Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 296: Good Wine
Chapter 296: Chapter 296: Good Wine
Watching the mule cart approach the village, Old Sixth Xu was worried about losing a sure bet and was too distracted to continue working. He rushed towards the village without a second thought.
Xu Chou had initially planned to have Aze drive the mule cart straight to his house. However, he was blocked by villagers who heard the commotion.
The leader was none other than Wang Jinlan, the wife of the village chief of Niuniu Village.
She had always despised the Xu family. At first, it was because she resented the fine wine Xu Chou’s mother sold, which took business away from her own family. When she stopped selling wine, Wang Jinlan even brought over some items to ask for their wine recipe.
She began her request politely, suggesting that if the Xu family would pass on the recipe for their wine, her family would support them in their old age.
However, the unyielding old woman not only refused but also threw out all the items Wang had brought to her.
When Xu Chou’s mother died last month, Wang planned to wait until the body was discarded before searching the yard for the elusive wine recipe.
Instead, not only did Xu Chou return home, but he also brought people back to hold a proper funeral for the old woman. Wang heard that the coffin alone cost two taels of silver.
Now that Xu Chou had returned again, wearing the same homespun clothing as before, she gritted her teeth and asked, "What are you doing back in the village, Xu Chou?"
Xu Chou, in a departure from his usual timid behavior, merely looked at Wang Jinlan coldly.
He knew Wang was also rotten to the core. In their childhood, Wang used to benefit from the white buns his mother, who had a thriving business selling wine, made for him. They became friends simply because she did not call him Goblin like others did. But in the end, she was just wearing a mask.
"I’ve returned to my own home, what does it have to do with you?"
Aze and Lin Xiaoquan, who were standing to the side, found Wang Jinlan’s behavior perplexing.
"Your mother is dead, why have you returned?" Wang Jinlan’s sharp words cut to the core.
"The house and the courtyard belonged to my mother and was left to me. Don’t I have the right to return?" Xu Chou retorted, staring at Wang Jinlan’s haggard, aged face with a trace of anger.
He had originally planned to invite his new friends to his house to take a look at the wine.
But now things have changed.
"Your family isn’t from here. It’s already generous that we let you live here for so long. It might be better if you leave now."
Wang Jinlan, now a grandmother, was not someone Xu Chou could outtalk.
Just as it seemed Xu Chou was losing the argument, Lin Xiaoquan and Aze wanted to help but were unsure what to say.
Nanzhi then peered out from the mule cart, "Uncle Xu, what’s going on?"
At the sound of Nanzhi’s voice, the people surrounding the cart turned their heads to look at her.
Nanzhi was only eighteen and had aged beautifully due to her comfortable lifestyle. She appeared as a lovely girl, with her radiant looks turning heads.
Even Wang Jinlan was taken aback for a moment.
She had thought Xu Chou was bringing someone to help move things, not expecting such a pretty girl to be in the cart. Based on her looks, Wang guessed that Nanzhi must be the daughter of a wealthy family from Yan City.
"Master, someone is blocking our way," Xu Chou responded, casting a glance at Wang Jinlan and snorting coldly.
Aze was about to crack his whip when the surrounding villagers quickly dispersed.
Xu Chou led the group straight to his house’s courtyard, passing by the gawking villagers.
Once he opened the courtyard door, he ushered Nanzhi and others inside.
Crowds gathered outside, drawn by the spectacle, curious about what drama might unfold.
"Uncle Xu, this is your courtyard?" Shen Miaomiao was the first to jump off the mule cart, looking around curiously.
The sight of Shen Miaomiao and Nanzhi getting off the cart caused a flurry of comments among the spectating young men. Aze frowned at the commotion.
These people were truly annoying.
"Master, my mother used to be a wine seller. We stopped selling due to my circumstance, but there should still be some wine left in our cellar," Xu Chou spoke nervously, carefully observing Nanzhi’s reaction.
There was no expected response, only Nanzhi and Shen Miaomiao gazing around.
"Master?"
"Um, could you please show us the cellar?" With Nanzhi’s urging, Shen Miaomiao turned her attention to the possibilities before her.
After all, they were on the lookout for a consistent wine supplier. Even though Xu Chou mentioned the remaining wine, they were unsure of the quantity. But how much can a cellar hold?
All doubts disappeared once Nanzhi saw the neatly arranged large jars of wine in the cellar.
Just one of these jars could potentially supply their restaurant, Sanwei Residence, for over a month, right?
Not only was Nanzhi surprised, but Shen Miaomiao and Aze were also nearly stunned. Lin Xiaoquan was particularly shocked, and circled around the jars.
"These wines must have been aged for quite some time, right?" said Aze. He looked at the paper-sealed jars with a complex expression.
"Those jars were brewed by my mother twenty years ago," Xu Chou said, his eyes filled with affection as he looked at the wine jars.
It was because of him that his mother had toiled her entire life.
"What about this one?" Lin Xiaoquan ran to a corner and pointed at a smaller jar.
Seeing where he was pointing, Xu Chou hesitated before saying, "That one was brewed by my father forty-three years ago."
Realizing he’d made a mistake, Lin Xiaoquan stopped poking around and rubbed his nose sheepishly.
"Master, please taste the wine," said Xu Chou as he opened one of the jars. The rich aroma of wine instantly filled the room, causing them to feel slightly tipsy even before they took a sip.
Nanzhi and Shen Miaomiao looked at each other, both understanding that they had found a fine wine. But it was perhaps too fine.
The age worth of this wine was extensive. Not daring to drink much, Nanzhi only tasted a drop.
The robust aroma of the wine nearly made Nanzhi choke. The taste was sophisticated and aromatic. Perhaps due to the small quantity, she did not taste any spiciness.
Even though she had only tasted a drop, both Nanzhi and Shen Miaomiao were slightly flushed. They gazed at the people in the cellar, feeling a bit fuzzy-headed.
Eventually, Xu Chou came to their assistance by serving them a bowl of water. Drinking it down, Nanzhi slowly regained clarity, then turned an inquisitive gaze toward Xu Chou.
Under such scrutiny, Xu Chou became troubled and nervous. The room became so quiet that one could hear the sound of a needle dropping.
"Master—"
"Uncle Xu, how much are you selling this wine for? Name your price," Nanzhi interjected. Even though she was no wine expert, she knew this was an extremely good wine. In all of Yan City, finding a second source of this kind of wine would be near impossible!
"Master..." Xu Chou was overwhelmed and for a while, and he managed to stutter out only two words.
"This wine is exceptional. I won’t beat around the bush. I’ll give you a hundred taels for one jar, how about it?"
One of these large jars could hold the equivalent of ten small jars. The wine she had purchased from the Liao Family was priced at two taels per jar. Not to mention the fact that this wine was both fantastic and aged, ten taels per jar was actually a bargain for her.
