Chapter 32: Shall We Begin?
Evelyn blinked at the screen of her phone.
What in the world...?
She left the balcony into the room, meeting Zayne who was drying his hair with a towel. They made eye contact.
"Someone just called me."
"And?" Zayne asked, curious.
She shrugged. "I don’t know. They didn’t say a word and hung up."
"Let me see."
He extended a hand out for the phone. She gave it to him and he browsed through, furrowing his brows when he saw that the number had no ID.
"Do you know or recognize the number from anywhere?" He looked at her.
Evelyn shook her head. "No. I’ve never seen the number before. This is the first."
"I’ll have it tracked."
"By whom?" she tilted her head at him.
"My brother. He’s good with computers. He should be able to track the number and find out who’d contacted you. If it’s one of them, then..."
"Then what?"
Zayne handed the phone back to her. "I’ll have them eliminated."
—————
His tie felt tighter than usual. They were heading to Evelyn’s company today, and the shareholders were going to make their decision. To leave or stay with TDG. He hated to admit it, but he was worried for her.
Would she be okay?
She acted tough a lot of the time, but deep down, she wasn’t that strong-willed of a human. Everyone had their limit and at some point, she would...
His hands balled into his fists, and he adjusted his tie. Well, he wouldn’t let that happen. He had no intention to do so, because he was always going to be behind her whether she wanted it or not. And when she couldn’t take it anymore? He’d be there to clean this mess for her in a more straightforward way, even if it meant sending some people to see the devil themselves.
Zayne looked around.
Where even was Evelyn?
He hadn’t seen her since he woke up this morning and when he’d called her name, she never answered. But she was in the house, he could smell her scent all over the place.
Grabbing his briefcase, he proceeded to the door, pulling it open to lea—
"HA!" Someone jumped in front of him, hands lifted with a big smile, a few of her teeth exposed.
Zayne was as still as a statue, unmoving with a blank expression on his face.
He took a deep breath and then slowly lowered his head to meet Evelyn’s gaze. "What are you doing?" he asked.
Evelyn rolled her eyes, grousing, "You could’ve at least pretended to be scared." She pushed past him into the room to grab her bag.
Zayne turned around to stare at her. "Oh. I get it now. You were trying to frighten me."
"I think that’s pretty obvious," she muttered as she searched through her bag.
"Better luck next time."
She paused, twisted her gaze toward him, and eyed him up and down before scoffing. "Better luck next time," she mimicked, stomping towards him.
Zayne furrowed his brows at her. He followed next to her as they headed to the elevator, making their way down to the last floor.
This time, he was going to drive, which made Evelyn curious. "What about your wound?" she asked as she buckled her seatbelt.
Zayne glanced at her. He didn’t respond, but instead took a reverse. The engine sputtered as they drove out of the compound.
She had her focus on him. His wound couldn’t have healed completely, could it? And was that the reason he wasn’t answering her? It’d been barely two weeks...
Well, she was going to make sure to check.
A few more minutes on the road and Zayne pulled over, parking in front of the company.
Evelyn stepped out, lifting her gaze to stare at the building. She swallowed back the bile that rose in her throat.
"Are you okay?" Zayne inquired as she turned to look at him. She looked green. "You don’t look so good."
"I’m fine," she hissed as she adjusted her suit jacket. "I’m just a bit...nervous. Nothing more."
He watched as she chewed on her bottom lip. Seriously? This nervous? How would she even handle these people?
"Evelyn, is this too difficult for you?"
Her eyes snapped to his. "I told you I’m fine! Stop asking me that. If I couldn’t handle it, I wouldn’t be here."
"What is your problem?"
"Nothing is my problem. Just quit talking to me. You’re making me more nervous than I already am."
"Silly girl." He snatched her hand, slightly miffed.
"Hey, what are you doing?" She glared at him, antsy.
Zayne pulled her after him, interlocking his fingers with hers. "There is nothing to be so nervous about. You said it yourself, you are not a pushover. And I know damn well, you meant every word."
"Zayne!—"
He stopped for a second, spinning on his feet to step into her space. His fingers weaved to the back of her head, holding and keeping her still. "You told me you knew what to do. What is the problem now?"
She couldn’t answer him, swallowing.
"Do you know one thing that just makes you so attractive, Evelyn?"
"What...?" she puffed out.
"It’s your confidence." He tapped his finger against her forehead. "You see the way you handled them the last time, you are going to do the very same thing. Never let people walk over you. Never show them even an ounce of your nervousness or they will snatch that opportunity and crush you. Do you understand me?"
Evelyn rapidly blinked.
"Answer me," he demanded.
She nodded. "Yes. Yes."
Her lips stretched into a smile. "I don’t know what happened to me. I just got so cold and a bit afraid."
"Don’t forget that I’m here. And I’d never let anyone hurt you." Zayne held tighter on her hand as he pulled her after him towards the elevator that took them to the next floor.
The doors chimed open and they made their way to the conference room. Evelyn stopped at the door.
He looked at her. "Still nervous?"
"A little bit."
"Breathe," he said. "Breathe for me."
Evelyn inhaled and exhaled, nodding her head. "I’m okay."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
Zayne spared her one last glance before pushing the door open. He stepped inside and Evelyn followed suit.
Just as expected, everyone was already settled at the glass table. Preston, Brandon, and Lyra were of course seated next to each other, their eyes rising to meet her. She averted her gaze, making absolutely sure that no expression on her features hinted at the slight anxiety festering inside of her.
Everyone stood to their feet and all bowed to each other in greeting. Lincoln stared at her, but she never crossed gazes with him even once.
"Shall we begin?" Evelyn asked with a smile.
