Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 75: Vision
Chapter 75: Chapter 75: Vision
Seeing it was already noon, and Shen Wenchen and his group hadn’t returned, Nanzhi was a little worried.
Could it be that the sun was so fierce that they had all been struck by heatstroke on the mountain?
Just as she was thinking this, she spotted Shen Wenchen in the distance, waving at her with a basket on his back.
Seeing the man’s silly expression, Nanzhi laughingly entered the kitchen.
Yesterday, making those Steamed Buns, she used four pounds of whole wheat flour and five pounds of chestnut flour!
For lunch, she would just cook some porridge and make some pancakes, to avoid the food being too dry and choking people.
With this in mind, Nanzhi rolled up her sleeves and began to work.
When Shen Wenchen led the people into the courtyard, he only saw Shen Zhiyu sitting on a stool playing and couldn’t help but be curious.
Didn’t he just see Nannan at the door?
After setting down his basket, Shen Wenchen had the three men quickly rest in the hall, and then he entered the kitchen.
"Nannan, is there anything I can help with?"
Seeing the man sweating profusely and coming close to her, Nanzhi rolled her eyes, then handed him a bowl of water and said dismissively, "You should rest for a while."
Noticing her disdain, Shen Wenchen paused in his action and then took the bowl with a big grin on his face.
"I knew you wouldn’t mind me."
With a gulp of cool water, Shen Wenchen couldn’t help but find the water sweet.
"Okay, after you drink the water, go to the backyard and bring in a chicken or a duck. We’ll cook it for lunch today."
Nanzhi ignored his words and continued speaking to herself.
"Alright."
Without saying more, the man put down the bowl, took a knife, and headed towards the backyard.
Upon seeing Shen Wenchen’s fierce expression, the River Clam, who had been enjoying the cool water Nanzhi had put in a wooden tub earlier, immediately shut its shell in fear.
Shen Wenchen went straight to the corner where the poultry was confined and aimed to pick a fat one.
The caged birds were afraid and huddled together; one hen, startled, laid an egg.
Shen Wenchen paused in his action and felt a bit sorry.
This chicken could lay eggs, which was useful, so he decided to spare her.
He then turned his gaze to another hen.
Feeling the stare, the other hen trembled and also forced herself to lay an egg.
Shen Wenchen was stunned. What did this mean?
Why did both hens lay eggs when he came over?
In the end, he picked up a goose to make short work of it.
Since both hens could lay eggs, they should keep them to nourish Nannan and Zhiyu. The goose looked a bit foolish, perfect for making a meaty soup.
In less than fifteen minutes, Shen Wenchen cleaned up the goose meat and brought it to the kitchen.
Nanzhi, seeing his goose, didn’t say much. She pushed the chopped potatoes into the sieve, then began to chop up the goose.
Shen Wenchen didn’t go out to play with Shen Zhiyu but just stood aside and watched.
After a while, they heard the sound of hooves outside, and he hurriedly left the kitchen.
When he was gone, Nanzhi finally let out a breath. With Shen Wenchen around, she was always afraid her disguise would be exposed.
Ah Er and Twelfth each brought back some goods. Shen Wenchen then received the things from Twelfth.
"The grains in this town are really expensive now," lamented Twelfth, while handing over the goods.
"Whole wheat flour is forty wen per pound. But compared to the county seat, it’s indeed cheaper."
"Brother Shen, I bought some aged rice, white flour, and a fair amount of oil and salt. They’re all here."
Twelfth patted the grain sack, while Ah Er helped unload the hay from the cart with the young worker who had come to deliver it.
In the end, about half of the items were stacked in the front yard before the two delivery men received their silver and left.
Shen Wenchen looked up at the sky and called out, "Bring the stuff over here and put them aside first, then go wash your hands to prepare for the meal."
After responding, several people moved the straw into the firewood room and then headed to the backyard to wash off their sweat.
Once the meat was stewed, Nanzhi called everyone to eat.
The porridge brewed with goose meat had already cooled, for a while the room was filled only with the sound of people slurping porridge.
Everyone had been busy all morning, so Nanzhi didn’t ask them to clean up. She collected the dishes and went to the backyard after washing them.
She didn’t need to feed the horses in the front yard, but she still needed to check on the poultry in the backyard.
There were two hens, three ducks, and two geese in the enclosure, all taking shelter and cooling off by the wall.
When they saw Nanzhi approach, they reacted as if they were frightened.
Nanzhi was considering continuing to raise them or having Shen Wenchen slaughter them when she saw two eggs under the hen.
Picking them up, she exclaimed appreciatively, "Well, I guess we’ll keep these two."
Where could they get extra grain to raise these animals?
The poultry in the pen trembled inexplicably at her words. Only when Nanzhi had left did they move slightly.
Having collected two eggs, Nanzhi was inevitably pleased. With only rice, flour, and sweet potatoes at home, having two hens laying eggs to supplement Zhiyu’s diet was unquestionably a great thing.
"Nannan."
Shen Wenchen had just finished cleaning up the front yard and ran into a pleased-looking Nanzhi. After hesitating, he shamelessly said, "Can I sleep next to Zhiyu tonight?"
Zhiyu, who was playing with toys in the main room, heard his father mention his name and immediately advocated for him, "Mom, I want to sleep next to dad!"
Nanzhi looked at Shen Wenchen, then glanced at Zhiyu with his hopeful face, and smiled, "Alright, then Zhiyu will sleep next to your dad tonight."
Having said that, she left for the kitchen without looking back. Thinking of sleeping with her?
Dream on!
Looking at Nanzhi’s retreating figure, the father and son exchanged a glance. Shen Wenchen forced a chuckle, "Zhiyu, do you want to sleep with dad tonight?"
The little guy shook his head, "No, I want to sleep with mom!"
With that, he took the little wooden sword in his hand and ran after Nanzhi into the kitchen.
He didn’t want to sleep with dad and those uncles!
Mom smells good, dad must stink!
"Mom, mom, I want to sleep with you tonight." The little guy clung to Nanzhi’s leg and acted like a spoiled child.
"Aren’t you going to sleep with dad?"
"Mom smells good, want to sleep with mom! Dad stinks!"
Shen Wenchen sighed when he heard this outside the door.
He felt somewhat heartbroken, thinking about the hardships his wife had endured over the past three years. All he could do was shake his head, acknowledging his mistakes.
He wondered if Nannan had seen the thing he left on her dressing table.
In the afternoon, Shen Wenchen and a dozen others followed Nanzhi’s instructions and slaughtered the ducks and geese in the enclosure, including the rabbits that Nanzhi had brought back. Only the two egg-laying hens were spared.
In no time, the eaves in the backyard were covered with plucked poultry.
After dinner, Nanzhi took Zhiyu, who had been cleaned up, back to their room to rest.
Even though he was reluctant, Shen Wenchen could only follow Ada and the other men into their room.
"Brother Shen, what are you doing?" asked the youngest, rubbing his eyes curiously when he saw Shen Wenchen carrying a basin of water into the room.
"To cool the room."
At the fourth watch.
The two hens in the backyard suddenly seemed to have been startled by something, huddling together and looking up at the dark sky.
The river clam in the wooden basin suddenly opened its shell, expelled a row of dense bubbles, and then closed it again.
