Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So!
Chapter 77: Do You Love Him?

Chapter 77: Do You Love Him?

Zayne didn’t wake up, nor made a sound.

She even touched him. Nothing.

Good, he was deep in his sleep and wouldn’t even know she’d been here.

Blowing out a deep puff of breath, she got into the bed beside him, shifting closer until she was as near to him as she could get.

She stared at his face, listened for every breath he took.

Her fingers itched. She wanted to touch him. And she did, lifting her hand till it could rest against his cheek.

She stroked under his eye, against his ear, and through his hair before letting out a soft breath.

"Sleep well...Mr. Mancini."

Her eyes closed shut eventually.

Zayne on the other hand blinked apart his lashes, gaze fixed on her face. He’d known from the moment she stood at that door.

He hadn’t said a word because he was curious. He wanted to know what she desired from him, or what she had to say.

It was all... Sleep well, Mr. Mancini.

And when was the last time she ever referred to him so formally?

————

By the time Zayne woke up early in the morning, Evely was already out of the bed like she’d never been there in the first place.

Her scent however was still lingering.

Letting out a deep breath, he left, getting ready for work. But by the time he was done, arriving in the kitchen with his briefcase in hand, he felt off.

The house felt strangely quiet.

Well, of course, it’d been quiet these days, but this was different. Even the coffee cup she uses, couldn’t be found anywhere. It was almost like the house was empty. But it wasn’t.

Her scent...was still all over the place.

And he was more than sure he hadn’t hallucinated her lying with him last night.

This game he was playing with her was stupid. Evelyn was his, Why did he need to give her up? Why does another man get to have her when she was made for him?

Whatever he said about him being mistaken was nonsense. She was the one he’d been looking for. From her looks to her scent, it was her. Those green eyes were something he would never forget even if he slept for a hundred years and counting.

Rubbing at his neck, he held tighter onto his briefcase and proceeded to leave the room, making his way over to the elevator.

When he came back from work, he would finally have a talk with her and figure out what the hell this was.

This silence of a thing wasn’t working.

It was clear she was affected by it as much as he was. And he hated seeing her the way she was. Fuck, he hadn’t even seen her smile these days, and when she looked at him last night, the way she smiled was the saddest he’d ever seen.

What kind of a man was he...breaking his own mate like this?

Brushing his fingers through his loose hair, he left the house for his car, but then he paused.

Enzo was nowhere to be seen, and so was the SUV.

Had Evelyn really left the house? And to her company? Probably. Where else could she have gone?

He would have a proper talk with no argument this time around once he returned from work.

The thing was.

Even at work, Zayne felt heavily restless, unable to figure out what the heck was going on with him.

His mind kept drifting back to Evelyn, wondering for no reason where she was. He was sure that if something was wrong, Evelyn would tell or at least call him. Yeet, why did he keep feeling like this? As if something had gone heavily wrong?

He was finding it hard to even concentrate at his board meeting, zoning out every now and then until one of his workers had to snap him out of it.

"Boss, are you alright? We can always reschedule this meeting if you’re not feeling well today?"

"No." Zayne shook his head. "It’s alright. Go ahead and repeat your presentation. I’m just a bit disoriented. I’m fine, nothing to worry about."

His grip around the fountain pen tightened.

Evelyn, he needed to call her. Otherwise, he was going to lose his mind.

——-

Evelyn stared at the door of an apartment.

She was hesitating, but eventually lifted her hand and knocked against the door.

A few seconds ticked by before whoever owned the apartment opened up. It was Amber. And upon seeing her, Amber’s eyes broadened to the size of saucers.

"Evelyn, what the hell? Why do you look like this? You’re drenched!" She rushed down to her. "My gosh! Come inside!"

She grabbed her, quickly making way as she walked her in and shut the door behind them.

Evelyn dragged herself over to the living room where she dropped onto the couch. She curled her legs to her chest, burying her face in her knees.

"Evelyn..."

Amber stood in front of her.

"What’s going on? Why are your eyes so puffy? Have you been crying? And why did you walk into the room? Didn’t come with a taxi? Did you ask them to drop you off? Gosh, I’m confused, please say something to me. What is going on with you?"

Evelyn couldn’t look her in the face.

"I don’t know what is wrong with me?" Her voice was trembling a little as if she was holding back a sob. "I don’t know what he’s done to me, but I don’t feel like myself anymore. I feel like a complete mess, Amber."

"That’s why I need you to explain to me, Evy."

She combed her fingers through her hair, sniffling. "I woke up this morning. I looked at myself, at my bags that I had packed. I thought it would be easy to leave, but I just broke down crying, Amber. My chest was hurting like it never has before. I didn’t want to leave. I just...I just wanted everything to go back to the way it was."

Amber stared at her. She asked, "What do you mean...? Do you love Zayne Mancini?"
