Chapter 65: Tricking the sister?!
Chapter 65: Chapter 65: Tricking the sister?!
Nanzhi rushed over as soon as she spotted the hemp ropes tied around tree trunks from afar.
Five out of the six-rope traps she had set had been triggered, but three of them were empty. The fourth looked like an animal had managed to escape, but the last one had ensnared a fat rabbit.
The rabbit tried to free itself as it saw her approach, but the hemp ropes had it tightly bound.
"Mom! We caught another one!"
The child’s eyes lit up at the sight of the rabbit; two rabbits would be enough to feed them for a long time!
Nanzhi secured the rabbit’s legs before undoing the rope of the trap.
She lifted the rabbit up to weigh it. It must have been over five pounds. Holding the heavy rabbit in her hands, she found herself wishing she could start a fire and roast it right then and there.
Remembering a popular saying among her friends, she resisted drooling and continued setting up her traps.
’Love blossoms over a mountain fire.’
Given the current dry weather, if she dared to start a fire up in the mountains, she would likely set the entire forest ablaze.
Only after resetting the traps did Nanzhi head downhill, leading Shen Zhiyu by hand.
"Mom, what are we eating tonight?" Shen Zhiyu asked.
"Roast rabbit." Nanzhi smacked her lips, revealing that she was not very skilled in cooking. If anything, she could grill food well.
Ever since her grandmother’s passing, she had been supporting herself by taking part-time jobs.
At first, she would distribute advertising flyers, but then she found a part-time job at a food stall outside her school. The cook there was kind, teaching her how to grill. From that point, she went from waitress to grill apprentice, earning much more in the process.
"Okay, okay!" The little fellow nodded his head vigorously. Mom’s cooking was delicious, and the grilled fish was always fragrant.
In this heat, pretty much everyone in Lihua Village stayed indoors during the daytime, choosing to grind chestnut flour at the edge of the village only in the morning or after sunset.
As she passed by the edge of the village, Nanzhi instinctively glanced toward the river. Not seeing the two siblings in sight, she exhaled in relief.
The scorching sun was lethal. If the two young children suffered a heatstroke, it would be a serious problem.
Theoretically, their family must have stored food at home. With the adults gone and only two kids left, there should be plenty of food to go around.
Lost in her thoughts, Nanzhi didn’t pay much attention to her surroundings. It was only when she was stopped that she snapped back to reality.
Shen Yuntian found Nanzhi’s absent-mindedness rather amusing. Had he not stopped her in time, she would have run into a tree. He suppressed his laughter and asked, "What’s on your mind, Sister-in-law?"
"Ah, it’s you, Yuntian." Nanzhi came back to her senses and glanced at the wooden stake behind Yuntian. If he hadn’t stopped her, she would have walked straight into it.
She cracked a shy, awkward smile.
"What are you up to?"
"I’m taking Doudou out to the mountains to look around. Maybe we can catch a rabbit or a wild chicken."
Shen Yuntian gestured toward Doudou who was talking with Shen Zhiyu nearby.
Now Nanzhi noticed the bow and arrows on Shen Yuntian’s back.
Thinking back, she remembered that her husband used to take Shen Yuntian hunting in the mountains.
The two didn’t have much to say to each other so, after a few awkward pleasantries, they both went their separate ways.
"Brother Doudou, let’s play together tonight!"
"Okay!"
Watching the two reluctant children waving their hands, Nanzhi and Yuntian could not help but chuckle.
"Well, we’d better get going now."
"Hmm."
Once home, Zhiyu noticed Nanzhi’s red face looking peculiar and quickly got her a bowl of water.
"Mom, your face is all red from the sun!"
Nanzhi felt a burning sensation on her face, and she coughed before accepting the bowl and said, "Thanks Zhiyu."
How embarrassing to be caught in the act.
After having a drink of water, Nanzhi finally collected her composure.
What was there to lose? It was just a little embarrassment after all.
Looking at the rabbits in her basket, Nanzhi was once again at a loss.
She could kill a fish, but she did not know how to do the same to a rabbit.
The two lively rabbits made it difficult for her to take action.
She wondered if the heavens understood her plight.
As she was worrying, a knock came from the door.
"Who is it!" Zhiyu’s childish voice shouted towards the door.
"Gougou! It’s your uncle!" Lin Yicheng knocked again and called out.
"Uncle’s here!" Upon hearing who was at the door, the little tyke rushed to open it, only revealing his little head and not letting them in directly.
"I have a proper name now! I’m not called Gougou anymore, my name is Shen Zhiyu!"
Hearing their nephew’s words, Lin Yicheng and Lin Ercheng were startled. If they were not mistaken, Gougou was not even four years old yet. How did the child obtain an adult name?
Lin Ercheng, who was a bit more clever, saw the eager expression on his little nephew’s face and said: "Zhiyu, Uncle’s here, open the door quickly."
As he spoke, he lightly knocked on the courtyard door and the little one then happily moved out of the way and let them in.
Upon hearing the voices of her two older brothers outside the door, Nanzhi dragged the basket she had earlier hidden under the table.
"Big brother, second brother, why are you here?"
Lin Yicheng inspected his sister for a moment, seeing she has picked up some weight since his last visit, he nodded his head in satisfaction, "Last night, we went hunting in the mountains and caught three wild chickens. Mother asked us to bring one over to you."
He pointed towards the basket on Lin Ercheng’s back as he spoke.
Lin Ercheng put down the basket, removed the straw cover and extracted the wild chicken.
Nanzhi circled the chicken once before asking with curiosity, "Big brother, second brother, you two can hunt?"
Lin Yicheng chuckled, scratched his head and said, "We didn’t really hunt this chicken."
"We learned an old trick, sprinkling rice soaked in wild fruit juices on the mountain. Given how desperate things are nowadays, those wild creatures don’t have much to eat, and we managed to catch three all at once."
Hearing her second brother’s explanation, Nanzhi was full of questions. Wild fruit?
What was that?
Seeing Nanzhi’s confusion, Lin Ercheng said, "You know, those fruits on the mountain, just one bite and anyone would sleep for two days!"
Upon Lin Ercheng’s explanation, Nanzhi finally recalled the fruit. If she wasn’t mistaken, it was the same fruit that made her lose consciousness for two days as a child after her two naive brothers tricked her into eating it.
Seeing that Nanzhi remembered, Lin Yicheng coughed and tried to stomp on his brother.
Nanzhi just rolled her eyes and walked back to the room to sit.
"That was ages ago. You’re not mad anymore, right?" Lin Ercheng coaxed Nanzhi after seeing her puffed-up cheeks.
How could he have forgotten that it was he and his brother who coaxed Nanzhi into eating that fruit? Nanzhi was only six years old then and after eating that fruit, she slept for two days straight. Their father went off the deep end and almost beat them to pulp.
"If you want me not to be mad, you need to do me a favor." Nanzhi said with a petulant look.
"There’s no need to beat around the bush, just say it." Lin Yicheng waved his hand. There was no such thing as unwillingness to help.
"Help me kill the rabbits."
After Nanzhi finished speaking, she swiftly uncovered the straw from the basket, revealing the two wild rabbits inside.
"These, you caught them?" Lin Yicheng widened his eyes with astonishment, was his little sister really so capable?
"Nanzhi, have you learned hunting from your brother-in-law?" Lin Ercheng held up a rabbit and felt its weight, it was heavier than he expected. Together, these rabbits must have weighed around eight to nine pounds!
Nanzhi was about to say she learned it from watching TV shows, but she swallowed the words back down and simply said, "Well, I learned how to make a rabbit snare."
