Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So! -
Chapter 28: Let’s Find Out
Chapter 28: Let’s Find Out
Evelyn rapidly shook off the thought, cackling to herself.
That was one heck of a hallucination.
She turned away from the window, proceeding to leave, but she halted, just a bit, glancing out again to find Agatha staring towards her... at her.
She furrowed her brows and tramped away, confused and weirded out. The door opened without so much as a creak.
Evelyn slipped in and just as she’d thought, Zayne was sound asleep, unmoving.
She tossed her bag aside on the couch, slipped off her heels, and as she made it over to the bed, she took off the jacket and suit vest she had on, leaving her in nothing but her pants and the dress shirt.
Evelyn plopped into the bed right next to Zayne, turning her head to stare at his face.
Well, he was one heck of a beautiful man.
She closed her eyes as her hand skimmed over his face, stopping to rest on his ear. She caressed his earlobe for a little while, pausing when she eventually ended up falling deep into her sleep.
Zayne, on the other hand, blinked his eyes open. He stared at her, his hand reaching up to his ear, where her fingers were still resting. He seemed rather confused by the action, but he didn’t stop her, letting her do whatever she wanted.
——
Evelyn roused herself fully out of sleep. She glanced to the other side, but it was empty. Zayne was gone.
A yawn broke out of her as she forced herself off the bed, making her way to the bathroom. She brushed, and showered, and when she came out, she’d slipped into a pair of shorts and a hoodie.
Evelyn left the room, hair still wet but almost dry. Zayne was in the kitchen just like she’d expected.
"Hi, hi, peacock. Goodmorning! Did you sleep well?" Her smile widened as she slapped her hands on the table, waiting for his response.
That response never came as the man pretended as though she weren’t in the very same room with him.
She frowned.
"Now what?"
Zayne sipped his coffee, paying her no attention.
Her face fell, but she didn’t dwell on it, turning and walking off into the kitchen to make herself a cup. "Wait, you made yourself a cup, but not for me too?"
No response.
"Hey, that’s not fair. I always make one for you when I make mine," she threw at him.
Still nothing.
Now she was beginning to get irritated. What was the attitude for?
She mixed the sugar and cream, then walked over to the dining room to sit. However, the moment she sat, Zayne rose to his feet, turning off his work phone. He left the table.
And now, she’d had enough.
Evelyn kept her cup aside and stalked after him, getting in front of him with arms spread out.
"Okay, what is your problem?" she asked. "Why are you so grumpy this morning, as if you didn’t have a good night’s sleep? I didn’t even disturb your sleep. You slept like a baby!"
Zayne stared at her, finally looked her in the eyes, but he didn’t say a word. Instead, he stepped past her, proceeding to dress up for his work.
She grabbed his hand. "You’re not going to say anything?"
He eyed her grip. "Don’t you have your company’s meeting to prepare for? It’s in three days. I don’t think I’m your biggest problem."
"You’re a very irritating man, you know that?" she snapped flippantly.
"Very mutual feelings."
"Oh, go to hell," she scoffed, pissed. "What’s wrong with me wanting to know what the problem is? If you had a roommate, wouldn’t you want to know why they are angry? I mean, if I was being strange, you’d want to know too."
Zayne gazed at her smaller figure, and slowly shook his head, turning to leave dismissively.
"Hey, we’re not done."
She stomped after him, following him out of the living room. Zayne didn’t stop walking, not even when he stepped into the bedroom and proceeded into the closet that was just as big as a foyer.
Evelyn neither halted her movement. She moved in after him, slamming the door shut with a heavy thud.
Now, that made Zayne pause. He turned and cocked a brow at her.
"What are you doing in here?"
"What do you mean, ’What am I doing in here?" She was glaring, petulant. "I told you we’re not done talking."
"Get out."
"Make me."
"Evelyn—"
She bit out incessantly, "You don’t just wake up and decide to ignore me like I don’t exist."
"Why does that matter?"
"None of your business. As long as we are living together, you don’t get to ignore me, Mr. Mancini!" She stepped into his space. "You either tell me what’s wrong or you’re dealing with me all day."
Amusement crossed Zayne’s face.
He combed his fingers through the dark strands of his hair and moved closer, till he could lean in, bent just lightly to meet her gaze equally. "What? Is it that you think I can’t handle you?"
"Can you?" She cocked a brow at him.
That stunned him a little bit. But then he grinned. "You are one brat of a human."
"Go ahead and be a bird, I don’t care," she spat.
The man rubbed his temple, stepped back, and turned, walking off to pick out a pair of suits. Evelyn advanced after him.
"Why are you following me?"
"What is your problem?"
He turned around. "What? You’re going to stand in here while I change? Are you sure you want to do that?"
"You think I’m scared?" she snorted crossly. "Pfft, of what? How big can it be?"
He drew his head back. "Oh. Are you sure about that?"
"What does it look like?"
Evelyn kept her head high, seeming like she wasn’t going to back down at all.
"Do you think I’d be afraid? I may not have even had my first kiss, but I’m not a blushing high school girl."
The man chuckled under his breath. He nodded, saying, "Alright. Let’s find out."
