Chapter 38: First Exercise IV

First Exercise IV

’That was too close for comfort.’ After the encounter, Osho and the rest decided to move in the opposite direction of the gorillas, not keen on finding out where they came from or being there if they decided to go back.

’I will say, though, they are keeping their cool quite well.’ Osho noted as he glanced at his teammates. Ellie wasn’t smiling as usual, but her eyes were as bright as always. To a degree, he expected her to be calm, with her training and all.

However, it was the others that truly surprised him. None of them were in his class, they were just in the same year. But while there had been some moments where they looked like they would do something dumb out of fear, they had been surprisingly cool-headed. Especially with the gorillas. He genuinely expected one of them would shout out of fear, but they imitated his action of dropping to the ground as soon as he did, and they didn’t make even the smallest sound despite the obvious tension. It was impressive.

Suddenly, he felt his watch vibrate and he looked down to see a message from Kurt. Judging by how no one else looked at their watches, it was a private message.

[Hey.] Osho didn’t look at the guy and just responded.

[?]

[Must be nice being friends with Eleanor.] Osho blinked, Ellie was a nickname, her full first name was Eleanor.

[Uh, yeah? Why?] He replied, confused.

[You two seem close.]

[... Is there something you want to say or...?]

[I’m just saying, you guys are practically joined by the hip, it’s hard to find a guy and a girl who are so close.] Now Osho was very confused.

His gaze shifted to the boy who was staring back at him with an amused look, he tagged his brows in a suggestive motion and Osho just stared at him blankly.

[If you’re trying to raise morale then why are you only talking to me?] He asked and when Kurt read the message, his smile froze and his brow twitched.

[Are we deadass?]

[(0_0?)]

[( ̄- ̄)]

The girls watched the interaction with justified confusion.

[What are you guys talking about?] Ellie asked.

[Kurt is being weird.] Osho replied and everyone looked at Kurt who seemed to be five seconds away from smashing his skull into a tree.

[You know what? Forget it. I guess the rumors are true.] He sighed.

[What rumors?] Osho pressed. However, Kurt just shook his head. It looked like disappointment.

Osho: (ō_ō?)

Ellie: (

Sam: (ó_ò)

Irene: (0_0)

Deciding not to focus too much on the strange interaction, the group proceeded, and it didn’t take long for them to find their next target.

This time, it was Clyde who spotted it. Well, spot would be too generous, it was more accurate to say that he heard it because turns out, the creature they found was one that was good at camouflage.

Gale hadn’t even noticed it despite his sharp vision, however, as soon as Osho pointed it out to the bird, Gale noticed it instantly, which he found strange. Then again, he hadn’t told Gale to actively look for anything capable of blending in with the environment, so it was likely it wouldn’t have been so observant given his current mindset.

The creature was a dog-sized Chameleon that was quietly perched on a branch.

Osho, along with everyone else, simply couldn’t see it with their own eyes. It was strange, but it seemed like whatever camouflage it possessed didn’t just make it blend in with the surroundings, but disrupted light in such a way that it was practically impossible to observe with the human eye. The best they could do was notice the faint shimmer in the space where it occupied as light seemed to bend in that spot.

As such, much of the observation fell on Osho as he relied on Gale’s significantly sharper vision to observe the Chameleon somewhat properly.

As he watched. He noted a few things, the first being that it was an ambush predator, a fact he observed from seeing its tongue shoot out and wrap around an arm-sized dragonfly before pulling it back into its mouth in a blink.

Speaking of the tongue, it was clear that was its main form of attack, its speed and strength were nothing to scoff at.

Then there was its camouflage. Its ability to warp light and keep itself hidden was an uncommon trait. Moreover, it could regulate its body temperature to match its surroundings. They knew this because despite using their goggles.

Ellie suggested that maybe using the Night vision mode would allow them to see it better since the way it captured light was different, but they were quickly reminded why using Night vision during the day wasn’t the best idea as all of them were essentially flashbanged due to the oversaturated image that was fed through the lenses.

As such, they stuck to Osho using Gale for assistance.

Soon enough, they gathered enough information and moved on to find their third target, and it was with said third target that things went wrong for a bit.

They were 3 hours in at this point, and they’d found their next target. However, Clyde’s ears twitched wildly and the fox let out a small squeal as it looked in another direction.

The group immediately noticed something was off and Kurt felt the beast’s unease as it faced that direction. A few seconds later, they figured out the reason why.

A creature like the Raptor beast their convoy had killed on its way to the Outpost ran towards them, a high-pitched roar leaving its mouth as it approached them, and it wasn’t alone.

Two more Raptors trailed behind it, each of them looking hungry.

Osho frowned as he wondered how they got detected, but he noticed that the Raptor in the lead had strange orange eyes that glowed.

"Tch, everyone get ready!" Osho yelled, not bothering to keep his voice down.

The group quickly got into formation, and in good time the raptors reached them.

Sugil’s tongue flicked and she let out a threatening hiss as several crystal spikes shot out of the ground, aiming to impale the creatures.

However, the raptors were faster as they all moved out of the way and split up to surround the group, one heading for Ellie and Clyde, another going for Osho, and the last going for Irene.

Osho frowned and made a finger Gun at the Raptor approaching him before firing off a wind bullet.

It struck the beast in the shoulder and breached its skin, causing it to recoil from the pain.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Irene moving forward to assist Sam as Blackie had reappeared and slashed the hind leg of the raptor with its claws.

Meanwhile, Sugil created a Crystal shield which the other Raptor tried to bite over, but Clyde unleashed powerful sound blasts that made the thing reluctant to proceed.

The Raptor that approached Osho roared in anger as it recovered from the bullet and it prepared to charge him again, but this time, Osho didn’t move as a torrent of near-invisible windblades descended on the Raptor.

He watched as the thing was sliced into pieces with ease, its body no match for the razor-sharp blades of wind, and after the attack, all that remained was a gordy mess of chopped-up flesh.

’Thanks.’ Osho told Gale as he turned to his teammates.

He looked in time to see Inagi get bitten by the Raptor and be thrown into a tree, but not before leaving a nasty claw mark across the eye of the Raptor.

Irene screamed and ran towards her beast, but Osho sent Gale forward. The bird accelerated rapidly and flew into the Raptor like a bullet, its powerful beak piercing through its chest and allowing it to go all the way through, leaving a head-sized hole in the thing.

There was a shattering sound and Osho turned to see the barrier Sugil had erected get broken through.

The Raptor opened its mouth and prepared to bite down on Ellie, but Sugil created a crystal ball and smashed it into the thing’s face, throwing it back.

Gale appeared like a phantom behind the creature and sentba wind blade at its neck. But it surprisingly was able to dodge and retreat as it observed them.

"Irene, how is Inagi?" Osho asked, not taking his eyes off the Raptor, a moment to later, a slightly shaky but releived voice entered his ears.

"He’s okay... nothing important was hurt. There’s a lot of blood though..." She trained off and Osho narrowed his eyes.

’Screw holding back.’ He thought and commanded Gale to finish it.

The bird who had been waiting eagerly chirped and his body blurred.

The Raptor, startled, tried to move, but a grey flurry flashed past its head, causing it to freeze. A second later, a red line appeared on its neck, and its head fell off, its body crumbling shortly after.

For a moment, everyone panted as they waited to see if there was anything else. Once the adrenaline died down, Sam, Kurt, and Irene collapsed on their butts while while Ellie placed her hands on her knees, panting.

Osho was also breathing a bit hard, which was funny considering that entire engagement had lasted just a little over a minute.

’I shoukd have had Gale end it the moment the fight started.’ He thought with self-annoyance.

When he saw the Raptors, he decided that it was a good chance for all of them to get some experience, that’s why it took so long for Gale to engage, but he was starting to regret that decision now.

He turned to see Irene cradling Inagi. For all intents and purposes, the Lizard was seriously hurt, just that there was a large bite mark on its back. But by now, the blood had already stopped flowing, the creature’s strong healing capabilities coming into play.

’Then again, I didn’t actually do anything wrong.’ His mind was a bit conflicted. Part of him, the gentler part of him that had grown up in this world, wanted to think he could have settled things without injuries.

But the old him, the one he rarely showed, felt that he did the right thing.
