Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So! -
Chapter 68: A Single Mistake
Chapter 68: A Single Mistake
Lyra and Preston didn’t even allow Bradon to settle down before hammering at him.
"What the hell was that?" Lyra questioned.
Preston glared at him. "What the fuck, Brandon? You’re investing back into TDG? Are you kidding me?"
Brandon shrugged.
"Why would I kid you, Preston? I don’t think I’ve ever given you the impression that I was a joker."
"Why did you do that?"
"Because I could."
"Brandon—"
Brandon spun on his heels to glare at him. "I told you I’m not your dog didn’t I, Preston?"
Lincoln was in the room as well and he was watching.
"You wanted to play around like a pet, telling me what to do, what not to do, and casting me out when I don’t dance to your tune." Brandon chuckled. "You’re very stupid if you ask me, because what exactly gave you that impression? Do I look like Lyra who licks your feet like a dog or is it uncle?"
Lyra glared at him.
"Keep my name out of your mo—"
"And you shut up." Brandon gave her a derisive look. "Aren’t you ashamed of yourself? How stupid can you be?"
"Brandon!" She leveled him with a stare.
He approached her until he could stand in her space, head tilted with that disdainful gaze in his eyes.
"You’re a disgrace, you know that?"
"Brandon!—"
"In this business field, every one of us knows that they look down on women. You saw what happened with Evelyn. Do you think they don’t do the same to you? Even Preston over here does! That is why you’re nothing but an obedient lackey to him. Yet somehow you think you’re better than Evelyn?"
He chuckled, shaking his head with absolute amusement. "You’re not, Lyra. You are a waste, you know. Maybe you should learn a thing or two from Evelyn. On how to handle people..." he shifted his gaze over. "...Like Preston."
The minute that word fell from him, Preston attacked his face, punching him hard enough that he staggered back.
Lincoln blinked, while Lyra gasped. "Preston!"
"Preston, stop it. This is merely a disagreement, there is no reason to get—"
Brandon punched Preston right back, so hard that Preston’s lips split instantly, bleeding.
"Don’t you ever... put your hands on me ever again," he warned. "I told you that just because I do what you want doesn’t mean I follow you like a dog or that I’m afraid of you. I’m not afraid of you, Preston. I’m not Lyra or Lincoln and I need you to fucking understand that. So the next time you lay a damn finger on me, I will beat you back, and I’ll make sure you bleed."
He snapped over to Lyra. "And you? If you know what’s best for you, get the hell out and save yourself, because he’ll keep using you until you’re worth nothing. And guess what he’ll do then? He’ll abandon you. I don’t get how stupid you can be. A man willing to kill his own sister because of a stupid coperation, you think he gives a fuck about you? You’ll dry up to nothing the more you stay around him. Preston will influence you until you turn into this monster he is."
He ran his fingers through his hair, smiling.
"It all makes sense now why Father never gave TDG to you. You are not worthy of it, you’ve never been. He knows you, he’d seen you, the sort of devil in human clothing you are. And while I’m not a great person, I will never sail downward with you. Go as far as you want, Preston, but I still have morals, and the last thing I want is to disappoint my father even in his death. I’m not like you. So yes, I invested back into TDG, and I will help her make sure father’s empire doesn’t fall to the ground."
He shoved his hand into the pocket of his pants and walked off, finger coming to wipe at the blood on his lips.
Lincoln rushed after him, stopping in front of him at the entrance of the house. "Brandon."
Brandon came to a stop, glancing at him. "What?"
"I know you don’t like me much, but I have a favor to ask of you. Please."
He stared at the man. "What do you want?"
"Since you’re no longer in Preston’s wagon, please...take care of Evelyn," Lincoln pleaded. "I can’t be there, so I’m begging you to please look after her, not even at my request, but as your sister. Preston is going to push her to her limit, so please, be there to keep her up..."
Brandon gazed at him and suddenly shook his head. "Aren’t you ashamed of yourself, uncle?"
"What...?" Lincoln blinked at him.
"You’re asking me to take care of YOUR daughter?" Brandon shook his head, beyond amused. "You’ve got to be kidding me, really."
"She’s your daughter, you’re her father, why can’t you do that, huh?" he questioned. "Why do I need to be the one to look after her while you’re alive and well?"
Lincoln lowered his head, completely enveloped by shame. "Brandon... It isn’t that I don’t want to. You know that I’m not in the position to do so."
"And that’s your excuse?" Brandon scoffed with that disdain he couldn’t hide, burning in his eyes. "You sound more pathetic than I’ve ever heard you sound before. You’re my father’s brother and you’re going to let his son control you like a puppet?"
"Brandon—"
"No, listen, I don’t even think that’s the problem. The thing is, you can break away from Preston if you really wish to. The problem here isn’t Preston but you. I know why you haven’t escaped him. It’s because he’ll expose you. People will know you for what you are, a man who indulged the wife of his brother. A man who coldheartedly fathered the child that should’ve been his brother’s daughter. That’s what you’re afraid of. People will judge you, and you don’t want to be judged. But you know what uncle, maybe you should’ve been responsible and thought about all this."
"And just so you’re aware, I do not feel a tad bit sorry for you. And you know why?" he cackled. "Had the roles been reversed, you would’ve never pardoned my father. Do you see the difference between you two? My father is just that nice that even when he found out his own brother slept with his wife to spite him, he didn’t push you away nor ostracize you. He kept you close, gave you everything still. You’re selfish, and you always will be."
"Brandon stop," Lincoln pleaded, balling his hands by his sides.
"You act as if you love Evelyn, but you can’t even break away for her. Here you are joining Preston to oppress her. What kind of a father are you? You choose your reputation over your own daughter? I hate that you’re her father. The only person who deserved her as a daughter was my father and no one else."
"You don’t deserve Evelyn and you never will. I mean, so what if everyone finds out what you did? That you’re her biological father? Is it the end of the world? NO! And maybe you should go sit down and think like an adult you are instead of trying to push your responsibilities onto others. Fuck, you piss me off."
Brandon stormed off, leaving the man where he stood.
Lincoln stared into nothing. He lowered his gaze to the floor, and unable to take it anymore, the wetness that had clouded his eyes broke.
His sob was as silent as it could be, but his chest felt like it was exploding into smithereens.
This was worse than living. What sort of miserable life was this? Because of one single mistake he made...?
