Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So!
Chapter 31: Who Is She To You?

Chapter 31: Who Is She To You?

Lincoln was quick to answer the call that had blared into his phone.

"Hello, Sylus?"

[Sir, you can meet him. He’s outside your building and has agreed to talk]

"Oh, that’s good. Thank you."

He hung up on his right-hand man, quickly slipping his feet into his shoes. He hurried downstairs with the use of the elevator and made his way out to his gate where he found the man he was looking for.

Ezekial.

"Hello."

"Mr. Darkwood. Why do you want to see me," Ezekial asked.

"Please come inside first." Lincoln offered. "Anyone could see. I wouldn’t like any misunderstanding."

Ezekial nodded, stepping inside. Lincoln offered to enter the manor, but he declined. "Mr. Darkwood, I’m only here to know what it could be you want from me. I’d like to take my leave if—"

"Evelyn Darkwood, please withdraw the hit on her," Lincoln interrupted, saying.

Ezekial paused, freezing. He seemed shocked, more than taken aback.

"How do you know that—"

"That doesn’t matter," Lincoln said, shaking his head. "I don’t...mean any harm. I’m only asking you to withdraw the hit."

Ezekial frowned. "I can’t do that."

"Please—"

"Mr. Darkwood, you didn’t give this job to me and therefore you can’t ask me to do this. I work for someone else and I always see to it that I complete the job."

"You have to withdraw it. Please."

Linconlin pleaded.

"I’m begging you."

"Mr. Darkwood, please stop. I can’t do that."

"But you have to." Lincoln stepped into his space. "How much money did they pay you? I’ll give it to you."

"I don’t need your money, Darkwoo—"

"I’ll double it, Ezekial. Any amount you want, I’ll give it. Just please...withdraw that hit. You can’t kill her. That girl, she’s...she’s..."

His shoulders dropped, and he lowered his gaze to the floor.

Ezekial was frowning, confused as to why he was even going this far. Wasn’t the girl his niece? No one in that family cared about her, so what was this all of a sudden?

"Listen, Mr. Darkwood, your family issues really have nothing to do with me. I am just doing my—"

Lincoln abruptly fell on his knees right in front of him, head lowered as he begged, "Please..."

"Mr. Darkwood!"

"Ezekial. The girl you are trying to kill, she... You can’t hurt her. That poor girl," he pleaded. "You don’t understand the people you’re getting involved with. Preston is a man you need to stay away from. He’s a devil in human form and you can’t just do whatever he tells you to."

Ezekial took a step back. "Preston didn’t—"

"That girl is just an innocent naive girl who doesn’t understand what she’s getting into, who she’s playing with. I’ve watched her grow before my eyes and not once, not once has she... Ezekial, she has suffered, and if you could...even if this once, find it somewhere in your heart, just this once, to let it go. I beg you."

Lincoln pleaded desperately, cupping his hands together. "I understand that you have no reason to do this for me, after all, you don’t know me like that. However, I’ll never forget this favor and if money is what you need, I’ll double the amount. I’ll pay however much you request, just please...let her live."

Ezekial gazed down at him, confused and conflicted at this point. "Who even is she to you?"

Lincoln’s hands dropped to his side, balling into tight fists. He swallowed thickly and breathed out, "She’s important to me. Very important to me."

"That’s it?"

"Yes...that’s it. She’s someone very important to me. Someone I have to protect even if it costs me my own life."

He rose to his feet and bowed as deeply as he could, imploring, "Please."

Ezekial stood still silently for a few instants before dragging a palm down his face. "Why are you putting me in this position?"

"Please!"

"This is my work, Mr. Darkwood, I just can’t..."

"Please, just this once, Ezekial. When the time comes, I’ll take the fall for it."

Ezekial paced back and forth, furiously dragging his fingers through his hair. "I-I don’t know yet. You need to let me think about this."

Lincoln met his eyes. "Ezekial—"

"I’ve got to go." The man pushed the gate open, stepping out before Lincoln could stop him. He boarded his car and drove off, leaving Lincoln where he stood.

Lincoln threw his head back to stare at the dark sky, a deep breath fleeing his nose. The sky had darkened more than it normally would, small drops of rain falling.

He took his phone out of his pocket and turned it on. On his screen was the picture of a little girl, eyes just as green. She held a full smile, standing next to the woman who she looked everything like her.

His thumb trembled slightly, but he swiped into the phone regardless. He went into his contacts and scrolled, stopping at the number that had the name ’Evelyn’

He’d always had her contact, but had never actually called her. Not even once. It wasn’t like he had anything to say anyway. Besides, the girl held some sort of dislike for him, a grudge. He knew, but none of it mattered.

He was going to keep her safe, whether she knew it or not.

Closing the gate, he snuck the phone back into his pocket and began proceeding into his manor.

However, just as he’d stepped into the foyer, he paused, frowning at the vibration in his pocket. He was quick to pick out the phone, almost stumbling back at the name on the screen.

He’d dialed Evelyn without knowing, and surprisingly she’d answered.

[Hello?]

Lincoln couldn’t speak.

[Um...who’s this?]

His breath was caught in his throat. He couldn’t form a single word.

[Hello?]

"Hel..." He couldn’t complete the rest of his words. His voice was quivering. This was actual fright. From what? That if she knew it was him calling, she’ll hang up?

She didn’t even like seeing his face. He never missed the scowl she held whenever she saw him. But could he blame her? After all, in her eyes, he was on Preston’s side...

Having no other choice, Lincoln proceeded to hang up.

[Who is this? I can’t—]

The line went dead.
