Chapter 22: Bodyguards!

Zayne paused. His brow shot up and he tilted his head, staring at her.

Valerio...?

His face wrinkled into a frown.

Who the hell was that?

He suddenly felt so irritated, he could feel it crawling up his spine. His gaze fell to where she held his hand.

She couldn’t be mistaking him for whoever the hell Valerio was, could she?

His gaze darkened, a sharp blue, and he snatched his hand, taking a step back. He didn’t say a word but rather turned, storming out of the room.

There couldn’t be another man, right? That idiot he’d gotten rid of, was Sebastian. This person was different, and for some reason, seemed to be quite important to her. If not, why ever would she mention his name in her sleep?

Zayne snatched his phone the second he was in his room, dialing a number. It rang, the voice on the other side, male.

[You called. My brother called me. Did I do something wrong?]

"Shut the hell up, Alessio."

[What did I do? You’re the one who called me!]

His grip on the phone tightened. "Meet me at my restaurant. You and I have business."

[Oh. But I’m not the one that made you mad, am I?]

Zayne didn’t respond, hanging up.

He dragged a hand through his hair, then stalked off to the bathroom for a shower. A few more minutes later, he pulled a coat over the pair of slacks and shirt he had on.

He tied his hair into a low man bun and proceeded off, taking the elevator to the last floor.

"Agatha."

The only maid within the house, who overseered everything including the cooking, hurried out, red hair, loose and pouring past her shoulders to her bottom.

She deeply bowed, straightening up with a smile. "Sir?"

"Bind the house thoroughly and make sure no one gets into this building. Not even a damn bullet," Zayne ordered. "I’ll be gone for two hours. Hold up until then. Can you do it?"

Agatha’s smile deepened. "Of course, master. It may drain my energy, but two hours is far too little to deplete me."

"Good." He nodded. "No one is allowed in, not even Enzo. She’s in your care, until I return, alright."

"Yes, master."

The man left, slamming the door shut.

Agatha went down on her knees on the floor and pressed her palms against the marble tiles.

Was the human girl asleep?

It’d been a shock when the master suddenly came back home, wounded and with a human girl at that. She’d expected her gone by the morning, but going to four days now, and the human was still in the house.

Was she aware the master wasn’t human like her? That the only maid in the house was a witch—creatures humans were afraid of? Didn’t she ever find it strange how a house this big had only one woman taking care of it?

Oh, the poor human would freak out if she ever knew she wasn’t around humans like herself.

Closing her eyes, she began muttering spells under her breath, putting up a veil—a barrier around the entire manor.

No one could get in or leave, not even something as small as a bullet.

———

Sitting opposite Zayne within the broad restaurant, was a young man who looked much like him, but rather with blonde hair and a pair of grey eyes. He was smiling awkwardly at him, fixing the pair of glasses that rested on the bridge of his nose.

"I heard...you got yourself a wife. And...she’s human." The man was Alessio.

Zayne’s fingers grazed the cold glass of whiskey. He picked it up, downed half of it, and sat it down, the burn aching down his throat. "She’s my mate."

"Ah!" Alessio blinked. "And you want her?"

"What does it look like?"

"Well, I didn’t think you’d be interested in a human even if she was your mate," he said, crossing his legs. "Not Sage Darkwood’s daughter at the very least. Why did you want to see me though?"

"Her life is in danger," Zayne said.

Alessio leaned towards him. "Danger? What do you mean?"

"Sage handed the entire corporation to her in his will, and her siblings are not accepting it. They’re pressed, but she’s not going to give the corporation to them, definitely not Preston. At least, I won’t allow it. She had the most potential of all his kids, Sage told me that. And I’ll make sure she keeps the corporation, I assured him of that before he signed that will."

"Let me guess," Alessio said as he lifted a brow. "They’re after her life now?"

Zayne nodded. "Hit men, snipers. Yes."

"Shit. Aren’t they her siblings? Will they really kill her over a corporation? I mean I understand the frustration, but still..." Alessio waved his hand. "I don’t even know what to say. That’s just cruel. What are you going to do now though?"

Zayne shifted. "Could you add more surveillance cameras at my manor?"

"You mean, you want me to watch your house constantly and be on alert?"

"Yes."

"That’s not a problem, but I don’t think that’s going to be enough."

Zayne felt uneasy. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, tight surveillance is okay, yes, however, do you think you can stop them by the time I alert you?"

"What are you pointing at?"

"Bodyguards!" Alessio blurted out.

Zayne frowned. "I’ve thought of that, Alessio, but it’s too risky. Bodyguards can betray you. Anyone can hurt her, and I’d rather not add to it."

Alessio shrugged. "I’d say, get her one, Zayne. You can never be too careful. If you’re focused on disadvantages, you’ll never get anything done. Yes, a bodyguard can betray you, but they can also protect her. You won’t always be there, you can’t hide the human forever. You need someone, a group that can ensure her safety. Besides, who said the bodyguards had to be...human?"

Zayne leveled his gaze. "Meaning?"

"Betas, Zayne. Common, put on your thinking cap, brother. You’re usually smarter than this." Alessio whispered, "Not many alphas would want to protect a human girl, but betas...betas are a different story. Three of them with at least one alpha is enough to keep your mate safe. All you have to do is pay them well. What do you say?"
