Chapter 69: Valerio Bacini
Chapter 69: Valerio Bacini
It’s been two days in a row now and Evelyn has barely seen Zayne.
He would leave work very early in the morning before she could even catch up. Of course, there was Enzo to drive her, but she’d usually gone with Zayne and stepped down at her company.
Now...he didn’t even bother seeing her face before he left. And when he came back, he never held conversations like he always did with her. He was quiet, and even when they did end up bumping into each other, he wouldn’t even look at her twice before walking past her.
He’d made her feel like she didn’t exist these days, which of course wasn’t how it used to be. Heck, Zayne was always in her space. Everywhere you saw her, you saw him.
Now it felt like...she lived in this house alone.
Even now, it was still as early as nine a.m., but Zayne Mancini had already left for work without seeing her face or even saying a word to her.
Oh, oh, but that wasn’t even the worst part. Since the entire thing, he completely abandoned the bedroom for her. He never bothered coming and apparently now uses the guest room.
And of course, she could tell him to come right back, but wouldn’t that just be embarrassing herself? Getting too close to that man had somehow begun to make her lose control of herself.
Two months, she said. There were barely three weeks left. If she kept faltering, she’d end up becoming his wife.
But then again...what was even so bad about being his wife? She couldn’t find any. Was it just her pride? After all, she’d rubbed it so bad in his face how she was going to win this. And now it looked like he might actually win without even trying so hard.
Evelyn slurped her coffee roughly.
No, Evelyn, this is for the best. She said to herself.
Seeing as he didn’t like seeing her face or talking to her anymore, it could only mean one thing. Zayne Mancini was no longer interested in her. And that meant that after three weeks, she would be free of him... never having to see his face anymore or hear his voice. Of course, unless there was a meeting at her company.
Yet, why wasn’t she...happy?
Why did she feel anything besides happiness? Her throat felt so dry as if she had sawdust in them and not even the coffee she was consuming helped.
Her chest was racing, but rather in so much anxiety.
The thought of never having to be around this house with him anymore.
The thought of having to live alone again.
The thought of sleeping in a bed completely alone.
The thought of being the only voice in a house. Never perceiving that strangely nice scent of his, or hearing him talk. Even hearing him breathe, or seeing him look at her especially when she had her back turned to him, or early in the morning when she wakes up but pretends to keep sleeping, because she knew he takes a few minutes to stare and touch her face for whatever reason.
Was this just her fearing being alone or was it...something else?
She sprang to her feet immediately as if snapping herself out of the thought. What the heck was she just thinking?
Fear of being alone? How so? What was there to be afraid of?
Seriously, get it together, You’re losing it.
She snapped to herself, snatching her bag off the dining table to leave the kitchen. Who cared that Zayne was being this way with her?
Three weeks and all these would be over. Life was fine now. She didn’t have a hit on her anymore and Zayne Mancini was the least of her problems.
Storming over to the elevator, she left the building for work.

The fourth day moved by in the blink of an eye.
Maybe she’d spoken too soon.
Fifth and even the sixth. It was like a damn repeated cycle at this point. And it was borderline bothering her.
How could a whole week have gone by and this man hadn’t said a word to her? How could someone just shut out like this?
"Ms. Darkwood?"
She was too lost in her thoughts to even realize she was being called.
"Ms. Darkwood!"
She snapped out of it, lifting her gaze to Dante who was speaking. They were in a board meeting room, discussing TDG’s project which she’d of course gone over.
"Is everything okay with you?" Mr. Dante asked.
Evelyn blinked at him. "Uh...of course."
"Did you hear anything I said?"
"Yes of course. And you do have a plan. The project should go well with a few little changes."
"Okay, then it’s settled," Dante said.
Brandon tilted his head to the side, eyeing Evelyn. No one else might have noticed, but he could see the way she was obviously distracted and he felt like he knew why.
Zayne Mancini.
Since this meeting began, she’d been eyeing him every now and then. Mancini on the other hand hadn’t spared her a single glance.
He furrowed his brows.
The meeting had come to an end. And Evelyn was quick to get up from her seat. She left, beelining for the restroom.
She headed straight for the sink and exhaled a deep breath, hand running through her hair.
This felt so suffocating.
What is going on with me? What’s happening to me?
She felt like she was losing her mind the more this went on. And nothing helped that somehow she was the only one having a hard time. Zayne seemed completely unfazed.
"Boss...?"
Evelyn spun around immediately at the sound of her name.
It was Lucia.
"Yes?" she answered.
"Are you okay?" Lucia poked her head through the door. "You’ve seemed out of it today."
"Yeah, I’m fine. I just don’t feel so well. That’s all. There’s nothing to worry about."
Evelyn nodded.
"Is there a problem?"
"No." Lucia shook her head. "But there’s someone downstairs looking for you."
"Who?"
"Valerio Bacini."
Evelyn stiffened. "Wh...what?"
