Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So! -
Chapter 27: You Don’t Trust Him?
Chapter 27: You Don’t Trust Him?
"Isn’t this house a bit too expensive?" Amber asked, glancing around.
"Is it?" Evelyn blinked at her. "I thought you would like it."
Amber smiled softly. "I do like it. I’m just worried about the huge amount of money you spent on it."
"Oh, that’s not a problem. You’ll be staying here for a long while. I just want you to be comfortable."
Her smile stretched wider and she leaned in asking, "Have you gone to TDG company?"
"Yes." Evelyn nodded, crossing her legs. "Preston pitched his idea to all the shareholders, well, except Zayne. They were all against me, cornering me to give the corporation to him."
"And you didn’t?"
"Why would I?" she scoffed. "Amber, you’ve known the relationship between my father and me. He’s always been the hardest on me for no reason. Poured his anger on me, blamed me for everything, and punished me for the wrongdoings of my siblings. Isn’t it weird that he gave the corporation to me? Do you really think that he gave it to me because he thought I was more capable?"
Amber narrowed her eyes, forehead wrinkling in thought. "It seems like it."
"What?"
"Look at it from this angle. Your father has been known not to play about TDG or his work. He doesn’t mix personal feelings with work. Do you really think he would give TDG to you just to spite you? Be honest with yourself."
Evelyn shook her head. "He wouldn’t stoop that low."
"Exactly. What if regardless of how he felt about you, in his eyes, you were the most qualified to succeed him?"
She furrowed her brows. "That’s..."
"Look at you, Evy, you work so well under pressure. Had it been me whose life was threatened like this, I would’ve given up TDG without a second thought. But here you are, still thinking rationally. As careless as it may seem, I don’t know, that sounds pretty qualified to me."
"I’m not doing this for my father though." Evelyn smiled, flatly saying, "I’m doing this for me, to prove to Preston I’m not the same Evelyn they used to bully and walk all over. I’m not like that anymore and not even his underhanded means of pressuring me will work. I’m never giving TDG to him."
"FIGHTING!" Amber fist-bumped her.
Evelyn returned the gesture. "FIGHTING!"
"But...what do you want stated down in the will?" Amber asked.
Evelyn moved her chair over until she could whisper some things into her ears. The more she did, the more Amber’s eyes grew.
She gasped, clutching her shirt. "Are you serious?"
"Shh." Evelyn glared.
Amber blinked frantically. "Evy, are you sure about this? This might just worsen things!"
"I know," Evelyn sighed heavily, responding, "But this is the only way for me to get what I want. It’s not a perfect plan, but it’s the only way."
Amber tilted her head, asking, "Does your fiancé know of this?"
"No."
"Why not?" she snapped at her. "He should be aware of this. You can’t just—"
"He’ll eventually find out. I’m just being extra cautious to make sure nothing goes wrong."
Amber furrowed her brows. "Are you saying you don’t trust him?"
"What?" Evelyn frowned. "No! That’s not what I’m saying."
"Then what?"
"Amber, I live with Zayne. Do you think I’d live with someone I don’t trust? Besides, he took a bullet for me. Not even my father will do that for me. What’s there not to trust?"
"Then why aren’t you telling him?"
Evelyn shrugged. "A little bit of a surprise." She shifted closer. "Tell me though, will it really be processed fully in three days’ time?"
"I can’t guarantee you that... I mean, the court’s approval, it’s not..." Amber tried to explain.
Evelyn felt dejected. "I’d expected that much I suppose—"
"No, no! Actually, I think I can get it done for you. Pretty quickly to be honest. J-Just leave it to me."
"How would you do it though?"
Amber smiled at her. "Just leave it to me. Let’s write the will instead."

By the time Evelyn arrived back, it was already late in the evening.
She was sure Zayne would be asleep by now. The man didn’t lie at all. He loved his sleep like his life depended on it.
She stepped into the elevator and got out on the second floor. As she proceeded through the hallway, she paused a bit, furrowing her brows at someone’s silhouette outside in the backyard garden that even had an oak tree.
This hallway, unlike the other one, was facing the back of the manor.
Evelyn stepped closer to the glass window, grip on her bag tightening. Under the oak tree, someone sat. She couldn’t make out her features properly, but it was definitely a woman.
There was no one else in this house, except her, Zayne, Enzo, and the maid...Agatha.
Oh, wait, that was Agatha.
But, what was she doing out this late? It was almost... She glanced at her wristwatch...Twelve P.m. Yes, she’d been with Amber for the past few hours.
Agatha though. What was she doin—
She went absolutely still.
Agatha was knelt on the carpet grass. She couldn’t hear what she was saying, but her mouth, however, was moving as she muttered something. Then all of a sudden, she opened her palms, and out flew, more than a hundred bright butterflies. So pretty, and of vast colours.
Evelyn’s breath caught in her throat.
It was illuminating in the darkness, Agatha rising to her feet and enjoying what she’d done.
Evelyn found herself mesmerized, but terrified at the same time. Her brain couldn’t conjure how this could’ve been possible. There was no way she was—
A gasp tore suddenly from Agatha at the notice of her, all the way at the hallway window.
The butterflies were gone in the blink of an eye.
Evelyn jolted back, rapidly blinking and breathing.
What was that? They were gone like poof. She couldn’t see even a single one anymore like it hadn’t been there in the first place.
Had she...hallucinated everything...?
