Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 298: 20 Taels of Snowflake Silver
Chapter 298: Chapter 298: 20 Taels of Snowflake Silver
"Really? Are you sure you haven’t been scammed? No young lady would want a man like Xu Chou." Xu Changsheng said mockingly. Who could ever think highly of Xu Chou, with his horrifying appearance?
"How can you say that..." Wang Jinlan retorted, but inside she started to have doubts. Could this really be a scam?
But those two young ladies appeared to be pretty and were dressed up quite expensively...
"No young lady would ever ride in a mule cart." Xu Changsheng smirked at his wife, finding the whole situation amusing.
"Yeah! Don’t city girls always ride in carriages? I heard those two girls calling Xu Chou ’uncle’! What are we going to do, dear?" Wang Jinlan no longer cared about pretending to be calm and couldn’t help but worry she had been deceived.
How could she be so clueless!
"If they said they were coming, then let them come. If things go wrong, we can just get some silver from them. What’s there to lose? Even if they’re frauds, how will they escape from this village? Plus, Yannian from Xu’s family is back today, right? He works at the county office; we can call him over if things go wrong." Xu Changsheng concluded.
Wang Jinlan slapped her thigh, nodded, and went back to preparing the old hen in her hands.
Even if they were frauds, they would have to leave something behind before they could leave!
At Xu Chou’s house, Shen Miaomiao couldn’t quite understand Nanzhi’s intentions.
"Sister Nanzhi, do we really have to go to Wang Jinhua’s house for dinner?" The young girl asked, scratching her head in confusion.
That woman was no easy person to deal with. Just from hearing what she said when they entered the village, she likely held a grudge against Uncle Xu. But why did Sister Nanzhi insist on going to her house for dinner?
"Aren’t you guys hungry?" Nanzhi looked at them and chuckled, eventually fixing her gaze on Xu Chou’s face.
"Uncle Xu, do you have any objections to my decision?"
"No."
"Then let’s go visit her house later." Nanzhi nodded in satisfaction.
Wang Jinlan felt reassured by Xu Changsheng’s words. She cooked half the chicken in a soup and half with potatoes. She also cooked a few solid meat dishes with the two jin of meat her daughter-in-law bought.
When Xu Chou came knocking with Nanzhi, there were already some people trailing behind them, some even carrying their own bowls, eager to join the excitement.
Xu Changsheng’s family only consisted of one son. His daughter-in-law had given birth to two daughters and a son, so they didn’t have many family members.
Upon seeing Xu Chou and his group approaching, the three children became slightly nervous and hid behind their parents.
Wang Jinlan welcomed them with a broad smile, "Please come in, young ladies, Brother... Brother Xu."
Wang Jinlan spoke the words ’Brother Xu’ in an extremely unnatural manner, making Xu Chou tremble slightly inside.
"Thank you, aunty." Nanzhi was not overly courteous, following Wang Jinlan inside and taking a seat.
Nanzhi took a seat, and the others had no reason to keep standing around, so they all sat down as well.
At that moment, Wang Jinlan, who now sat close, gave a careful look at Nanzhi’s and Shen Miaomiao’s clothes and accessories.
The clothes, although not top-notch, must be worth at least a tael of silver each. Moreover, the silver hairpins should be at least several taels of silver.
She couldn’t pass up this chance. Throughout the meal, she didn’t stop maneuvering her chopsticks, she even prepared a pair of public chopsticks, worried that Nanzhi and Shen Miaomiao would dislike using the same ones as her.
Seeing her brandishing the public chopsticks, offering her food, Nanzhi was taken aback for a moment.
She hadn’t expected Wang Jinlan to be so thoughtful.
Xu Changsheng’s son was quite stolid, not speaking a word throughout dinner and not caring about his child at all.
Madam Xu was so busy feeding their youngest son that she hardly ate anything herself. Their eldest daughter, Zhaodi, saw that her younger brother wanted to eat the chicken. Just as she was about to grab a piece, however, Wang Jinlan smacked her hand with chopsticks.
Xu Zhaodi was only ten years old and quite skinny. Her hands were even more devoid of any flesh, so the spot where the chopsticks hit her quickly swelled up into a red bump.
Nonetheless, she dared not cry out loud, only carefully withdrawing her hand and silently shedding tears while nursing her sore spot.
Nanzhi and her party witnessed this and had mixed feelings. Seeing their displeasure, Wang Jinlan hastened to explain, "The child doesn’t know any better, she really doesn’t."
"If the child is hungry, let her eat," Nanzhi spoke lightly. Wang Jinlan hesitated, then quickly picked up some chicken meat with chopsticks for her grandchildren.
"What the young lady says is right," Wang Jinlan agreed, seeking their approval with a smile, before finally asking, "By the way, how do you find our wine?"
Wang Jinlan had served several cups of wine at their places early on.
As they were nearly done eating, it was about time to discuss the main business at hand.
"We’ll have to ask Uncle Xu about that." Nanzhi responded with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
Wang Jinlan had not anticipated this and was momentarily flabbergasted.
Xu Chou also seemed slightly confused, as if he was beginning to understand something.
His visit to Xu Changsheng’s family wasn’t merely to buy wine or for the sake of having a meal, but to seek revenge.
"We always let Uncle Xu taste any wine we intend to buy. The price of good wine is naturally higher, ranging from a few taels of silver to several tens. I just wonder, what is the quality of your family’s wine?
Upon hearing this, both Wang Jinlan and Xu Changsheng’s complexions changed, as if they had swallowed flies.
They knew something about Xu Chou right enough, they had always thought that he would never amount to much. Who would have thought that now they would need him to finalize their business deals?
"Brother Xu, all these past misunderstandings... well, they were just misunderstandings," Wang Jinlan could only muster a whisper, hoping that Xu Chou would forgive them.
Xu Chou had taken a sip of wine by now, but remained silent.
On her end, Nanzhi placed a purse on the table, revealing silver ingots and some copper coins inside.
"If your family’s wine is good, then consider this twenty taels as a deposit."
Caught between a past tormentor in Xu Chou and a prospect of shiny silver, Wang Jinlan felt as though a thunderbolt had ripped open the sky above her, leaving her on the brink of blacking out.
"Master," Xu Chou finally broke his silence.
Even Xu Changsheng, who had initially been incredulous about the whole business, was now on tenterhooks.
Perhaps if he hadn’t seen the silver, the matter wouldn’t have been so important.
But having laid eyes on the twenty taels, who could bear to give it up?
"Xu Chou, what happened before was our fault. We shouldn’t have treated you and your mother that way. Let’s discuss this properly," Xu Changsheng’s voice was starting to crack. That twenty taels of silver amounted to what their family could earn in two years!
"The wine from Xu Changsheng’s family isn’t good. It tastes tannic," Xu Chou stated bluntly, his gaze indifferent.
Nanzhi looked disappointed and sighed, "Aunt, it’s a pity that we can’t take your family’s wine, but since we ate your food, we should pay for the meal. Here is two hundred wen copper coins for the meal."
She took out two hundred wen copper coins from her purse and placed them on the table. As for the twenty taels of silver ingots, she packed them back into the purse and handed it to Xu Chou.
Watching as the dazzling twenty taels of silver slipped away, Wang Jinlan’s eyes turned red.
"Xu Chou, this is nothing but personal revenge!"
