Chapter 71: A Lover...?

Evelyn’s teeth dug into her bottom lip.

Why was Zayne bothered though? Who cared whether she loved or didn’t love another man? Yes, they were betrothed, but that was contractual, wasn’t it? It wasn’t as if they were in any form of relationship, so why was he being this way?

Was it because of the kiss? That couldn’t have been some boundaries crossed, right? It was just a kiss...

Evelyn scratched roughly at her head, grunting at the headache she was having. These thoughts felt painful.

She didn’t even have the courage to step in there—

The door pulled open too suddenly and she dropped face-first, almost hitting the ground.

Zayne caught her with an arm wrapped around her stomach. She stared at the floor that was barely a few inches away from her. Her chest was pounding, throat bouncing in thick swallows.

"I don’t really appreciate you loitering around my door," he said, lifting her back onto her feet.

Evelyn looked at him. "I wasn’t...doing any of that. I just arrived here because..."

He arched a brow.

"What do you want?"

She blinked at him.

"If there is nothing, leave. I have work to get back to," he said, turning to return to his office chair.

Evelyn snatched his wrist, pulling him to a stop. "Wait, I..."

He glanced at her. "What?"

She gulped, darting her eyes around the office. "I...um..."

Just get to the point! What are you waiting for, Evelyn?

But she found it hard to do.

Saying anything was equivalent to saying she liked his presence, that she liked hearing him talk to her, rather than his silence.

But this was her only chance to stop all this. It felt like hell, so frustrating, it was almost making her lose her mind.

"Listen, I—"

Her phone vibrated.

Both of them glanced at the device and she lifted it, taking a look at the number calling.

Valerio.

Before she could decide whether to answer or hang up, the phone was taken from her hand, causing her to lift her head. Zayne was now in her space, so fast, she hadn’t even noticed, nor felt him move.

He was staring down at her with that annoyed expression, as if she were getting on his nerves. His eyes shifted to the screen and he answered the call.

[Evelyn]

The frown on his face worsened, expression darkening.

"Uh...Valerio?"

[Listen, Evelyn, I know you’re pissed at me. I never should have done what I did. That’s why I’m asking you to go out to dinner with me. Just one night. I’d like us to talk. Is that...okay?]

Before she could respond, Zayne ended the call, never breaking eye contact with her even for a second.

She flickered her lashes and took the phone back, brushing her hair back tiredly.

"I’m going to go..." She turned around, proceeding to leave the office. His words, however, brought her to a stop.

"You can’t go."

Her grip on the phone tightened. "I never said I was—"

"I don’t want you to go. You can’t," he repeated.

Evelyn balled her fists, turning on her feet to stare up at him. "Why? I want to know why you care so much. Sure, we have this whole contractual thing going on, but...I’m not your wife. I’m not yours, and I don’t belong to you. So why?"

"You want me to keep repeating myself, don’t you?" Zayne stepped up to her until he could tower over her. Evelyn had a confused expression, her head craned back as she gazed into his eyes.

"Go ahead. Tell me," she demanded.

"You don’t need to be my wife to be mine. You were made for me. What is so hard to understand?" he asked.

"Made for you?" Evelyn dry-laughed. "I’m not made for you. In fact, there is nothing between us. And it’s just so strange you think I can choose you and only you. No... It doesn’t work that way."

Zayne tipped his head to the side. He blinked, asking, "Then how do I keep finding you?"

"What...?"

"Every time I wake up, I keep finding you, one way or the other. Somehow you keep being tangled with me, and you and I...we... You’re always a part of my..."

She stared intently at him, waiting, expecting the completion of his sentence. Zayne, however, shook his head and shrugged almost lazily.

"You want to go to that dinner with him?"

She swallowed, giving him no answer.

"Go ahead. I won’t force you. I don’t suppose a different turnout in this lifetime will hurt. You may not really be made for me, and it might all just be a miscalculation on my part."

He shut the door before she could even respond or process his words.

What the...

What the heck did he mean by that?

Miscalculation?

He says one thing and suddenly switches up.

Her face twisted into the biggest of frowns.

A different turnout? What turnout?

What did he mean by any of this? All these did nothing more than just worsen her frustration.

Zayne Mancini was driving her out of her mind.

One week has passed now. Nothing has changed, not with Zayne nor the strain that was obviously between them.

And it brought her to only one conclusion... Something was wrong.

Was he seeing someone else? Was that why he didn’t care anymore whether she chose someone else or not? And by the end of the two weeks left, was he going to let her go?

From the way he was acting, it was more than clear that he was no longer interested—he clearly didn’t want her anymore.

He was tired of her, and...he would let her go. Cancel the contract as well.

This was absolutely what she wanted, yet why did she feel this way? This annoyance, irritation, and frustration at the mere thought that he wouldn’t want her anymore.

What is wrong with me?

She had never been one to be this indecisive before, but here she was, unsure whether she wanted this man to want her or not.

Evelyn grunted, digging into the cup of coffee she held.

What am I even doing here?

Yes, yes, shameful as it may sound, she was...stalking him. Seated inside the cafe opposite his company and watching to see, to find out if he really had a lover.

I can’t help it!

She was losing her mind the more she was left unsure. It was better to know than be left guessing.

But what if he truly had a lover?
