Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So! -
Chapter 23: Jealous?
Chapter 23: Jealous?
Zayne frowned. "Why would I have our kind, guarding my mate? They would leave their scent on her. What if any of them bites her?"
"Well, that’s better than her dying, no?"
The death stare he gave him was enough to prompt Alessio out of his seat. He backed away, lifting his hands defensively. "I get it, Zayne. I understand why you’re worried. But you’re going to pay them to do their job. They won’t have any reason to even think of marking her. Besides, she’s human. You’re probably the only one in our kind who’d ever want to mate with a human."
"Sit down," Zayne said.
The younger man gulped and cautiously took a step towards the chair. "Should I really sit down?"
"Alessio, don’t make me repeat myself."
"Your fist hurts."
"What the hell do you mean by that? I’ve only ever even touched you once and you know what you did."
"I said sorry for that!"
"Well, then, sit down?"
"Alright." Alessio sat down, eyeing him every now and then.
"I punch just one time in the face, which was well deserved and now you’re behaving like a fucking child."
"We all do crazy stuff." Alessio shrugged.
Zayne toyed with his glass. "I’ll think over what you said and give you a response tomorrow. But in the meantime, I need you to find someone for me."
"A girlfriend?" Alessio supplied, grinning at him like a loon. But then it fell away, eyes flickering. "Oh, wait, you have a mate. Then, who do you want me to find for you?"
"A man," Zayne growled.
And that earned a brow raise from the younger man. "A man? Who?"
"Valerio."
He waited for the rest of his words, but none came. He blinked, parting his lips. "Uh...Valerio who? What’s his surname?"
"I don’t know," Zayne said calmly.
"Okay... What does he look like then? Can you describe his appearance at least?"
"No."
Alessio frowned. "Let me get this straight. You expect me to find someone you don’t even know his surname or how he looks?"
"Evelyn spoke his name," Zayne said through clenched teeth. "In her sleep."
"And?"
"Alessio, don’t," he warned. "You are good at your computer thing. You track people, find the ones who are almost impossible to find. So, find him for me."
Alessio contemplated it. "What are you? Jealous?"
"Meaning?"
"I didn’t think I’d ever witness the day you’d be jealous of another man." He chuckled as he cleared his glass. "You must really want this human."
"I’m not jealous," Zayne grounded out. "Curiosity is all it is. Nothing more."
"I beg to differ."
Alessio grinned.
"You care about the man your mate said his name in his sleep. How interesting could he be to make you so curious you had to call me up for it? Yeah, yeah, keep deluding yourself."
"Watch it," Zayne grumbled as he immediately stood to his feet. "None of this is your business and all I want you to do is find that man for me."
————
Her head pounded.
The lamp light by the side of the bed made her head ache as she slowly forced herself into a sitting position.
Evelyn looked around.
When had she fallen asleep? And how long had she been out? The last thing she recalled was—
Zayne!
She quickly touched her neck, blinking her eyes. Had that all been in her head? That thing like a bite, those smells, had it all been an imagination, maybe even a dream?
And where was she? This wasn’t his master bedroom.
She looked around and settled her feet on the cold floor.
Evelyn walked to the door and opened it.
Why hadn’t she woken up in his room? Surely, he didn’t keep her here because he was still on and on about her using the guest room, did he?
Well, he was playing a pointless game then.
Her lips dragged into a smirk.
She left, making her way over to his room. To her surprise, the door was actually left unlocked. She’d expected he’d have it close to guarantee she didn’t spawn into the room at any given time.
Zayne was laid on the bed, this time on his back, hair tousled all over the pillow. A few strands were on his face, but he looked peaceful.
"How sad. I’d rather not interrupt this peace, but he asked for it."
She walked over, closer and closer until she could lift one leg and press her feet against his chest.
"Hey, peacock, wake up!"
No response.
She furrowed her brows. He’d never given her the impression he was a deep sleeper.
"Are you pretending not to hear me, or—"
The man’s eyes snapped open, so quickly, she yelped, flinching back to step away. Zayne, however, gripped at her ankle, pulling. That made her fall over, landing above him, her forehead slamming against his chest.
She hissed, pressing her palms on either side of him to push herself up. "What did you do that for? I could have..."
Her words trailed off, lips falling softly.
The man’s eyes were the brightest of blue like she’d never seen before. Was it because of the dim lighting in the room? They were hypnotizing, almost sucking her in.
But what caught her attention aside was the glare on his face.
"I...uh..."
She slowly pushed off him, hoping off to the empty side of the bed to crawl off. "I think I’m just going to use the guest room—"
"Where do you think you’re going, huh, Evelyn?"
She met his gaze. "You’re the one who put me in the guest room, now you won’t let me go there?"
Zayne glared down at her. "You little shit!"
She sprung to her feet, wanting to run and jump off. The man, however, grabbed her ankle and yanked her back roughly. She dropped to the mattress, grunting.
"Zayne, let go of me!"
He dragged her back until he could flip her over onto her back. "Didn’t I tell you this room wasn’t yours? How could you wake up and the first thing you do is rattle my peace, huh? What kind of woman are you?"
"Excuse me!" she spat, glaring back at him. "You were the one who wanted me to be betrothed to you. I didn’t force you!"
