Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So! -
Chapter 26: I Quit
Chapter 26: I Quit
Ezekial called over and over again, but Marcus wasn’t answering. His phone had been switched off for days now.
Frowning, he looked up at the small house in front of him. He’d had no choice but to come directly to his home and find out what had happened.
Didn’t he kill the girl?
Evelyn Darkwood was still very much alive and breathing.
Pushing the door open, he stepped inside, slamming it shut behind him.
"Marcus!"
He scaled further into the house.
"Marcu—"
Marcus sprung out of nowhere, holding a knife. His shoulders were rising and falling in quick breathing. "Back off! Get out of my—"
"Marcus!" Ezekial was confused. "What is wrong with you?"
"Boss...?"
Marcus blinked, swallowing hard.
"Oh...I-it’s you."
"Yes, it’s me." Ezekial frowned. "Who else would it be? And why are you holding a knife? What’s going on?"
Marcus tossed the knife aside and began to pace back and forth in the room. "Listen, I don’t have the time for any of this or to answer anyone’s questions. Why are you here, boss?"
Ezekiel folded his arms. "We agreed that you would take the girl out. You assured me, but for the past few days, you haven’t answered my calls, and sure enough, Evelyn Darkwood is still very much alive."
"I can’t do it. I wasn’t able to." Marcus shook his head.
"What?"
"I said I couldn’t. And I don’t plan to again."
"But I paid you, Marcus. What do you mean—"
"I’ll pay the money back to you," Marcus cut him off, leaving. "I can’t do this. I can’t."
Ezekial stormed after him. "Why?"
"Because!" Marcus stopped, spun, and drew a deep breath. "Boss, you said it yourself, that man Zayne Mancini is anything but human! It sounded crazy when you said it, but I’ve seen it myself."
"Marcus—"
"Look at my face, boss." He pointed at the reddish healing scar on his face. "Who do you think did this to me?"
Ezekial blinked, at a loss for words. He was baffled.
"I almost got her. And you know snipers like us, stay a good distance, unnoticed before we make a shot. Boss, he stood in his house, lifted his head, and stared me dead in the eyes like he could see me. I watched him pick a piece of glass, throw it and it slashed across my face." Marcus cackled at himself. "He could’ve easily killed me if he wanted to, but he left me alive. Deliberately. Do you understand? Who knows if he’s coming for me?"
He shook his head, refusing, "I am not doing this job. I luckily made it out alive this time, but who’s to say I will next time? I don’t care what anyone says or if everyone thinks you and I are crazy, but Zayne Mancini is not human. He’s a fucking monster. Any normal human might think he’s just a sharp human, but snipers like you and I, both know that is beyond a human’s ability. He looked at me like he could see me clearly from that distance. His throw was calculated, without a miss."
He took out the credit card in the pocket of his pants and slapped it into Ezekial’s hand. "You’ve got to find someone else, boss. I’m off the job. I’m also leaving the country because I’m not staying here."
"Marcus." Ezekiel grabbed his hand. "You should think about this."
"There is nothing to think about, Boss. And if you’re as smart as you look, you’ll drop this job, or else it might just cost you your life. As for me, I’m not ready to die yet." Marcus snatched his hand, storming off to his room where he had his bags packed already.
Ezekial stood unmoving, confused.
Marcus was right, but how could he just drop a five million worth of a job just like that? That was how much they were willing to pay for the news of Evelyn Darkwood’s death.
His hands flexed and curled into fists.

Standing right outside the airport, a woman filled her lungs with fresh air. The wind fluttered her short blonde hair, gray eyes glancing around with lips stretched into a smile.
"Amber!"
The voice was familiar and she turned, meeting the pair of green eyes she hadn’t seen in almost two weeks.
"Hi!" She turned towards Evelyn, letting go of her suitcase and rushing towards her. She scooped her up like she weighed nothing, swirling her around, while Evelyn laughed.
Zayne was a few distance behind, furrowing his brows.
It was a bit strange. Just how much strength could this girl have?
Evelyn was not in any way such lightweight, and the blondie was clearly as slender as her. How could she just throw her around like that as if she weighed nothing? One could almost think she was an omega.
She smelt human though.
"Oh freak, that really is him," he heard her say.
Amber walked past Evelyn towards Zayne.
He stared at her, startled when she suddenly narrowed her eyes at him as if warning him.
"I know you’re rich and everything, Mr. Mancini, but if you ever hurt her in any way, I do not care how, I will find you, and I will bury you alive."
He blinked at her.
It all made sense why they were close friends. They acted the same, unhinged, like sisters.
"I see," was all he said.
Amber smiled at him and abruptly grabbed his hand, shaking it. "It’s really nice to meet you, Mr. Mancini. When Evelyn told me she was betrothed to you, I was shocked. Wow. But that reminds me, I have a question. May I go ahead?"
Evelyn approached to stand beside her, smirking.
His gaze ping-ponged between the two women and he sighed. "Yes, go ahead."
"Do you have a brother?" Amber asked.
He furrowed his brows. "What?"
"Yes, do you have a brother? I tried searching on the internet, but I couldn’t find anything personal—"
Evelyn smacked her shoulder. "Amber, that’s weird."
"Weird?" Amber asked, tilting her head. "Wait, oh, no, no, no, I wasn’t doing anything strange. I just wanted to know if he had a brother." Then she looked at Zayne. "You’re incredibly handsome, Mr. Mancini, any sibling of yours is bound to be hot. I know those genes are strong. And yes, I’m trying to set myself up for a date. I’ve been single for way too long."
Zayne averted his gaze to Evelyn.
Evelyn met his eyes.
They stared at each other for a long while.
"Zayne, um...she can...uh...be like this sometimes. Just pretend you didn’t hear anything." She awkwardly smiled at him. "By the way, I have somewhere to head to with Amber, so I’ll see you when I get home."
He narrowed his eyes on her. "You’re not afraid?"
"Not today. I have something important to do before I go to the company next week."
"Is that so?"
"Yes."
He stepped into her space, leaning in until he could whisper, "Evelyn, what are you planning? I know you’re up to something."
She didn’t turn her head, nor met his eyes, but she smiled, saying, "Nothing, Zayne. But you’ll have to wait and see."
