Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So! -
Chapter 24: Try Me
Chapter 24: Try Me
"Besides, what makes this room yours and yours only?"
"Maybe because it’s my house!" Zayne said through tight lips.
Evelyn scoffed. "Our house you mean?"
His left eye twitched.
"Listen, Mr. Mancini, as long as you keep me as your betrothed, this house is both yours and mine, which means I share your room as well. That guest room is a big fat no. Now if you want me out, you know what to do. Just say the word and—"
Zayne got off her and sat at the edge of the bed, hand dragging down his face. "Leave my room, Evelyn. I like my sleep, and seeing as you don’t let me enjoy it, I don’t want you in here!"
"Not happening."
Evelyn turned over, flat on her stomach and palms propping her chin up. She held a smile.
"You know the magic word, peacock."
"Do you think I’m stupid? Or that I didn’t know what you did with that deal you made with me?"
She shrugged. "I don’t know what you’re talking about?"
"I keep you, your safety is in my hands. I don’t keep you, your safety is still in my hands," he said.
"But," she interrupted. "If you win this, I’m permanently yours, no? I don’t go back on my words and neither do you, Mr. Mancini. Now, when people play games, they have to give it their all. What would be the fun of it if I don’t put my all into it?"
He nodded. "Alright then, the room is all yours."
"What does that mean?"
"I’d rather sleep on the sofa." Zayne pulled himself to his feet, however, before he could even make his way over, Evelyn jumped out of the bed, rushing to stand in front of him.
She spread her arms out.
"Where do you think you’re going, future husband?"
He looked unfazed as he took her in. "Evelyn, get out of my way. I don’t have the time for any of this."
"Get in the bed, Zayne," she demanded.
"You little—"
"I told you we’ll be sharing this bed since day one. Now, I don’t know what gave you the impression that I’ll let you choose the sofa."
Zayne pinched between his brows.
He moved to the side, but Evelyn was faster, shoving him so hard he slipped off his footing, falling into the bed on his back. She didn’t even allow him a second to speak, following, and using her body and gravity to pin him down.
"What the hell are you do—"
She straddled his waist, left hand pressed painfully against his chest. "I told you I wouldn’t let you choose that sofa over sharing the bed with me. You can’t be this mean, you know. I’m your future wife, honey. You’ve got to learn to be a gentleman with me."
"You are a brat."
"I know. And I’m only this way because of you, sweet cheeks." She smiled down at the shock on his face. "So then, shall we go to sleep, cuddled up to each other like the engaged couple we are, or should we draw this out more? I’m ready to go all night."
Her teeth dug into her lip, biting down her large smile.
"Get off me, girl," he said entirely too quickly.
"Answer me and then I’ll—"
His hands fell to her waist, gripping. Before she could even register what he was about to do, he flipped her over until she was on her back on the bed again, his body hovering over her.
Zayne had her hands pinned over her head, giving her no way to escape or try anything funny.
"You’re a very strange human, you know that?"
"How so?" Evelyn grinned at him, lifting both legs to wrap them around his waist, locking him in place. "Do you think just because you have my hands that I can’t hold you back too?"
He peeked at her legs and looked back at her face with an arched brow. "You bawl your eyes out, scared that you’re going to die. But the very second you wake up, you don’t care anymore, the only thing on your mind is how to make me miserable."
"Did you want me to wake up still shivering in fear? Don’t you like that I’m feeling much better now? Or did you want me to keep crying like I did yesterday?"
She smirked, pouting her lips.
"But, Zayne, I thought you didn’t want me to? You begged me to stop. The way you looked at me, I could almost swear you couldn’t stand seeing me cry."
"I just don’t want to hear you sobbing. It’s annoying!" he bit out.
Evelyn chuckled. "Are you sure? I’d say otherwise."
Zayne stared at her.
She stared back at him.
One minute.
Two minutes.
Her throat dipped in a swallow.
While his worked thickly, shoving down the lump in his throat.
The air had suddenly grown so thick, they both could feel it, almost prickling at their skin.
Her breathing felt hot as it puffed through her mouth. She couldn’t look away from those eyes that stayed locked on hers.
He wasn’t saying a word, just frozen.
And neither was she because she couldn’t find it. What to say.
Zayne’s grip on her wrist tightened. His teeth itched, cold like he’d bit into one too many sweets. He wanted to bite her—to mark, and he was unsure why that urge was suddenly all over the place.
His wolf was restless inside of him, uncontrolled.
It took everything he had for him to snap out of it, pulling off too quickly, but the legs she had around him stopped him.
Evelyn rapidly blinked, instantly breaking her legs off.
Her heart was racing.
What even was that? Why had the air just changed so quickly like that? He didn’t have to stare for so long. It’d made her anxious too and she could now vividly hear her chest pounding in her ears.
Zayne rolled off to the other side of the bed. "Do what you want. But know that I’ll tape your mouth if you say a word."
"Is that a threat?"
"Try me."
