Chapter 71: Operation SkyFall IV

Operation SkyFall IV

"#### You’re quite impulsive."

"Hm?"

"I mean it, you always do things without thinking. They say it’s because of your ADHD, but even then, it’s almost reckless."

"First of all, how can you be so sure I have ADHD? Second, you call it impulsivity, but when has it actually worked against me? Huh? Things always turn out well, so why are you judging? Also, I call it good instincts, not impulsivity."

"What do you mean how can I be sure... You know what? Whatever. The point is, you should think before you act more. It works out well now, but you never know when being reckless will screw you over, and you never know when that time will hurt someone you care about."

___

Osho blinked a few times as the obscure memory ran through his mind.

’Why now of all times?’ He thought with a modicum of irritation as he continued to observe the battle.

When the miniature versions of the Harbinger appeared which he simply decided to call bloodline clones, the battle took a turn for the worse.

The things weren’t that strong individually. In fact, they seemed to just barely reach the threshold of Adept rank with how weak they were. However, the issue lay in two things, their numbers and their seeming indestructibility.

No matter how many times any of them got crushed, they always reformed and attacked once more. This, unsurprisingly, was an issue.

As a result, the three Tamers were forced to try and defend themselves while simultaneously dealing with the Harbinger. Lady Haggai was more suited for such a task as her vines made her quite flexible. However, splitting her attention between the blood clones and the Harbinger caused her role in the battle become less significant. As such, the two damage dealers, specifically the Rhino, was receiving a lot more punishment from the Harbinger as it wasn’t being supported to a satisfactory level.

The Citadel Lord’s beast was still putting in work, though. More often than not, whenever the Harbinger was about to rip through the Rhino’s armor and deal significant damage, the attacking limb would get a hole through it and be prevented from dealing any further damage.

As for the Rhino, one couldn’t discount its efforts either. Despite being the tank and suffering from all sorts of attacks, the thing wasn’t playing around with dealing damage at all. If the Harbinger struck at its armor with its talons, the armor would cover itself with spikes and deal damage simultaneously.

Moreover, since the Harbinger was still forced to the ground due to the gravity, the Rhino was having a field day continuously making its life on the ground hell. More often than not, it would shift the earth beneath it to make it lose balance, clamp its talons down with rocks to halt its movements, or just outright impale it.

Not to mention, while Lady Haggai wasn’t as proactive against the primary threat as everyone would like, she was still acting as a support in crucial moments.

If the Harbinger tried to unleash lightning on any of the other two, thick vines woukd emerge from the ground and block the attack. If the Harbinger tried to dodge an attack, vines would appear in the path it tried to dodge to and cause it to still get it. If it tried to fight the gravity and fly anyway, vines would appear and pull it down.

What’s more, she managed to get some of those seeds from before to land on its body, and from time to time, they would emerge on it and binding it, sometimes dealing decent damage with the thorns

All in all, the Harbinger seemed to be at a disadvantage from the beginning to the end.

So in that case, why was Osho’s mind screaming at him to let Gale loose?

He shot a glance at Mrs Jane and his heart sank a little. She looked confident. Which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, but she also looked at ease. Like she believed that the battle wasn’t going to change much besides this.

One couldn’t necessarily blame her for this assessment. After all, while the Harbinger was an anomaly, it wasn’t the first Elite rank creature that had been killed by the inhabitants of the Blossom Citadel. Far from it, in fact.

There had been at least more than a dozen Elite ranked creatures that had reared their heads only to get killed, their flesh, hides, bones, teeth, and the rest of them serving as resources that went to the stronger members of the Citadel to empower them.

It wasn’t the first time, and the Harbinger was a strange beast. But in the end, that’s all it was, a beast.

Or so it seemed.

It looked like it had been backed into a corner. All that remained was for its energy to run out, and it’d die. The fact that its Aura was gradually becoming more intense, and its presence becoming more subdued, seemed to cement this fact.

Everything pointed at the incoming victory of the humans. And yet...

’Something’s off.’ That was the thought Osho had. They were missing something, he didn’t know what exactly, but he knew they were missing something.

There was no evidence to suggest such, but Osho knew he was right, and if things continued to progress as they were, they’d regret it sorely.

’Sorry Mrs Jane. But i won’tlet anyone else die when i could prevent it.’ He thought before making his move.

___

Haggai let out a breath as she spread her attention through her beast.

Using their bond, she was acutely aware of the condition of her beast. As such, she was aware of the vast array of roots that ran through the ground, courtesy of her beast.

The particles the Harbibger unleashed seemed to make living things wither, but they weren’t able to permeate the ground, at least, not deeply. As such, the integrity of the roots weren’t compromised and could multiply as they pleased.

Moreover, the roots absorbed the Mana in the ground, which was why she was so liberal in her use of vines despite them constantly being destroyed, as she and her beast had Mana to spare.

Despite her calm temperament, she was quite passionate against creatures like this, the reason being.

’I want to study it.’ The thought wasn’t shouted in her mind, nor was there any weird undertones to it. No, it was a singular, almost primal desire.

’I want to study it.’ As mentioned before, Lady Haggai was a bit of a recluse. More than that, though, she was a scientist and excelled in many fields.

However, one thing notable about her was her impressive, almost uncanny ability to focus on things that interested her, and it was very, very difficult to break her out of that fixation. As for what interested her? Well, it was things that didn’t fit.

Things that made no sense, that made her question things that she believed couldn’t be changed. Those interested her the most, and right now, as she looked at the Harbinger, she had a singular thought.

’I want to study it.’ It was interesting how she could be so focused on something yet still do what she needed to do concerning other matters. For instance this battle right now.

She was dealing with the blood clones while simultaneously controlling the Harbinger and making it difficult to resist their onslaught despite her singular focus.

That said, maybe that was another way of her to study it. By pushing it to it to its limits, by seeing what made it tick, she was studying it in an odd way.

Still, it wasn’t enough. She wanted to get close, to understand how its mind worked, to open it up and observer how its organs worked, how it had the traits of several different creature, of how it regenerated. She wanted to know everything about it.

’I want to study i-’ Before she could complete her thought process, a flash of purple appeared in front of her.

It was fast, too fast for her to even think about what the light was, let alone dodge or react in any meaningful way.

BOOM

An explosion sounded out as the purple lightning bolt landed, far faster than anything the Harbinger had unleashed prior.

Everyone was stunned, and for a moment, the battle came to a standstill as everyone tried to comprehend what just happened.

"LADY HAGGAI!" Major Thompson roared, his voice booming through the comms of everyone which snapped them out of their stupor.

’Just now, that lightning bolt landed weird.’ Mrs Jane thought, still in a bit of a dase as everyone watched the dust cleared, and to their surprise, Lady Haggai was completely unharmed.

She and her beast were still in the same spot, the woman looking dazed as the explosion had caused her hair to look a bit disheveled, but otherwise, she was fine.

No, what looked out of place was the strange distortion in front of her, but what’s more, was the cause of this distortion.

Gale flapped a wing and blew away the rest of the dust in the air as he locked eyes with the Harbinger whose eyes were turning red with pure, unbridled rage. Seeing this, the bird lifted his beak and chirped.

Osho didn’t need his bond to recognize contempt.
