Chapter 168: Spirit wings
Chapter 168: Spirit wings
Darcio was informed by the guard to leave for the rose castle as soon as possible. He was very much confused by the sudden necessity for his master to urge him to this extent.
He knew his master well. Demir never really cared about things unless they regarded his female. Darcio suddenly felt nervous thinking that something might have happened to the lady until he reached his destination.
Darcio didn’t know whether to breathe a relief or to hold his forehead. His guess was fortunately wrong and his master’s female was fine. But the crisis he faced right now was not something simple. The little lion cubs that he sometimes saw were lying on the bed taking in feeble breaths.
Their tiny lips were ghastly pale and bluish on the edges. ’Poisoning’ Darcio was able to guess that much as soon as he caught a glimpse of the cubs’ faces. He furrowed his brows hearing about the said poisoning incident.
His master once mentioned it in passing saying how his female was kidnapped by the eagle king and her fetus was in danger due to consuming poison in the same banquet. From what Darcio knew, that work was done by one of the lady’s mother’s admirers. It was unfortunate but he was relieved back then knowing that they were able to get hold of the antidote at the right time but now...what was this?
Demir who never made mistakes regarding poison and antidotes was right now fretting about mistaking the dosage of antidote that Gregory gave them. And that had resulted in the cubs falling ill. Darcio never blamed his master but now he couldn’t help it. Demir should have been careful.
He saw as his master made his way toward Lyra with his head lowered.
"I’m sorry sunshine" Demir kneeled in front of her not caring about lowering his pride in the room filled with other males that loved the same female that he adored.
Lyra’s tear-filled eyes wavered due to his actions, "Demir....stand up"
Demir held her hand on his shoulder and shook his head, "This is my fault. I should have checked the antidote properly"
Lyra hugged him gently and buried her face in his chest. She was not able to say that it was ’Fine’ because it was not fine. Her babies were suffering and her heart ached every time she saw them. Tears streamed down her face and she continued to sob while holding Demir.
Demir caressed her head and said, "Please don’t cry sunshine. I will figure something out"
She raised her head to gaze at him, "Really?" Her voice broke as she added, "Will the babies be fine...?"
He nodded, "I promise" then he glanced at Darcio, "Check their condition"
The latter gave a nod before walking toward the bed. He closed his eyes while putting all of his concentration on examining the cubs. Just a few moments later, his forehead creased, and his eyes were filled with a complicated gaze.
"What is it?" Lyra inquired more like begged for him to say that everything was fine. She wanted Darcio to say that her babies were alright. To say that they are just sleeping and would soon wake up but her desperate wishes didn’t come true.
Darcio looked at her in pity and parted his lips, "The poison has completely occupied their bodies" he took a deep breath before adding, "It is just a matter of time for it to reach their hearts, and then....."
"No!" Lyra’s scream echoed inside the room interrupting his next words. She didn’t want him to continue anymore. Her vision suddenly turned blurry and her head throbbed. The last thing she saw was Demir’s anxious face before she succumbed to the darkness.
"Sunshine!" Demir held her tightly as she lost her consciousness in his arms.
"Sweet girl!" Victor who was standing silently rushed towards them. He pushed Demir from Lyra before pulling her towards him. Her body was burning with fever against his body. Hoisting her up, he walked out of the room and took her to his room before laying her on the bed.
Then he put a damp animal skin on her forehead and pressed on it. Victor gazed at her beautiful face and frowned. He never saw her in such a condition. Not when she came to this world that was unknown to her. Not when she was kidnapped by Kyrell and returned back or not even when the lion queen informed her about her complicated pregnancy. She was calm and composed going through all of that and for him to see such a strong person in this condition.....Victor’s heart clenched painfully in his chest.
He only ever wanted to see her happy face and dazzling smile. For her to always be safe and healthy but such simple things seemed almost impossible. One after another, there was always something going wrong that made her sad. Yes, Victor felt bad for those cubs but call him selfish for whatever but the only thing that mattered to him was his mate’s well-being. And if keeping those cubs alive was her path towards happiness then he owed to fulfill that no matter what.
He clenched his fists and got up from his place. Kissing her forehead, he left the room before going downstairs. He walked inside Noah’s room and glanced at Darcio, "How much time do they have left?"
"Pardon?" Darcio looked at him in confusion, "What do you mean by that, your majesty?"
"It’s just as you heard" Victor affirmed, "How much time until the poison reaches their heart? I’m going to get the spirit wings"
"Yes?" Darcio asked in surprise. He couldn’t believe his ears, "Spirit wings?"
"Time?" Victor snarled this time losing his patience.
Darcio flinched in his place and answered, "I can’t say the exact time but maybe until next sunrise"
’Next sunrise’ Victor pondered to himself. Now it was midnight and the next sunrise meant he has a day and a half. He cast a glance at Killian and asked, "Can you somehow stop the poison from reaching their hearts until I return?"
Killian frowned in thought but soon to his dismay shook his head, "I can’t" but his eyes lit up when he thought some more, "But someone who can wield ice power can do that. I have heard somewhere about a powerful beastman freezing the poison inside the body and buying time until attaining an antidote"
"That was Henrick" It was Theodore who said those words. He glanced at his mate and added, "He saved Iria once by doing that"
"But he is dead," Victor said regretfully.
"His Nephew can wield ice powers too," Theodore said surprising all of them, "I remember him mentioning training his Nephew’s powers in the past"
"Xavier can wield powers?" Lucas asked in disbelief and looked at Noah with inquiry in his eyes. Noah was the one that was acquainted with the prince of the fox tribe. Xavier was always ostracized by others his age because of his varied eye colors. Noah as a soft-hearted person he was tried to talk to Xavier in some gatherings. Lucas never had that chance or it was more like he didn’t care enough. Xavier and his personality clashed and Lucas decided to maintain his distance from the former.
On the other hand, Noah was surprised too. Xavier was never the one to reveal his personal life. No matter how much Noah tried, Xavier always drew the line when he didn’t like something. It was more like, He was somewhat scared about letting anyone near him.
"I’m hearing about it for the first time too" he answered Lucas before looking at Darcio, "Is it possible for us to halt the poison from reaching their hearts using ice power?"
Darcio’s eyes wavered with unknown emotions for a second but he erased that before nodding his head, "It is possible your highness"
Noah sighed in relief and got up from his place, "I will go get Xavier right now"
"Do that" Victor chimed in before making his way out of the room, "Then I will go get the spirit wings"
"Victor are you sure?" Killian’s voice made him halt. Victor turned towards him and Killian continued, "You do know about who you have to face to get that right?"
Victor smirked, "I have already killed him once. What can he even do now when he is just a spirit?"
Killian nodded, "Then leave soon"
"What.....?" Victor whined, "I thought you were worried about me just now"
"Dream on" Killian rolled his eyes.
Victor chuckled and turned toward Blake, "Take care of my sweet girl until I return, snake"
Blake looked at him with annoyance, "She was my Lilly before she became your sweet girl, you bastard"
"Yeah yeah," Victor mumbled before turning around.
"Don’t die" Victor smiled hearing Blake’s words and left the rose castle.
Noah left for the fox castle and Blake climbed the stairs to reach Lyra.
Lucas, Killian, and Demir were left inside the room to take care of the cubs.
