Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So!
Chapter 30: A Bodyguard?

Chapter 30: A Bodyguard?

"Tell me, what is it like living with your wife?" Alessio asked cheerfully, while he arranged the fountain pens on Zayne’s desk.

"Stop touching my things, Alessio," Zayne ground out. "And she’s not my wife. Not yet."

"Okay, but tell me. What’s it like living with her? She’s a human too."

"A nightmare," he responded.

Alessio furrowed his brows. "You’re saying one thing, and your face is expressing another."

"What do you mean?"

"You’re smiling." He frowned. "I think you enjoy your time with her more than see it as a nightmare. Are you maybe lying to yourself, brother?"

Zayne kept aside the seal he held, lifting his gaze to glare at him. "Okay. It’s enjoyable sometimes, but also sort of a nightmare. She’s so...energetic."

"How come?"

"She makes me miserable in order to win. And she’s never tired."

"Wait, win what?"

"We made a deal and it’s none of your concern, Alessio. Mind your business." Zayne went back to typing on his computer.

Alessio turned into melted against the table. "It must be nice."

"Get out of my office."

"Having a mate to wake up to every day. You don’t know the taste of loneliness anymore."

"Go and get a wife," Zayne suggested.

Alessio shook his head. "Not happening. I’m not interested in humans. I like omegas and will marry one soon if I don’t find my mate."

"Get out of my office—"

"Did you think about what I said last time?"

Now, Zayne paused all he was doing completely, shifting his attention to him. "About what?"

"The bodyguards. For the safety of your wife."

"Alessio, I can’t have our kind guarding her," Zayne refused.

"But you can’t have humans either," Alessio rolled his eyes. "Zayne, while I understand your concern, our kind wouldn’t betray you. They’d know you’d kill them. But humans. They’re easily moved by money. What if someone pays them off to hurt her? The thing is, at least with our kind, you’d be sure no one can hurt her. I mean, an omega wouldn’t bow to a human, and most certainly not betas or alphas. There are more advantages here than disadvantages."

"So...?"

"So, get the human a bodyguard," he said. "You left her at home today, she could be in danger for all you know—-"

"Agatha is keeping her safe." Zayne glared.

"And for how long?" Alessio asked. "She’s a good witch, but for how long can she keep up a barrier? Zayne, it’s a bit unfair to her that you know a way to keep her absolutely safe, yet you say no. Is she even really your mate at this point? Almost sounds like you don’t care—"

"HEY!" Zayne slammed his hands on the desk, the sound rattling.

The room temperature completely went cold, heavily chilling, Alessio swallowed, slowly getting up from the chair to take a step back.

"Zayne."

His eyes fluttered rapidly, and his lips slightly parted as he looked up at him. His chest had gone tight. He felt like he had no room to breathe, suffocating even.

This was actual fear. He’d never heard his wolf whimper like this before.

"Zayne, calm down. I was only trying to get you to be rational. I didn’t say she wasn’t your mate, nor am I interested in her. And as for whether you cared or not, I was only trying to bait you into agreeing."

The golden that had pooled over the blue of Zayne’s eyes vanished and he sat back down on his office chair. "You better mind the things you say around me. Just don’t open your mouth like a fish."

"Ouch." Alessio touched his chest. It was pounding crazily.

Goosebumps had broken out on his skin and for a moment, he’d forgotten how to breathe. "I think I should go back to my office now. But...I still think you’re making a mistake though saying no to bodyguards."

He shrugged and turned, leaving the office as he adjusted his glasses.

Zayne ran his fingers through the strands of his hair, hand balled against the desk.

"Alexa, call Evelyn," he ordered, leaning back against his chair.

[Calling Evelyn now]

[Hi, peacock!]

"Evelyn—"

[Wait a second, let me call you back. I’ve got something to show you]

A few seconds in, and her call popped right through. It was a video call and he answered.

"Zayne, you’ve got to see this," Evelyn said to him as she walked out of the frame and came right back in with a bowl of something.

He asked, "What is that?"

Her lips cracked into a smile. "An egg. Boiled egg."

He blinked, confused.

"That’s...what you wanted to show me?"

"No, look." She took the egg out of the bowl. "It’s perfect. I peeled off the shells and there is not a single crack. It looks as smooth as a baby’s palm."

"Oh," he muttered as he pinched his brows.

Evelyn’s smile widened, exposing her jade-white teeth. "It’s cool, isn’t it? I just had to show you."

Zayhe’s brow arched at her words—at the massive smile on her face and he turned the phone upside down.

"Eh, Zayne? Why is everywhere dark?" Her voice cut through the phone.

The man threw his head back and stared at the ceiling for a few moments. Then all of a sudden, a smile tugged at his lips, stretching wider the more he tried to restrain it.

He chuckled as quietly as he could, took a few deep breaths, and went back to holding the unbothered expression he had held earlier.

Zayne picked up the phone again, turning it over.

Evelyn’s face was in the camera. "Why was everywhere dark?"

"Nothing."

She rolled her eyes. "You can be very boring sometimes, you know that?" She seemed a bit offended.

Why?

"Evelyn—"

"I’m hanging up."

"Not yet. I have something to tell you."

"That you miss me?" she asked. "Of course you do. Your life would be so gloomy without me."

"Yes, it would be. Very gloomy. Now, listen to me," he said. "What do you think of a bodyguard?"

Evelyn furrowed her brows, curiously.

"A bodyguard?"

"Yes." Zayne nodded. "I won’t always be around you, or ready to go everywhere with you. I think a bodyguard will be good for you. What do you think? Would you like one? It would be a safe measure."

She was silent for a few instants. Then she slowly shook her head.

"No."

"Evelyn—"

"No, Zayne, listen, I can’t trust anyone, not with my life. Except you. A bodyguard is the last thing I need right now."

Zayne disagreed, "It is the only plausible solution for now."

"It is not," Evelyn refused. "You don’t get it. Throw money at their faces and they will betray you in a heartbeat. I’ve seen it happen right before my eyes and you want to know how?"

"Evelyn—"

"Zayne, my mother was shot right in front of me, by her very own bodyguard. I was fifteen. I watched her die. And why do you think she was killed? My father had a problem with another businessman and they somehow paid off her bodyguard to have her killed. Why? Because my father loved my mother, she was his only weakness and they used it against him. He also developed his heart issues after her death. She meant everything to him, and now he’s also gone. So no, I am not trusting anyone!"

Zayne stared at her. "I’m...sorry about that. I had no idea."

"Forget about it. I already told you I know how to get the hits off my back. I’ll handle this myself."

She hung up before he could say another word.
