Chapter 74: I Want To Talk
Evelyn chuckled at the look on her face and wrapped her arms around her waist to hug her. Amber brushed her fingers through her hair, trying to soothe her.
She said, "If you want to be with him, there is no need to make this document. You can talk things out with him and—"
"It’s of no use." Evelyn shook her head.
"Why? You haven’t given it a try."
"It’s useless to try. He doesn’t want me anymore, and I can’t beg him to be with me, Amber. That’s beyond pathetic. I’ve dealt with enough humiliation from Valerio. I don’t want to have to stand and have a man tell me no to my face for one reason or the other, more so when I know they’re not interested. I’d rather not go through that."
Amber asked, "Are you sure about that? Is this really what you want?"
"Not what I want." Evelyn shrugged. "But there’s nothing I can do."
Amber caressed her hair, sighing softly under her breath.
....
A few long minutes had gone by, and Amber eventually left, assuring to send the document over in three days.
Evelyn glanced at her wristwatch. It was almost four p.m., and she would begin going home soon.
Home...
Was that place even home?
Now thinking of going back there, made her so nauseated, threatening to have her bent over. The thought made her sick.
He would be home and even if not when she arrived, he would eventually come back. Then the usual silence would continue even though it was clear that neither of them wanted to speak to the other.
Respecting my wishes...
This wasn’t what I wanted. Not at all.
Rising to her feet, Evelyn grabbed her bag and picked up her phone. She left the office, locking it and when she turned around, she was met by Lucia who bowed to her.
"Boss, are you leaving already?"
"Mhm, yes. Is there a problem?" she asked.
Lucia shook her head. "The project that you discussed with the board, should we begin funding it? I’ll transfer the transaction list to you tonight after I record it."
"Yes, that would be nice. But..." Evelyn half smiled. "Do you plan to pull an all-nighter?"
"Oh, that’s not a problem. My husband is around with my kid. So, I can spend a few hours at the company to finish the papers."
Evelyn let out a soft breath and abruptly pulled her into a hug, embracing her. "Thank you, Lucia. It really means a lot."
Lucia blinked rapidly, the last thing she expected being the boss yanking her into a hug. This was her job...after all?
The smile that pooled at her lips stretched from ear to ear. "My pleasure. Take care of yourself, boss."
Evelyn nodded.
She let go, walking off towards the elevator. She made her way down to the last floor, but the second the doors chimed open, she was met with none other than her brother...Brandon?
Wait, Brandon?
What the heck was he doing at her company? Well, yes, he was a shareholder, but no meeting was being held today. And it was already four p.m. Workers were starting to leave work.
She didn’t say a word to him, but walked past him to leave. Brandon, however, grasped her arm, stopping her.
They locked gazes.
"What are you—"
"What’s wrong with you?" Brandon questioned.
Evelyn glared at him. "What are you talking about?"
"You look a mess."
She frowned at him.
A mess?
That made no sense. She looked in the mirror before she left early this morning—
"You have bags under your eyes. Have you not been getting enough sleep? I’ve never seen you this...dishelved before. What’s going—"
"It’s none of your business, Brandon." Evelyn glared at him. She stormed off to leave, but stopped suddenly, spinning on her feet to narrow her eyes at him. "One more thing. Don’t you ever give my contact to anyone again without my permission. As a matter of fact, delete it from your phone. It’s not like we talk to each other."
She left.
Brandon watched as she went. He pinched between his brows and rapidly began to follow after her.
He snatched her wrist the second he got close to her and began to drag her off with him. "Come with me."
"Hey!" She bristled at him. "Let go of me! Brandon! Let go of me. What do you think you’re doing?"
Brandon pulled her out of the company, and even when they stood, waiting for the cars passing to give way, he didn’t let go of her.
"Brandon!" Evelyn gritted out. "Stop this nonsense and let me go."
"You are a very stubborn woman, you know that?" He looked down at her with amusement, shaking his head.
Before she could make a snarky remark to his words, he yanked her along with him as he crossed the street, heading to the bakery café opposite the building.
They stepped inside and he walked her over to the display counter where a lady stood, a bright smile on her face.
"Hello," Brandon said.
She offered him a polite smile. "How may I help you, sir? What would you like to buy?"
"Not me, but for my sister here. She likes chocolate cake. Could you sell me your best ones?" Brandon asked.
Evelyn shot him a glare. "What the heck are you doing?"
He didn’t answer her, but instead shook his head as he looked away to the seller. The woman pointed at some of the chocolate cakes on display. "I’ll recommend the one with a strawberry on top. It goes really well with it."
"Do you want it?" Brandon asked.
Evelyn frowned at him. "What do you mean?"
"I’m offering to buy you a chocolate cake."
The urge to roll her eyes. "Brandon," she emphasized his name. "I can buy myself a chocolate cake if I want one."
He shrugged. "True. But it won’t taste as good."
He ordered for it and while the woman proceeded to have it ready for them, he grabbed her, walking her over to one of the empty tables in the café.
"Have a seat," he said.
"I need to leave—"
"Just have a seat, Evelyn," he interrupted, dragging a breath. "I came to see you. I want to talk to you, so sit down and let’s talk. Don’t be so stubborn and standoffish for once."
