have been completed. I have sent it out, so by tomorrow it should be delivered to Zayne Mancini."

"Oh..." Evelyn muttered. She’d forgotten for a second, but there were only two days left... Tomorrow and the next and everything between her and Zayne Mancini would be over.

A heavy feeling weighed down on her chest and she proceeded to drag a finger through her hair, swallowing.

Right, two days more.

And she would no longer have to live in this house.

She would no longer have to hear his voice.

She would no longer have to see his face every day or even sleep in the same bed as him.

She would no longer have to wake up and walk into the kitchen, just to find him seated at the dining table with his coffee and the one he’d made for her.

A suffocating lump built up in her throat and no matter how hard she tried to swallow it, it just wouldn’t go down.

[Evelyn...? You’ve been quiet. Are you okay? Are you not happy about this? If you’re not, I can cancel the transfer. It’s still too early, so that won’t be a problem]
