Chapter 64: Chapter 64 Harvesting Prey_1
"Zhiyu, how did you catch this little bug?" Nanzhi took the insect and began examining it closely.
She felt it looked more and more familiar.
"It fell from the sky!" the little guy pointed upwards, telling Nanzhi.
"From the sky?" Nanzhi looked up at the sky, but where was there any trace of an insect?
"Okay, you go play by yourself, be careful not to let the bug bite your hand."
Gougou gave a response and went out the door again with the insect in his grasp.
Brother Doudou is the smartest!
Brother Doudou definitely knows what this bug is.
The little one started banging on the Shen Family’s gate, shouting, "Brother Doudou, I’m here to play with you!"
Inside the courtyard, Duoduo, who’d been bored, heard Shen Zhiyu’s voice and immediately stood up excitedly.
Just as he was about to run and open the gate, he instinctively paused, turning his head to look at his grandmother.
Yesterday, his grandma dragged him back by the ear and spanked him, and she also said not to go out and play...
Mrs. Liu heard Shen Zhiyu’s breathless voice outside the door and her heart softened completely, looking at her mischievous grandson she lost her anger.
Little kids are supposed to tease cats and dogs at this age, and getting punished for a trip outside is enough to teach them a lesson.
"Go on," she said.
With his granny’s permission, Doudou almost jumped up to scream in joy, as if afraid Mrs. Liu would change her mind, he quickly went to open the door.
In just this short while, Shen Zhiyu’s face had already started to sweat, and his little face had become very red from the sun.
"Gougou, come inside quickly!"
Lighting up, Doudou’s smile almost reached his ears until he realized there was no movement. Puzzled for a moment, he then called out again, "Zhiyu, come on in, come on in!"
Upon hearing Doudou using the correct name, the youngster wiped the sweat from his forehead and followed into the courtyard.
Upon entering, he immediately shouted to Mrs. Liu peeling chestnuts under the eaves, "Hello, Grandma Liu, hello, Aunt Wan, hello, Aunt Xiaoliu, I’ve come to play with Brother Doudou."
Mrs. Liu was so delighted that her eyes almost crinkled closed, waving her hands she said, "Zhiyu, come here, let Grandma Liu give you some water to drink, look how hot you are."
As she got up to pour some water, Ms. Wan, who was nearby, quickly went into the main room, poured some water, and handed it to her mother-in-law.
After drinking water from the bowl, the little one wiped his mouth and smiled his thanks.
Then, under Doudou’s expectant gaze, the two children held hands and went under the shed.
Since the weather was extremely hot, the Shen family did not dismantle the shed in the yard even after their house was repaired, and Doudou would play there with his younger brothers and sisters.
"Brother Doudou, look at the bug I found." The little guy quietly took out the insect he’d just picked up from his bosom and handed it to Doudou.
Doudou looked at the insect handed to him with some curiosity, examined it closely, and then made a sound of surprise, "This seems like a grasshopper, but grasshoppers are green, how come yours isn’t?"
"Could it be some kind of treasure?" Duoduo, a child from the second branch of the Shen Family, also came over to join the crowd.
"A treasure?"
"What treasure?"
Doudou and Shen Zhiyu both cocked their heads to look at Duoduo, waiting for his next words.
Duoduo was just five years old, how could he know what treasure it was? He simply scratched his little head and said, "I don’t know."
"Then what are you talking about!" Niuniu, Doudou’s sister who was about the same age as Duoduo, heard his useless talk and just pulled a face.
"Then do you know what it is?"
With a huff, Niuniu turned her head and ran off.
Watching her run, Duoduo quickly followed, leaving only Shen Zhiyu and Doudou staring at each other wide-eyed.
"Why did they run away?"
"They must be afraid of Sister telling on them."
"Okay," Shen Zhiyu blinked his eyes, then squatted down again to continue playing with the grasshopper with Doudou.
Nanzhi finished preparing lunch at home and called Shen Zhiyu back to the house. Mother and son ate before taking their afternoon nap.
"Mom, are we going to check on the rabbits after I wake up?"
The little guy lay in bed, his small eyes struggling to stay open, and asked with a soft voice.
"Yes, once Zhiyu wakes up, Mom will take you to see if we caught any rabbits."
With Nanzhi’s promise, the little guy turned over and fell asleep in no time.
Looking at Shen Zhiyu’s sleeping profile, Nanzhi felt a bit dazed.
How long had she been here now?
More than twenty days, right?
Nanzhi glanced again at the little one sleeping soundly and used a fan to fan him for a bit.
As soon as the little guy woke up, the first thing he wanted to do was to drag Nanzhi out the door to East Mountain.
Seeing his excitement, Nanzhi did not refuse. She only slung two bamboo tubes of water at her waist before she put on a carrying basket and led him out the door.
Just as they reached the end of the village, Nanzhi saw from afar a small figure in the river catching fish.
She was wondering which child would be in the river under the hot sun when she saw a little girl sleeping under a tree.
It was hot, and the river had been getting shallower these past couple of days. Xiaoqi had been feeling around in the mud for the whole afternoon with little to show for it. Just when he felt something underfoot, he saw two people, one big, one small, on the riverbank looking at him.
Thinking of his sister still on the bank, Xiaoqi panicked a bit, but after recognizing Nanzhi as the person who had brought sweet potatoes for him and his sister before, Xiaoqi’s anger subsided.
Feeling the gaze of the boy in the river, Nanzhi shuddered, then continued with the little one towards East Mountain.
"Mom, what’s wrong?" The little one curiously looked at his flustered mother.
He glanced back at the person in the river and noticed that the boy was still staring at them. He quickly turned his head back around.
That brother seemed quite fierce.
No wonder Mom was scared.
Once the pair ascended the mountain, Nanzhi broke out in a sweat again. It was only when they entered the deep forest and felt the sudden drop in temperature that she almost wanted to lie down on the ground and sleep.
The temperature at the base of the mountain wouldn’t be lower than 34 degrees Celsius, but on East Mountain, it was probably around 31 degrees, and upon entering this patch of forest, it likely had dropped to 26 degrees.
While Nanzhi was still stretching and enjoying the coolness, Shen Zhiyu had already started running towards the place where they had set the trap.
Seeing her son run off, Nanzhi quickly picked up the carrying basket and followed closely behind.
When they reached the spot, Nanzhi saw the little one excitedly opening his mouth wide as if afraid to disturb something; he pointed at the ground with his little finger.
Following the direction of his hand, Nanzhi was delighted to see that the entrance to the hole she had dug was now exposed.
She hurried over, crouched at the hole and peered down to see a grey, fluff-covered wild rabbit squatting inside.
With her catch secured, Nanzhi was not pretentious and reached down to scoop it up, grabbing the rabbit by the ears and pulling it straight out of the hole.
Shen Zhiyu, who was clever, saw his mother catch a rabbit and hurriedly pulled out a rope from the basket to hand over to her.
"Mom, the rabbit!"
"Tonight, Mom will make rabbit meat for you to eat!" As Nanzhi spoke, she used the hemp rope to tie up the wild rabbit securely.
As she watched the rabbit kicking its legs nonstop, Nanzhi smiled so wide her eyes disappeared. This rabbit weighed at least four pounds and would make enough food for two or three meals!
Seeing that the hole can be used again, Nanzhi gathered some grass and leaves to cover it up, placed a piece of sweet potato on top before standing up to go check other places.
The rabbit in the basket, finding its struggles futile, eventually closed its eyes and pretended to be dead, which kept Shen Zhiyu following behind Nanzhi laughing endlessly.
