As it was almost lunchtime, the rest of the women returned home to cook, leaving only the idle ones still hanging around outside the courtyard. Once home, Wang Jinlan bit the bullet, killed her old hen and sent her daughter-in-law to buy pork.

Her grandchildren drooled as they watched their grandma pluck the chicken and crouched to the side, waiting.

"Grandma, is it New Year’s today?" The three-year-old grandchild drooled looking at the chicken in the basin.

Wang Jinlan slapped him with her hand and scolded, "You little rascal, go play somewhere else and don’t hinder your grandma from making money!"

The child wailed in pain from the slap, and his older sisters, worried that their little brother would upset grandma again, quickly took him away.

Xu Changsheng, the village head of Niuniu Village, returned to see his wife killing a chicken in the courtyard and was taken aback.

"We aren’t celebrating anything today, why are you killing a chicken?" Xu Changsheng asked as he placed his tools by the yard gate.
