Chapter 74: Chapter 74: Imperial Jade Liquid Wine!_1
"It’s good to be back, good to be back," Shen Dashan said as he looked Shen Wenchen over from left to right and then nodded.
"Now that you’re back, don’t go running around anymore. It’s hard for Lin to raise Zhiyu by herself."
Shen Wenchen could only nod in agreement to his elder’s earnest advice.
Off to the side, Nanzhi felt there was something amiss while pulling Shen Zhiyu along, but looking at the man greeting the villagers, she couldn’t pinpoint what was wrong.
"Nannan, let’s go," Shen Wenchen said with a smile after greeting everyone in the village.
"Oh, let’s go." Maybe she was overthinking it.
When the family of three arrived at the grave site, Nanzhi led Shen Wenchen to his father’s and mother’s graves and then realized she had forgotten something!
Who worships their ancestors without offerings!
Being a woman of the western deserts herself, how could she come to worship at the ancestors’ graves without any offerings? What if they really got angry and came looking for her at night?
With these thoughts, Nanzhi felt somewhat guilty, simply standing aside, not daring to go forward.
"Mom, let’s ask Grandpa and Grandma to bless us too," Shen Zhiyu tugged at Nanzhi’s clothes, finding it strange to see her just standing there.
Why was Mom acting so oddly today?
"Zhiyu, you go ahead. Mom is a bit tired and will rest here for a while," Nanzhi said gently, shaking her head and signaling him to go over to Shen Wenchen.
The little fellow looked at his mom and then at his dad kneeling nearby, and after some thought, he instructed Nanzhi to sit and rest for a while.
Receiving Nanzhi’s consent, he then turned and ran toward the grave.
When Shen Zhiyu arrived, all he saw were tears streaming down his dad’s face, and the hand he had intended to use to tug on his clothes silently withdrew.
Dad doesn’t have a dad and mom anymore; he must be sad, right?
Recalling how the village children used to taunt him for not having a dad, the little guy felt his nose sting and carefully knelt down beside Shen Wenchen.
Feeling guilty, Shen Wenchen suddenly heard the tender voice of his son beside him, "Grandpa and Grandma, please bless Dad, Mom, and Zhiyu so we can have enough to eat. Dad was sick before and forgot about us, that’s why he didn’t come back to see you! But Mom said that now Dad is better, he’ll remember us! Don’t be mad at Dad, okay?"
Listening to the little one’s words, Shen Wenchen was stunned for a moment, then wiped away his tears and laughed out loud.
But he was scolded by Shen Zhiyu kneeling beside him, "Mom said! You can’t laugh at times like this! Dad’s a fool!"
Nanzhi, who was waiting to the side, was startled by the laughter. Something felt off. She had already burned all the incense and paper money left at home during the Ghost Festival. Where did Shen Wenchen get what he was burning now?
Could it be that he bought it?
But how did he know that Dad and Mom had passed away?
He hadn’t asked when he came back last night, and then suddenly this morning, he said he wanted to visit the graves?
The more she thought about it, the more something seemed off, and she started to doubt the man before her.
Could this Shen Wenchen also be an impostor?
With her mind preoccupied, she didn’t even react when the father and son stood in front of her.
It wasn’t until Shen Zhiyu tugged at her clothes that she came back to her senses.
"What are you thinking about?" Shen Wenchen looked into Nanzhi’s eyes and felt something strange. For some reason, he always felt that Nannan had changed, become a little odd.
He tried hard to recall the sight of his wife but it remained a blurry mess.
Looking at the man before her, Nanzhi decided to take a chance and probe, clearing her throat before speaking, "Imperial Jade Liquid Wine!"
Shen Wenchen was taken aback. What Imperial Jade Liquid Wine?
How could they casually discuss matters of the palace?
Making sure no one else was around, he raised an eyebrow and looked at her intently.
Seeing that he didn’t carry on with the next line, Nanzhi’s heart eased a little.
At least Shen Wenchen was real, not a Transmigrator.
"No, it’s nothing, but how did you know where Mom and Dad..."
Seeing that Nanzhi hadn’t continued, Shen Wenchen picked up Shen Zhiyu and, walking in front, said, "I ran into Yun Tian when I returned yesterday. We chatted for a bit, and he’s the one who gave me the incense, candles, and joss paper."
Seeing the man’s nonchalant demeanor, Nanzhi finally felt completely at ease.
It seemed she had been overthinking, but she still had to go thank Liu’s mother for her kindness.
Nanzhi didn’t ask any more questions, and Shen Wenchen also secretly breathed a sigh of relief; he would have to get in touch with Yun Tian later.
By the time the three of them returned to their own doorstep, the sun had already risen high in the sky.
"What about those horses of yours?" Nanzhi asked after closing the gate, pointing at the horses in the front yard.
The few horses kept in the yard were giving off quite the odor...
And, according to the plot, since he had joined the military, these horses had become military horses. She definitely didn’t know how to care for military horses.
"Don’t worry about it; I’ll take care of it in a bit," said Shen Wenchen as he pulled Nanzhi into the main hall.
With the weather being too hot, Nanzhi couldn’t be bothered to take Shen Zhiyu outside. Mindful that there were still five men at home, she just led the little one to the room to play.
With plenty of toys on hand, Shen Zhiyu grabbed a rattle-drum, waved to Shen Wenchen, and then scurried into the room.
After watching the mother and son close the room door, Shen Wenchen went to wake up the five men who were still taking their after-breakfast nap.
"Big Brother Shen, what’s the matter?" Eleven, yawning, asked.
"We’re going up the mountain to cut grass," replied Shen Wenchen, glancing at Eleven before patting Old Nine.
"Cut grass for what?" Eleven smacked his lips, a bit curious. Could it be to collect the grass for firewood?
But he clearly remembered there was still a good amount of firewood in the woodshed, wasn’t there?
"Your horse doesn’t need to be fed, or are you planning to share your own food with it?"
Once everyone was up, Shen Wenchen took out ten taels of silver and gave it to Ah Er, instructing him to go to the town to buy some fodder.
He then gave Twelve twenty taels of silver to buy some grain and condiments.
Watching the two of them ride off on their horses, he led Ah Da, Eleven, and Old Nine out the door with their sickles.
Military horses were especially precious, and not a single detail in their care could go wrong. There were specialized personnel to maintain them in the military; outside, however, they had to oversee it themselves.
Nanzhi played with Shen Zhiyu with the toys in the room for a while but soon grew a bit bored. That’s when she noticed an extra wooden box on the dressing table.
Fueled by curiosity, she opened it and saw a carved wooden hairpin inside.
Nanzhi was taken aback. Was this a gift from Shen Wenchen?
But she knew even without thinking too hard that it was meant for the original owner of the body. Nanzhi simply closed the box and was going to put it away in the cupboard when she noticed there was something else underneath.
Upon picking it up, she saw they were two fifty-tael silver notes.
Staring at the numbers printed on the light pieces of paper, Nanzhi’s jaw nearly dropped in shock.
A hundred taels!
She’d have to sell over ninety rabbits!
Looking at the two silver notes, Nanzhi felt like crying, but no tears came out—she wanted to take them!
But it was Shen Wenchen’s money, what did it have to do with her?
In the end, she painfully stuffed them back into the wooden box and hid it in the drawer.
Right now, she and Zhiyu were living without any worries about food and drink; she couldn’t take this money.
And she was still hiding those five pearls and forty-five copper plates!
