Chapter 145: The spirit forest

Chapter 145: The spirit forest

Titan looked around the cave which was more of open. Yes he had chosen not to accept his heritage but that didn’t stop his shifting. But he couldn’t do that here!

He bore with the endless pain and slithered out of the cave and when he was out in the open, he hissed trying to figure out his position but his summon was unexpectedly not answered. He hissed out one more time this time more intensely but even after waiting for a while, no snake came slithering his way.

He let out his tongue trying to sense if this place didn’t have any snakes and to his appallment, there were hundred of snakes in the vicinity.

Did he just get underlooked!? He was never one to rely on his power to boss his kind around. But earlier when he hissed, he was politely asking!

He was a king of snakes, alright!? What was this behaviour?!

He slithered from the cave and went to ask around for directions?

Titan didn’t look far when he ran into a red spotted snake. It wasn’t particularly big and was considered a medium sized one.

He hissed. [ Excuse me....may I please ask you a few questions?!]

The snake looked at Titan with bewildered eyes. "Who are you hissing at like that!? I can talk!" The red spotted snake was offended.

Huh?!" Titan was speechless! How can you speak like.."

"Like what!? Don’t go around assuming things! You may end up offending the big guys! And besides, who are you?! This is my first time seeing you around here!"

"I accidentally came here." Titan held back from making a silly expression and explained.

That’s like it! Anyway, this is the spirit forest, a territory of spirit beasts. You are lucky you ended up here than any other place or else you’d be as good as dead!" The snake ranted on and on. "The likes of you get damped here from time to time. But you are more appealing so I’ll help you blend in well!" The red spotted snake boasted.

So tell me, where are you from?" He asked inquisitively.

Beast City!" Titan answered honestly. Spirit forest and spirit beasts were all new terminologies to him and this told him just far away from home he was.

Beast City???? Jezusss!! Are you a beastman!?" The red spotted snake jumped up with wide eyes staring at Titan with hostility.

"Hey!!! Call down!! I said I came here accidentally but hold no intention to harm you!"

Tch! No intention to harm!?" The red spotted snake refused to believe Titan at all! "All beastmen are the same! They think highly of themselves and look down on spirit beasts! Besides, if others know I’m hanging out with a beastman, they’ll shun me!" The red spotted snake was in a bad mood already.

I can stop myself from transforming into a beastman. Will that be okay!?" Titan asked. He didn’t really need to rely on a little snake but some form of guidance would be good!

When the others aren’t around, you can talk to me. But once we meet other Spirit beasts, I don’t know you, you don’t know me. Is that clear!?" The red dotted snake compromised. He had seen many beasts who go thrown into the spirit forest die gruesome deaths and beastmen were in a whole different level!

"Crystal clear." Titan had no choice but to dance to the red spotted snake’s rythm.

Huh... crystals! Where?" The red spotted snake looked around excitedly.

Titan dreaded his coming days. He had pain to endure and he was going to hang out with this small guy! Once he got a hang of things around here, he’d part way with him.

Sydney had been anxious for a few days as they hurried on their journey to look for Titan. They had been going on for days upon days, hardly resting.

Caden gete.down! Let’s rest!" She tapped on his feathery back and he descended immediately. The others had been trying to catch up from below but there was a difference in obstacles between the sky and ground.

Caden’s sharp eyes scanned a safer vicinity and circled thwo tes before he found a place to land.

Lately, the areas they went by had far more dangers than before. Before they considered Sydney riding on Caden’s back, they had run into some really strong animals that even gave Ash and Ray a strain and now they had been extra careful!

Once Caden landed, Sydney got off his back and looked around the area. The others hadn’t caught up yet and so she and Caden chose to work on their camping area.

Sydney looked at the tall grass and thought of a shade. She got out her stone blade and begun cutting it while setting it aside. It had gotten hotter as the weeks flew by.

Caden wasn’t far and he was gathering branches that they’d use to establish the shade and fire wood.

By the time Ash and the others found them, cooked meat, water and a perfectly established shade enough for all of them was in place.

Sydney was sitting on a stone nibbling on a piece of jerky in thought but once the others arrived, she hurried up to welcome them.

You came!" She said and held both Titan and Ken’s hands before dragging them over to sit and eat. She rushed back and dragged Ray and Shawn in as well!.

They sat down confused at her sudden change and no one dared to catch a single thing to eat.

Sydney looked around and saw Caden still gather more firewood. "Caden...come here! We will gather more after you have rested." She gestured for him to come over.

Caden awkwardly placed down the branches he was holding and came over to the shade. Once everyone was seated, Sydney had a better chance to look at them well after many many days.

She chocked! They looked haggard! Dark circles were prominent on their faces and they had tanned by alot! Her heart felt a sharp stab of pain full of guilt! What was she doing? How could she be so blind not to see!?

You guys eat." She spoke softly.

Are you alright?" Ray was the first to ask.

I’m fine. You guys should eat...come on. I cooked them." She pointed at the stone slab that served as a table.

We will finish it as soon as possible and set off again! Don’t worry okay!?" Ash assured as he caught his share of food to eat as soon as possible.

No." She shook her head and lowered her face to avoid facing them. "We won’t be setting off any time soon." If this went on, while she was clamouring to save Titan, she’d end up loosing the rest of her mates!

Why..what do you mean? Are moving too slowly!? We can go faster!!" Ken added. We are worried you might get tired...."

Stop!" She yelled unable to bare the guilt that kept stabbing at her. "I said we are resting for a few days! Stop worrying about me! Just...just rest for a while alright?" Her voice dropped.

We...."

I’m sorry..I didn’t mean to raise my voice on you." She said and stood up from where she was seated avoiding their gazes. "Eat!" She stepped away but not going too far to avoid worrying them. She took out the beast repellant herbs she had gathered and scattered them around their perimeter. This would act as their first line of defense.

Now, they were confused and worried. But they did what was asked of them. Each ate and ate till their human bellies were round and hard.

As Sydney was busy, she felt someone tap on her shoulder and on turning, Ken was standing there looking at her with his haggard face full of obedience. "I ate it all! See my stomach is round." He said and slid aside his skin hide to show his small pot belly.

Sydney who had been drowned in worry looked down at his stomach. "pffftt..." She laughed. Before she could gather her bearing, she saw all the others walking over their intentions clear on their faces.

You are not going to show me your bellies are you? Hahahaha!!!!" She couldn’t help laughing.

Their intentions exposed, Ray, Caden and Ash blushed furiously.

Ken that shameless guy! He had suggested to do this so that Sydney wouldn’t be mad at them only to end up embarrassing themselves.

Sydney laughed till she slamped on the ground. You...what! Hahahaha!!! I’m sorry...just you are too funny!" She wheezed. This must have been Ken’s idea, right!" She pointed out and Ken could only cover his belly with a smile.

His agenda had been fulfilled. She wasn’t gloomy anymore and the atmosphere was much warmer.

Despite being annoyed with Ken’s idea, seeing theirate laugh so freely to point of having tears in her eyes made them feel warm inside. She worried for Titan and they could understand that but she had ignored them alot. They didn’t feel good about it but could not complain either.

After that silly episode, Sydney and them went to the shade to rest.

Three days later.

That beast repellant herb is really something! Tsk tsk tsk..." Ken couldn’t help commenting.
