Chapter 69: Operation SkyFall II
Operation SkyFall II
’I fucking called it.’ Osho cursed as the Harbinger shot out of the path of the lance, causing the devastating attack to smash into the ground fruitlessly. He knew things wouldn’t end so easily.
It didn’t stop there, though, as the purple figure that was the Harbinger shot past the remainder of the E.E.S. teams and went straight for the barrier that held it.
It reached the edge in a moment and smashed into its surface with a devastating impact, however, the barrier held and stopped it from progressing forward.
But suddenly, the creature pressed its talons into the barrier, and a sickly purple color started to spread across the barrier from the points it was in contact with.
’Osho frowned as he sensed the Mana of the barrier in that spot start to falter as though it wasn’t receiving enough power, causing it to weaken.’ Before the Habringer could continue its actions, though, the other Expert Ranks had decided to step in.
All of a sudden, roots as thick as a person’s waist started to emerge from the ground en masse and smashed into the side of the Harbinger, temporarily halting its actions as it was thrown away.
The creature screeched angrily as it quickly stabilized itself and faced the vines which had multiplied even more and tried to engulf it.
It let out a powerful screech and flapped its wings with some effort. Upon doing so, black wind formed and condensed into two tornadoes dozens of meters in size that were made up of wind blades. The wind met with the vines and started to slice them apart. The vines resisted a bit but were ultimately overwhelmed by the power behind the tornadoes, causing them to get shredded.
The Harbinger exhaled a bunch of steam as its eyes moved around to look at its three new opponents.
There were two males and one female. The male in front was Simon who had his beast summoned. It was a large Rhino that had two horns instead of one, and its body looked to be covered in a sort of stone armor.
Slightly behind him was the other male who looked like an older man with a few Grey streaks in his hair. By his side was a rhinoceros beetle the size of a Sedan. Its carapace was light green and its horns seemed quite small in comparison to its body. At least, it seemed smaller than what most beetles of the same species had.
However, the difference was that the horn seemed to be unbelievably sharp, as its tips ended in almost impossibly pointy ends.
’That’s the Lord.’ Osho thought with some realization as he stared at the man who was also the leader of their Citadel. He knew he would be participating in this operation, but seeing him in person was still something else.
The man was a bit of a legend, and he was considered to be one of the strongest Epic rank Beast Tamers around. Not because his beast had some overpowered ability that made it an anomaly among beasts of the same level. Well, it wouldn’t seem that way at first glance, but the man with his ingenuity had made use of the ability and trained his beast in ways that put it in the upper echelon of Expert-Ranked beasts.
Then there was the third person who was the female as well as the one who had unleashed the tide of vines.
’Lady Haggai.’ Osho thought as he observed the woman whose beauty didn’t lose to Mrs Jane in any way. Long black hair and dark skin similar to Osho. She was a bit of a recluse from what Osho heard. At the very least, she didn’t have many known feats compared to the other experts, soldiers she was generally considered to be the weakest, even though Osho strongly doubted that was the case.
Her ’beast’ looked like a small willow tree that had taken root in the ground, its vines spreading beneath them in a vast and complicated network of vines and roots. Plant type beasts were rare due to how difficult it was for a plant-based lifeform to gain sentience even in this Mana-filled world, and it was even harder for them to have high potential, but it was possible.
Before he could dwell on the matter a bit more, the Harbinger shrieked, and several balls of unstable purple lightning formed in the air above it.
"Keep your eyes peeled. The moment the chance arises, you will have to act." Osho felt Mrs Jane’s hand on his shoulder and he nodded.
He knew that this confrontation right now was to give him a chance to have Gale suppress the Harbinger and then they could land the finishing blow. The thing would react instantly as soon as Gale appeared, so they had to time it and prevent it from being able to retaliate before it got suppressed.
Osho felt Gale’s dissatisfaction. Unsurprisingly, he thought that he could suppress it even if it was fully aware of his presence. Osho guessed it was the bird’s innate pride, and if he was being perfectly honest, he felt that Gale was right.
However, he had no intention of screwing up the plan, especially when there was no harm in waiting for the right. Well, except watching people die trying to get said opportunity for him.
’Don’t think about that.’ He chided himself as he watched the three Tamers go against the Harbinger.
The mistake of a monster started to fire the orbs of lightning at the three Tamers, each of them carrying a devastating amount of power. At least more than a few times the strength carried by a bolt of the railguns on the walls.
However, the three Tamers weren’t so simple either.
The Rhino snorted steam from its nostrils and charged forward. With each step it took, bits and pieces of the ground crawled up its legs and onto its body as an earthen armor was formed, leaving only its eyes uncovered.
The beetle stayed put, but Haggai and her beast acted.
Vines burst out of the ground and intercepted the balls of lightning, causing mutual destruction between the two affinities as the balls of lightning were dispersed while the vines shriveled up and died.
The clash continued as the Rhino got closer and closer. But instead of retreating, the Harbinger screeched and spread its wings wide. It flapped them and just like before, tornadoes of made of black wind blades were created and headed for the Rhino.
However, it didn’t back down or slow its charge. Instead, it ran faster, more pieces of earth and rock joining its armor as it medical the attacks head-on.
For a moment, Osho lost sight of the Rhino as it was engulfed by the tornadoes, and he frowned for a moment, but before he could question the seemingly stupid attack, he was surprised when he vaguely heard the sound of something sharp striking a solid surface numerous times a second, and a moment later, the Rhino ran through the tornadoes. Its armor was covered in deep cuts, but none of them were deep enough to reach and hurt its hide, meaning it was unharmed.
It also reached the Harbinger at this moment, and hits horns glowed a stony Grey before it rammed into the Harbinger with a horrific impact that shattered the ground beneath the two creatures. However.
’It doesn’t seem uncomfortable in close range.’ Osho thought with narrowed eyes as he saw the Harbinger hold back both of the horns with its talons, resisting the terrific strength of the Rhino without too much strain.
The creatures wrestled for a few seconds, the strength struggles causing waves of pressurized air to erupt outwards as they fought for dominance.
Inevitably, the strength of an Elite ranked creature was simply too overbearing, and the Rhino was slowly getting overwhelmed.
Keep in mind, none of them had used any magic in this struggle. It was a contest of pure strength, and the abomination that was the Skyblight Harbinger seemed to have an advantage in that category as well. It seemed to know this as well, and relished in the fact that it was pushing back a creature like this. It knew that it was one of the stronger ones sent by the humans.
But if this was all it had, then it was simply too wea-
SPLURT
Dark blood sprayed and the Harbinger faltered as blood poured from its chest.
Its eyes widened as it was caught completely off guard. What had hit it? From where? How had its defenses been penetrated so easily?
Before it could dwell on it, several vines sprouted from the ground and wrapped around its wings, then before it could resist, it was raised into the air before being smashed into the ground with a powerful BOOM.
’I see.’ Osho thought as he saw the dust clear and the Harbinger rise unsteadily. There was a head shaped hole in its chest, but it was already starting to close. Its regeneration was truly frightening.
It glared at one of its opponents and Osho followed its gaze to see the Lord of the Citadel, standing there with a bit of a mocking smile, the horn of his beast glowing.
