Chapter 219: Her home
’Rustle’
Xavier who was enjoying Lyra’s soft fingers between his fur jolted in his place before standing on fours. Then he narrowed his gaze at a particular spot as his ears perked up trying to catch on even the smallest movements.
Meanwhile, Lyra was surprised due to his sudden actions and got up from the ground while dusting off the dust that might have gotten on her clothes.
"Your majesty?" before she could say more, Xavier’s teeth tugged on her skirt bringing her behind him. He took a protective stance in front of her and bared his fangs. This made even Lyra worried. She looked in a certain direction following his line of sight and before she could concentrate on what was happening, the danger stood facing them.
A pack of grey wolves stepped out of the bushes before snarling at them. Showing off their large canine teeth, the wolves started to take a threatening step toward them.
Lyra’s breath hitched due to dread. She hoped for the wolves to be beastman....or else, they were done today.
But Lyra’s wishful hope turned futile because Xavier recognized the wolves as soon as he caught sight of them. ’Wild wolves’ were ordinary grey wolves that dwelled in the forest. It was not that difficult for him to subdue them but the problem here was keeping this pretty female safe while he fought. Even if he used his powers, facing a pack of well-versed wolves alone was disadvantageous on his side. The forest that they were currently in was unfamiliar to Xavier whereas, for the wolves, this was where they lived. He had never navigated here before much less fight.
So he chose the next best option he could think about. Using his powers, he created an ice barrier separating themselves from the wolves before he turned to Lyra. Knowing well about her lack of understanding, he forcefully yanked her over his back by holding her skirt between his teeth.
"Ah!" Lyra yelped in surprise and felt him starting to move forward. She barely managed to steady herself by holding on to his neck for her dear life as he sprinted along the forest.
’Howl...’ she slightly heard the distinctive howls of wolves that soon got lost in the sound of the passing breeze. Her eyelids gingerly covered her eyes trying to limit the mud and dust from falling into them.
After hours and hours of running did Xavier stop. He scanned the vicinity surrounding them for any possible threats before lowering himself to the ground.
Lyra parted her closed eyes when she felt him stop. Then she hurriedly held her skirt up before getting down from him. After steadying herself, she glanced around her and found a familiar place in her sight. Huge stone walls surrounding the beast city could be found not far from where she stood. She sighed in relief after finally reaching her destination, ’’Thank you....’’ heartfelt gratitude left her mouth as she glanced at King Xavier.
Xavier shifted back into his beastman form and curtly said, ’’Keep that ’Thank you’ to yourself, I don’t want that’’
’’Uh?’’ Lyra questioned wide-eyed as she looked at him in confusion. And before she could ask further, a familiar voice caught her attention.
’’Sunshine?’’ the voice was filled with despair and a bit of disbelief. Demir had to take a second look just to make sure that he was not dreaming at that moment. He took unsteady steps forward trying to reach her. But he did less work as of now because he barely walked before he was hugged by the one he was yearning for. He felt her hands encircling his neck as she leaned forward and put her entire self on him.
’’Oh, Demir....’’ her relief-filled voice reached his ears and that was all it took for him to hug her back. He encircled his arms around her waist before gently picking her up from the ground. He nuzzled his nose in the crook of her neck while inhaling her addictive and familiar fragrance.
On the other side, Xavier was looking at the interaction between them with his eyes narrowed. A sardonic smirk formed on the corner of his lips. The one to bring her here from the forest was him but the one she was currently hugging was someone that had failed to protect her. It was not like he was asking for a hug or anything. Not at all! It was just that he wanted to receive fair compensation for the work he had done, ’’You!’’
The two lovebirds pulled away when they heard a loud voice. With one of his arms still around her waist, Demir stared at Xavier with a frown on his face, ’’Fox king?’’
But the said fox king completely ignored the scorpion beastman’s presence and turned towards Lyra, "After your disappearance, your eccentric mates turned my tribe upside down" he briefly glared at Demir before adding, "And I expect you to pay for all the damages that have occurred"
Lyra’s face paled as soon as he finished his words. She frowningly glanced up at Demir, "Did you guys fight?" she received a nod for that and couldn’t help but say, "And did fighting with each other helped you in finding me?"
Demir skulkingly shook his head and Lyra sighed and asked, "Are you hurt somewhere?"
"No" but Kyrell is. He stopped himself from telling everything that had transpired. He decided to tell it after going back to their home.
Then the next thing he did was face Xavier as the prince of the scorpion tribe, "I will pay for whatever damages that have been inflicted on your tribe"
"That is what all I need" Xavier curtly said before he shifted into his beast form and sprinted towards the beast city’s entrance. He ran with all his might and tried his hardest to not look back. He ignored his heart as it painfully clenched. It felt like he had abandoned something very precious behind him.
Meanwhile, Demir too entered the city with Lyra in his arms.
"I can walk! Put me down" she protested but he was unrelenting.
"You are barefooted" he was trying his best to ignore seeing the visible scabs and wounds on her soles. By this, he was once again reminded of his failure in protecting his beloved, "I’m sorry, my sunshine"
Lyra pursed her lips hearing a tremor in his voice.
"You did nothing wrong", she said as she buried her face in his chest. His steady beating heart and warmth made her feel safe. She felt like she was finally home. ’Her home’
