Beauty in the beast world
Chapter 167: Fever

Chapter 167: Fever

Darkness clouded the sky and night fell upon the beast world.

Noah woke up from his sleep when he heard feeble whimpers from his side. He turned to his side to only see his cubs’ anguish-filled faces.

He stretched his hand forward and touched their foreheads. Noah immediately panicked by their high temperature. Males were normally warm but the cubs’ temperature now was too much.

"Babies?" Noah scooped them into his arms and tried to wake them up but their eyes remained tightly closed. The only relieving thing was the rise and fall in their chest which indicated that they were still alive. Then he also noticed that once in a while they whimpered as though in some kind of pain.

Without wasting any more time, he tucked them back into the bed and went out of his room towards the second floor.

Killian wrinkled his brows and opened his eyes due to a knock on his room’s door. He glanced at his mate in his arms and carefully removed himself to not disturb her sleep. Stepping out of the bed, he strode towards the door and opened it.

"What?" He bluntly asked after seeing Noah but frowned noticing the latter’s panic-ridden face, "What happened?"

Noah took a deep breath and parted his lips, "The cubs are running a high fever. I didn’t know what to do so I came to ask my mate"

Killian sensed Noah’s distress. There was no way someone as calm as him would act like this for a simple fever but then again they were his children and Killian didn’t want to judge someone.

Then he turned to call Lyra but Noah beat him to it and entered his room.

Killian had a hard time fighting his urge from throwing Noah out of his room. He didn’t like other males entering his space. Beastmen were territorial, to begin with, and any infringement into their space was taken as a challenge. All of them staying in the same house was already a great deal but they endured it for their mate’s sake. And here he was enduring once again as he looked at Noah waking his mate from her sleep.

"Baby dove?"

Lyra groggily opened her eyes and the first thing she saw was Noah’s gentle face. Her face draped with a deep frown noticing his restlessness.

"What’s wrong Noah?" She said while getting up from the bed.

"The cubs....." Noah struggled to speak and Lyra held his hands.

"What happened to babies?" Lyra tried her best but her unease still leaked out of her words.

Noah helped her down from the bed and said while descending the stairs, "They have a fever" He realized that it was more than that but as he too didn’t know about their condition properly, he didn’t add any more than that.

Lyra frowned hearing his words, "Fever? Why all of a sudden?" They were well the last time she saw them. After that, her mind ran miles thinking about the reason for the fever. She couldn’t stop herself from thinking back to the black smoke created by that black wolf.

She anxiously made her way inside Noah’s room and stared at the cubs, "Babies...?"

As Noah said, they were running a fever...no this was not a normal fever. Lyra glanced at Noah feeling worried, "Is this even normal...? Noah something is wrong"

Noah sighed, "I’ll go get a witch doctor"

She nodded and gave him a gentle push, "Hurry...Go"

Lyra saw Noah rushing out of the room and she too got up from her place and went to the kitchen. She carried back a small stone bowl filled with water and a piece of animal skin.

Killian looked as his mate hurried inside and knelt on the ground beside the bed and started wiping the cubs with a damp cloth.

After some time Noah returned with a witch doctor from the Lion tribe. Killian also saw Noah’s father and mother following behind them with anxious faces.

"What’s wrong with my Grandsons!?" The lion king’s booming voice resounded inside the castle waking everyone up. He glared at the witch doctor, "What are you standing there for!? Go and examine them!"

The witch doctor flinched in his place and replied before walking towards the cubs, "Ye-yes your majesty"

Noah’s mother glimpsed at Lyra on the ground and went toward her, "You have not yet recovered, dear. So you shouldn’t sit on a cold floor" then she glared at her son and Killian for not taking care of her.

Killian went towards them and held Lyra, "Are you alright?"

"I’m fine" Lyra replied mindlessly while her eyes remained on the cubs. So what if she gets ill? Her babies were suffering and Lyra felt her heart constrict seeing them in such a condition.

Killian’s eyes mellowed gazing at his mate. He always knew that she was soft-hearted to her loved ones and felt warm. He couldn’t stop thinking about their future babies. He was sure that she would care and love them as much as she loved the cubs. His mate reminded him of his late mother. Killian once heard that his father was stubborn and an arrogant beastman until he met his mother. They loved each other but fate didn’t let them live longer.

Coming out of his thoughts, he looked at the witch doctor as he examined the cubs. And by the mere expression and unease of the latter, Killian was able to grasp that the situation was dire

As he guessed, the witch doctor turned towards them with a grim face, "They are poisoned, your majesty"

The lion queen gasped while covering her mouth. Lyra’s legs turned weak and Killian had to hold her from falling. Noah glanced at his cubs with a dreadful face.

"What do you mean by that?" It was the lion king who broke the silence, "Poison you say? Then treat them!"

The witch doctor nervously wiped his sweating palms and said, "I can’t your majesty..."

"You can’t!?" It was Noah this time, "What does that even mean elder?"

"The poison has already consumed all of their insides" he started to explain, "It will reach the heart in a few more hours, and then I’m afraid that they will not....."

"Stop please..." Lyra pleaded with a choked voice, "I beg you....please save them"

Following that, her heart-wrenching cries filled the entire room.

All of that sound and Lyra’s cries woke everyone in the castle. Blake was the nearest to Noah’s room and he rushed out hearing his mate’s wails.

Lucas, Victor, and Kyrell too woke up and came downstairs.

They heard everything from Killian and felt worried.

Amidst the pressure of so many strong beastmen in one place, the witch doctor continued to explain the cubs’ condition, "The poisoning is not a recent one your majesty. From what I can discern, it is the same poison that my lady consumed when she was pregnant"

Blake stepped toward the bed and inhaled the scent around the cubs and nodded, "It’s the same one"

Lyra crumbled even more with his confirmation. She blamed herself for not being careful enough.

The witch doctor sighed, "I believe that the antidote that my lady drank that day was not complete. It only removed the poison for some time and made us believe that it was fully gone"

Blake clenched his fists. He should have known better. That wretched merman was never the easy one. In the dilemma, they believed him and didn’t investigate further. Then he felt angry at Demir. That scorpion was the one who examined the antidote that day.

Without wasting any more time, he walked out of the room and turned into his beast form before slithering towards the scorpion tribe.

Meanwhile, on the other side, Kyrell felt his entire world crumble. He glanced at his beloved and frowned. If not for his stupidity, this wouldn’t have happened. Those little cubs didn’t deserve this. Then his red eyes turned into vertical slits. That merman was going to die today! He too left the castle in search of Gregory.

Theodore and Iria too woke up from their sleep due to the commotion.

Iria’s heart broke seeing the cubs’ condition. She blamed herself for all of this. She wished that she stayed dead rather than hurting her daughter like this by staying alive.

The patrolling guards of the scorpion tribe were caught off guard when Blake broke through the walls and entered their tribe.

They were not sure whether to attack the giant snake or not because Blake was someone familiar to them.

Demir opened his eyes and stared at the Black snake inside his room with nonchalance, "What?"

Blake turned back to his beastman form and glared at Demir, "What have you done bastard!?"

"What did I do?"

Demir was confused by his words in the beginning but his face paled as Blake explained everything. He called one of the guards, "Tell Darcio to come to the rose castle as soon as possible"
