Chapter 70: Operation SkyFall III
Operation SkyFall III
Like all the prominent figures in their Citadel, the Citadel Lord was quite infamous with his Beast which was called the Void-Tusk beetle.
Contrary to the name, the beast didn’t have any sort of Void affinity. It’s just that its ability made it seem like such.
No, it had two affinities. Force and Aura.
The attack it had just used was one Osho was somewhat familiar with as it was one of the staple abilities used by the man.
Phantom Gore was its name.
The beetle can project the force and essence of its horn attack in a straight-line thrust, allowing it to impale enemies from medium to long range, bypassing obstacles and partially ignoring physical defenses.
Or in simpler words, it was creating an extremely fast-moving, practically invisible projectile by infusing its Aura and kinetic energy into its horn before sending it forward, and it ignored physical durability to a certain degree.
It wasn’t the same as teleporting or cutting through space. It’s still a projectile, however, the speed is nearly untrackable, and the fact that it isn’t visible and difficult to sense even while using Mana makes it nigh-impossible to dodge. Like a Kinetic mirage of its horn.
This ability wouldn’t be as potent as it was were it not for the fact that the horn itself was quite special. It had no traits or racial abilities other than the fact that, one, it was insanely sharp. So sharp that the number of things that could resist its penetration was extremely few. At least at their stage. And two, it had a form of durability negation that wasn’t too overpowered but certainly potent enough to be felt.
This played a crucial role in how the attack worked. It condensed its Aura and Kinetic energy into a sort of ’phantom thrust’ and fires it out like a railgun.
Not to mention, due to the projectile carrying the aura of the horn, it also possesses some form of durability negation, allowing it to ignore a portion of armor or physical defenses. So scales, thick hides, shields, and so on.
Then there’s the charge aspect it possesses. The longer the Aura and kinetic energy are charged, the denser the projection. Thus, the greater the range and penetration power will be.
Lastly, the beetle needs to be able to see, or at least have a good idea of the position of its opponent, because the attack, other than using Aura to strengthen itself, also uses a form of Aura tracking that allows it to track its opponents.
That isn’t to say that it can’t be dodged, since it mostly flies in a straight line. It’s just extremely difficult to do so.
In essence, it’s a pretty simple yet powerful piercing attack, which made the creature quite infamous in their Citadel.
Most beetle-type beasts are known for their overbearing strength and typically serve as vanguard or tanks, but not only did this one move in a completely different direction, it seemed to dominate by doing so.
Most would wonder why such an attack is so effective, but it’s quite simple, really.
It is deadly consistent.
It’s predictable, but hard to survive unless you know what it can do, and even then, most can’t avoid it more than once.
It doesn’t need flashy skills, just timing, precision, and terrifying strength behind each strike.
’So how will you respond to that?’ Osho thought as he returned his gaze to the Harbinger, not staring at it directly of course.
Lady Haggai was already moving again as several large vines erupted from the ground around the Harbinger and started closing in to ensnare it, but it was prepared as several wind blades shot out from around it and cut the vines apart. However, as it did so, numerous small seed-like objects flew out of the sliced vines, and they rapidly grew into more vines which intertwined and formed a large net that fell on the Harbinger.
Each of the vines was covered in thorns that dug into the body of the Harbinger, though, the damage was meager.
Then again, their purpose wasn’t to harm it, but to keep it in place long enough for Simon’s Rhino to ram into it with both of its horns with enough force to destroy a hill.
The impact was, unsurprisingly, disastrous as horrible cracking sounds sounded from the Harbinger’s body, its chest caving in from the attack.
It vomited copious amounts of blood and more than a few pieces of its internal organs, yet its body started to glow with purple electricity once more, but before it could, a hold appeared on its neck, the attack causing it to falter.
It was then that Osho, and probably everyone else noticed a huge issue.
’Its regeneration is just too fast.’ He thought as the damage they were dealing kept healing shortly after it was dealt, and there were no longer lasting traces that suggested its rapid regeneration was taking a toll on it. That said, no beast is truly immortal.
’It can’t be better than a water bear-type beast anyway.’ Osho thought as he started thinking do solutions.
In the Headquarters, the handlers were way ahead of him as they had already noted the issue with its regeneration.
"Lady Jane was able to impair it for so long with that attack of hers, so heat or anything that can disrupt cell activity would be suitable for something like this. Moreover, its regeneration is bound to take energy. Even if we can’t out-damage it, we can make it regenerate too much and expend energy." One handler suggested.
"Even if that’s the case, we already know that it isn’t a mindless creature that only knows how to attack, it can very much see through our intentions if we start doing that. And even if we can’t, it will definitely try to avoid taking damage when its energy starts to get low." Someone else said.
Keep in mind, none of them had stopped their tasks or even slowed down, they were just throwing out any suggestions they felt could help, which was impressive considering that each of them was sleep-deprived, yet they could still multitask enough to try and come up with a way to counter the Harbinger’s regeneration.
Major Thompson deliberated for a while before saying.
"We will try and burn through its energy by hurting it as much as possible. If the asset can hold it down for long enough, then we can deal considerable damage to its vitality. Moreover, it’s possible the bloodline suppression can also limit its vitality. Also, order them to aim for vital areas like its brain and heart. We haven’t seen if striking those areas will cause a change in reaction." He ordered and the suggestions throwing was promptly ceased and replaced by a chorus of affirmations.
Back on the battlefield, the Harbinger finally escaped its bindings and let out an angry screech as a wave of black particles burst forth from its body and tried to wash over the attackers.
Everywhere these particles passed, everything began to wither and die as they seemed to be capable of destroying the lifeforce of anything they came into contact with.
So not only could it induce madness with the particles, it could also destroy lifeforce.
However, they had anticipated this as well based on the behavior they had observed, and that’s when another characteristic of the formation came into play.
Before the particles could go too far, a powerful pulse of mana blaster from the ground and blew all the particle upwards. More pulses blew the particles into themselves until it became a condensed ball, then they were ignited and incinerated om the spot.
The Harbinger: (*`Д´)ノ!!!
Unfortunately, it didn’t have time to dwell on the annoying barrier that kept on restraining it and its abilities as it was attacked once more.
As Osho watched, his frown started to deepen. He didn’t know why, but he felt like things were going well, too well.
’What are you planning?’ He thought and looked at Mrs Jane whose gaze was focused on the battle. She seemed to realize this as well, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the ones fighting knew it too.
A moment later, their concerns were unfounded.
Suddenly, the blood of the Harbinger which had spilled all over the battlefield started to shift and writhe, and everyone watched with shock as the puddles of blood rose and condensed into figures.
Dozens of small creatures that looked like miniature versions of the Harbinger rose into the air, each of which carrying an aura firmly at the Adept rank.
’Okay, what the fuck?’ Osho thought with visible frustration. This thing just kept on pulling out the most random abilities from an invisible backpack that seemed infinite.
He immediately felt Gale become restless, the bird almost screaming at him to be let out, and he really wanted to. But when he looked at Mrs Jane, she shook her head, causing his jaw to clench, but he didn’t do anything.
He’d already calculated the various outcomes brought about by everything he’d seen, and he knew that he could get Gale to fulfill his purpose for this fight.
But he also knew why they kept delaying. They wanted to Harbinger to show all of its cards and ensure that there would be no variables that could mess up Gale’s interference.
He just hoped that the people who could kill the thing were still alive by then.
