Chapter 76: Chapter 76 Locust Plague 1_1

The Hour of the Ox.

Suddenly, the temperature in Qingyun county rose.

Dahuang, who usually lay at the entrance of Lihua Village, shivered all over, staring blankly at the half-empty sky nearby, while another black dog also ceased its digging.

In less than half the time it takes to drink a cup of tea, a chorus of dogs barking rose from Lihua Village.

The horses in the yard became agitated for no apparent reason, flicking their tails as if they wished they could touch the sky—it was their way of trying to rid themselves of the invaders biting at their flesh.

"Mommy," Shen Zhiyu suddenly woke up, sat up, and rubbed his sleepy eyes, calling out for his mother somewhat dazedly.

Why is it so noisy outside?

Instinctively, he stretched out his little hand to the side, only to feel a palm fan. His big eyes immediately became misty with tears.

He didn’t get out of bed for a long while, holding back his tears by remembering his mother’s words that she would never leave him behind.

"Mommy!"

The little one, bare-bodied, called out as he slowly groped his way to open the door and stepped outside.

"Zhiyu!"

Hearing the door being opened, Nanzhi felt a sudden pang of anxiety in her heart and reached out to push him back into the room.

"Mommy!"

The little one, hearing his mother’s voice, smiled and reached out his hands to go to her.

"Zhiyu, get back inside quickly!" Shen Wenchen, seeing the little one approaching, immediately put on a stern face and pushed Nanzhi’s arm in the direction of Shen Zhiyu.

"Nannan, take Zhiyu back inside!"

Nanzhi didn’t dawdle, and, with a general acknowledgment, hurriedly scooped up the little one and scurried back into the house, locking the door before breathing a sigh of relief.

"Zhiyu, be good, you can’t go out," Nanzhi said softly as she held the little one and placed him on the bed, comforting him gently.

"Mommy, I just woke up, and you weren’t there beside me, I was scared," Shen Zhiyu said with a muffled voice, gripping the fabric over Nanzhi’s chest and calming down as he smelled her scent.

Only with his mother nearby did he feel no fear.

"Zhiyu isn’t scared. There are bugs outside, Mommy just went to deal with them. Daddy was worried the bugs might bite you, so he had Mommy bring you inside," Nanzhi explained as she held Shen Zhiyu and softly patted his back, feeling goosebumps at the thought of the scene she had just witnessed outside.

A quarter hour earlier she had been awakened by the neighing of the horses outside; she thought the heat was too much for them, so she had decided to fetch a few buckets of well water to cool them down.

But no sooner had she stepped out the front door than her face was assailed by some kind of insect.

She ran into Shen Wenchen who had come out to see what was going on, and after they captured those few insects, the matter seemed settled.

Without the strange insects blocking her vision, she could finally see the spectacle outside clearly.

The entire sky suddenly took on an eerie orange hue, teeming with swarms of something flying at a tremendously fast pace towards the horizon; lots of insects continued to dive into the courtyard, and the sound of insects gnawing on wood could be sporadically heard even from the front yard.

Shen Wenchen said those densely packed dots in the sky were all locusts.

The thought of locusts flying at her face made Nanzhi shudder once more.

Upon hearing her words, the little one’s slight displeasure from being shouted at by his own father earlier completely vanished.

If there were bugs outside and Daddy yelled at him out of urgency,

and if Daddy had pushed Mommy to come inside to protect her, then Zhiyu, as a smart and sensible child, decided not to be mad at Daddy anymore.

Recalling that his father was outside to protect them, the little one, tilting his head, asked, "Mommy, will Daddy get bitten by the bugs?"

Detecting the worry in her child’s words, Nanzhi touched his head and reassured him softly, "Daddy is so strong, nothing will happen to him."

Mother and son hid inside the house while the six people outside were so busy they were practically out of breath.

The locusts were like mad, swarming toward them again and again.

Some locusts were so vicious they even flew onto them to bite and gnaw their flesh.

"I’ve been bitten!" Eleven suddenly shouted, momentarily unable to react. Why were these insects so fierce?

Shen Wenchen had just killed several locusts that were flying toward him and couldn’t help but laugh at Eleven’s reaction, "If you keep zoning out, your ears will be completely gnawed off."

Hearing Shen Wenchen’s words, Eleven shuddered.

He had fought in so many battles and not once did his ears get injured. If he were to be gnawed on by a few locusts and tell his brothers, wouldn’t he be laughed to death?

No, he couldn’t afford to become the butt of such a joke.

The six of them each dealt with the locusts invading the yard until, at dawn, the insects in the sky seemed to cease their assault and gradually disappeared.

Only then could the six of them take a breather.

Looking at the courtyard filled with locusts, Shen Wenchen wiped the fine sweat off his forehead.

Why would there be a Locust Plague here?

In his previous life, he distinctly remembered that at this time there was a great drought, not just a half-year rainless drought, but a brutal one that claimed the lives of over thirteen hundred people!

In his previous life, he had never heard of a Locust Plague in Qingyun County!

Hearing that the commotion had stopped outside, Nanzhi finally put the soundly sleeping Shen Zhiyu down on the bed.

Feeling her clothes being tightly grasped at the chest, Nanzhi sighed in her heart and whispered, "Zhiyu, Mommy is just going to check the courtyard."

The little guy seemed to have heard her as he finally released his small hands.

As soon as Nanzhi opened the door, she only saw Shen Wenchen, Ada, and Eleven cleaning up the locusts’ carcasses in the front yard, a layer of yellow-green insect bodies horrifyingly scattered across the ground.

Even the door of her own house had many gnawed marks on it.

Do locusts even gnaw on wood?

Nanzhi had never experienced a Locust Plague, so how would she know?

Looking at Shen Wenchen’s white undergarment spotted with yellow-green juices, Nanzhi, who initially wanted to show some concern, suddenly stopped in her tracks.

Shen Wenchen, however, saw her hesitance and looked at her with eyes full of expectation.

Being watched like that, Nanzhi felt somewhat guilty.

It was as if not going over to him was committing a terrible crime.

So she forced a laugh and asked, "Are you, are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?"

Hearing Nanzhi’s concern, Shen Wenchen felt all his exhaustion vanish, and with a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth he said, "I’m fine, these locusts can’t hurt me. I just knew Nannan cares about me."

The man’s voice was deep, and because he was in such a good mood, the tail end of his words turned up slightly, making Nanzhi involuntarily blush.

How could this man’s voice be so seductive?

"Nannan, why are your ears so red?" Shen Wenchen, seeing the look on his wife’s face, knew she must be feeling shy.

Carrying a bit of mischief, he began walking towards her and teasingly said, "Did a locust bite you? Let me have a look..."

Watching his handsome face approaching her, slowly closing in, and getting progressively larger before her eyes, Nanzhi suddenly felt her heart stop.

Then, as if the deer inside her was drawn to the outside world, it wanted to break through that barrier!

The two stood very close, and Nanzhi thought she could even feel Shen Wenchen’s breath.

But then, a strange scent suddenly invaded her nostrils, bursting the pink bubble that had just formed.

How stinky!
