Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So! -
Chapter 70: She Hated It
Chapter 70: She Hated It
"Yes. He’s downstairs waiting." Lucia asked, "Are you unable to see him? I can ask him to—"
"No, no, it’s fine. I’ll see what he needs." Evelyn smiled at her and grabbed her bag from the counter. "Don’t worry."
She left the bathroom, making her way to the elevator.
What the heck was Valerio doing here? Setting aside her little argument with Zayne, she really wanted nothing to do with this man. But somehow, he just kept being so persistent.
First at the event, and now at her company too?
The doors of the elevator chimed open and she stepped out. Her eyes searched around, halting at the entrance of the company where he of course stood, one hand in his pocket and the other holding the phone he was browsing through.
As if noticing her, he lifted his head, taking off his sunglasses.
"Evelyn."
His lips stretched as he beamed.
Evelyn didn’t return the gesture, but instead approached with a frown on her face. "What are you doing here?" she questioned.
"Why? I can’t see you?" Valerio cocked an unserious brow, reaching to grab her hand for a polite kiss.
She, however, pulled away, glaring. "Don’t touch me, Valerio."
"Evelyn."
He blinked at her.
"What’s going on with you? Do you dislike me now or what?"
Evelyn shut her eyes for a second, breathing out the frustration she already felt. She looked at him. "What do you want from me, Valerio? Get to the point because I don’t have the time to waste on you."
"Are you angry with me?"
"Valerio—"
"I came to talk to you," he said, cutting her off. "My behaviour at the event was bad and I shouldn’t have been that way to you. And I want to apologize."
She stared at him.
"I’m sorry, Evy, that was immature of me—"
"Don’t call me that, Valerio."
"Evelyn."
"Listen, I get it," she said. "You’re sorry and I’m over it. There is no need for an apology. Now, if that is all, I’ll get going."
She stepped past him to leave. Valerio however grabbed her arm, pulling her to a stop.
"Evelyn." He spun her around to face him.
"Valerio, let—"
"How about dinner?"
That made her pause. "What?" She furrowed her brows.
"I want to take you out to dinner. It’s been a year and I’d like for us to have a proper talk. Nothing over the top, and absolutely nothing you don’t like. What do you say?"
Valerio stared at her with desperation, his gaze pressing and wanting.
"Valerio, this is..." Evelyn’s words had trailed off, feeling this familiar gaze stabbing into the back of her head.
Her heart skipped a beat and she slowly turned her head to find Zayne, who’d stepped out of the elevator, gazing at both of them.
Wait, no, this wasn’t what it looked like. She wanted to say, she wanted to tell him, but then Zayne looked away.
He simply pocketed his free hand, grabbing his suitcase tightly as he walked over, moving past her without so much as a word.
Evelyn stared until his silhouette was out of sight. She snatched her arm. "What is wrong with you?"
"What?"
Valerio questioned.
"What is he to you?"
"None of your business! Let me be!" She turned away and stormed off, her heels loud against the floor.
He watched her go, jaw clenching as he ground his teeth.
What sort of relationship was there between these two? He’d seen the rumours of them being betrothed on the net, but...it couldn’t be.
Evelyn loved him. She was completely head turned for him. No one could move on that easily in a single year, not someone like Evelyn.
He smirked to himself, fingers coming up to drag through the brown of his hair. Her number, he just had to get it from someone—anyone, maybe even Brandon. They could talk this out. Dinner would be nice and he would straighten the misunderstanding between them.
He was sure that if he apologized properly, she would come around.

Evelyn paced the length of the room.
Had Zayne completely abandoned this room for her? Yes, he was in his office, but she knew that he was never coming there.
Wasn’t he even the least bit affected by this? Was he enjoying this...?
Her phone pinged with a message and she hurried over, picking it up.
The message was from an unknown number, but whoever sent it seemed to know her, because... :Hello, Evelyn
She frowned, typing back. ’Whose’s this?’
:Valerio
Her face immediately fell. ’How did you get my number?’
:Your brother. And listen, I know how this looks, but I just want to talk to you. I’m sorry for pulling up at your company like that. However, I really want to talk to you. I need to.
’Don’t message me again’ Evelyn turned and stormed out of the room. She made her way over to Zayne’s office where she stopped in front of the door.
She wanted to step inside, to have a word with him.
Yeah, she didn’t think things were going to be like this, that he would completely shut her out like she didn’t exist at all. Of course, this had no reason to bother her, and to be honest, she didn’t even know why it unnerved her so much.
But she hated it.
His silence.
The way he walks past her without saying a word.
The way he never even looks at her anymore. Not even when they’re in the same room.
He really did let her... ’Suit herself’
Evelyn dropped her forehead against the door, tired, and left with no ounce of courage to even knock.
She desperately wanted to clear this misunderstanding. Yes, she may have lashed out because the fact that she was losing control frightened her. I mean, how easily he’d been able to get under her skin, to work his way into her life like this.
But the truth was...she didn’t love Valerio. Whatever she felt for him died that day after that humiliating rejection. There was no way she could ever feel a thing for a man like that.
She may be flawed in so many ways, but self-respect and dignity were something she had...
