Chapter 75: Fish out of water.
Chapter 75: Fish out of water.
At the city lake.
Purple sighed and relaxed into the lake comfortably. They hadn’t expected the place to be like this but it was beautiful and cool. Not many beastmen used this lake granting them the chance to enjoy this temporary habitat for a while.
A small group had gathered a little further away talking excitedly about Sydney. She was too beautiful to be unseen! Their minds just couldn’t keep her out. "She’s really beautiful!" one said excitedly as a blush crept up his face.
If she was the one that came to our islands, she surely would have gotten alot of attention from many mermen."
True indeed. I wonder if she’s taking in any more males!" he exclaimed hoping for an answer to fall from the sky.
While we are in that topic..it seems she can to this place before her brother. My only question is why hasn’t she mates with any of them?!"
That’s weird..." one muttered.
Why are fishlings like you talking about females?" Purple who was swimming by came to a halt and resurfaced into the water top with sternly questioned the mermen. If even a male like myself hasn’t gotten a female what makes you think you qualify to even think about it." Purple spoke as he sized the small group up and down.
Based on the fact that mermen can only mate if there was a female born during their time.
"We were only talking!" one of the mermen defended.
Purple nodded the slight hostility on his face vanishing. They had come here for Scott and he did not expect for his sister to be this pretty. She also hadn’t mated with those land beastmen...he really wanted to ask her if she could permit him to pursue her. He immediately left the lake and went back into the city. He’d loose nothing if he tried and with that in mind, he confidently made his way to Sydney’s home with a lot of familiarity.
Scott had gone off to have a word with Titan who asked for him leaving her to herself. She wasn’t entirely on her own since she was under the keen watch of Caden inside the house parameters.
The silence didn’t last for long after Scott left. A hum sound reached Sydney’s ears drawing her to look over to the source. A purple head popped up from behind the huge wall fence with a big smile which made his pale white face flush a little. He seemed to be in a good mood.
Sydney remembered this merman, he stood out alot from the others and she didn’t expect him to be the kind of a bubbly person. He was extremely beautiful. He brazenly jumped over the fence with a silly smile landing steadily in his two feet and rushed over to hide under the tree shade that was close to the swing she was playing at. He immediately turned his legs into his tail and lay on the ground to finally relax.
Since they hadn’t been accustomed to navigating on land, their feet which were rarely used remained a little wobbly even after training for the whole time they had left the ocean.
His sudden transformation caught Sydney off guard as she admired his big beautiful tail that charmed her helplessly
"Do you admire me, female?" he asked as he swayed his tail making the lights that were sneaking into the shade fall on them causing them to glitter ever so enchantingly.
"Should I?" Sydney asked with a twisted face hearing his question. She wouldn’t deny, he had a beautiful glimmer to him but why was his expression like he had worn the lottery? It was irritating to look at.
I’m glad you do.." he smiled softly and scooted over then scanned her swing. It seemed like it was fun, he noted and followed her actions with his curious eyes for a few seconds.
"Your tail is beautiful..." she praised his tail honestly.
Purple smiled happily. It hadn’t been difficult to charm her, now all he had to do was ask her for permission to pursue her.
While we are on that..what are you doing here? Scott is a little busy right now." Sydney said diverting her gaze from the fish tail.
I’m not here to see him. I’m here for you." he said and diverted his attention from the swing to her.
Me?" Sydney was skeptic. She didn’t recall ever having anything to do with the mermen people.
Caden couldn’t stand the fact that male had just trespassed into their territory and was also being brazen enough to court their female. He rushed out of. the house and found the merman scooting closer to Sydney.
"... A request you say.... then you’ll have to give something in return inorder to have your request fulfil. Was what Caden and the others heard once they were close not only shocking Ash, Caden, ken and Shawn too but she was over from done. "Can I have a scale from you...they are beautiful and glittery." she said with her lips pressed tight.
Caden looked at the duo’s interaction from the house entrance and felt the urge to pluck all his feathers off his body and offer them to her so she wouldn’t ask the merman for his scales. Despite his calm disposition, he worried for his position as Sydney’s male and while it wasn’t yet official, anything could happen from her rejecting him to being attacked or killed. This happened under extreme circumstances and this was one of those extreme times.
They are very sharp and could hurt you." he said softly with a warm smile and watched as her smile fell. She was the first female to ask for his fish scale but there was something better.
Caden sighed with delight. ’Haha...back of fish!!’ he almost said so but was cut short. "I can give you something better and not harmful...do you still want it?" he asked. Who was he to refuse to give her his scale?! It was his honour but he ought to grant her something better.
"What would it be?" Sydney asked carefully. It was after all an exchange for a request she hadn’t yet heard
"It depends...should we try?" Purple asked with a smile as he easily dragged his fish tail that seemed to weigh tonnes over to her side.
"Don’t take anything he give you, Sydney..." Caden interrupted them. "It’ll mean you wish to take him in!" he warned. Caden didn’t know he’d grow this obsessed even before mating with her, he was usually a calm person but that wasn’t the case anymore...he wasn’t yet mated with her and there was also a possible likelihood of leaving only one male for her.
"I’m also against it" Ash intervened. He also didn’t want Sydney to get another male.
Purple hair who had been interrupted frowned angrily. "I’m here for your Female..your opinions don’t matter!" he gritted through his teeth.
"Equally, Sydney is our female and if you think we can’t see through the silly ideas in your fish head...then...." Ken scoffed and shook his head in sheer disdain.
"Can you guys please not fight?!" she looked at Ken reprimandingly then looked at Purple. "You no longer need to give me your scale. What do you want?" she asked.
"I’m here to seek permission to pursue you. I admire you alot and wish to become your male." Purple expressed the reason for his visit fearlessly.
Ken and the others knew the reason for his visit but damn...this fish was extremely arrogant! To think he would dare say something like that in their presence!! He was foolishly brave for a fish out of water.
While the scale on land at which females were coveted, the rate was thrice in the sea. The ratio of female to males on land was 1:15, the ratio under the sea was 1:100. The number of mermen born in a single birth was around a thousand and those that survived through adulthood were ninety percent of the general birth rate. Also the number of females were lesser in the sea which forced the Merking to draft laws where only the strongest and most outstanding mermen got the chance to mate.
To be considered outstanding, one had to be of eighth rank and above!
Now for Purple who had met a land female who was this pretty, if she could taken in even disabled land males, it meant she wasn’t picky and he wouldn’t have to wait to rank up to become her male. If he could be the first to mate with her, he could convence her to move to the sea for him as surviving on land would he a little tough for him.
"For what reason do you wish to pursue me?" Sydney who wasn’t surprised asked dryly. The question came suddenly catching Purple off guard. "What? I don’t think it’s love...you haven’t known me well enough to claim so....is it impulse?" she asked.
"That ...." Purple swallowed what he had wanted to say. Being honest with her would not yeild him what he desired and lying would only make her angry.
"Half of the city of beasts wants Sydney for themselves but it’s not half of the city in this place. While your intentions are selfish..."
"Like you aren’t being selfish!" Purple frowned at Ken’s nosy self. Who were they to judge him anyway? What male didn’t approach a female with selfish intentions.
"No one in this house is selfish...had it been the case, Ash a city lord and Titan a snake beastman qualified to be a lord wouldn’t be sharing this house." Ken smirked at the merman’s stupid self. "Hear me Sydney, all mermen have not gotten females from ashore for hundreds of years now."
