Chapter 39: Task Complete

Task Complete

’In hindsight, we did pretty decent. Those raptors were late-stage Novice ranks. Most students have no business handling something like that, let alone three, but we only got out with a medium wound on Inagi that’s already healing.’ He thought.

"Hey, Osho, thanks for that." Osho turned to see Irene and Sam standing behind him. Blackie looked a little rougher up, with her fur messy and covered in dirt, but otherwise, she was fine. Inagi had stopped bleeding completely, and the wound on its back was starting to close, it seemed slow, but the process was visible to the naked eye.

"Yeah. You saved us back there. Who knows what would have happened." Irene said with a bit of a sad smile as she crawled her beast.

"It’s not a problem." Osho just nodded.

"Still, your beast handled each of those raptors with one move. I’m sure you could have dealt with all of them without our input." Kurt chimed in, Ellie following close behind as they gathered up once more.

"How’s Inagi?" Ellie asked Irene softly and she just nodded.

"He’ll be fine in a bit. They speculate he can even regrow lost limbs so, this much isn’t a problem." She explained. Her own explanation made her relax as she remembered the lizard’s healing factor.

"Hm, you think we can find out the attributes of these raptors and add them to our report?" Sam asked while glancing at the dead creatures.

"I want to say yes, but the smell of blood is probably gonna attract more beasts, so we can’t stay here for long," Osho answered and they all groaned.

"Wait, our watches can just take pictures," Ellie remembered and held her watch in the direction of the dead creatures and started taking pictures from different angles.

"Huh? Our watches can’t do that." Irene stated with confusion and Osho just shrugged.

"Rich people stuff, don’t question it."

6 hours later, the group finally returned to the camp, using the strings to find their way back.

There were no more unforeseen incidents, though, there were a few close calls, but they managed to get the rest of the needed information without much hassle.

Besides learning how to better observe different types of creatures, their ability to traverse the wilderness had gotten better. They’d gotten better at staying hidden, and their cohesion became more refined.

Still, hours in such a tense state of mind was draining, so when they returned, it was like a weight had been lifted off their shoulders, and they suddenly felt exhausted.

The sun was beginning to dip towards the horizon, and by now, some lights were starting to come on in the small base.

"Well done all of you. You did a good job coming back safely. Any injuries we should be aware of?" The teacher in charge of them, Stan, immediately went up to meet them with a big smile on his face.

Everyone just pointed at Inagi whose back was already mostly healed, all that remained was some pink flesh that hadn’t been covered in scales. Seeing this, Stan nodded and pointed at the medical tent.

"it seems to be healing nicely, but just to be safe, I suggest it be taken for an evaluation," He turned to the rest of them. "I trust you’ve completed your task?" As soon as he said that, Kurt handed him the notebook they’d been using, it was surprisingly neat considering the situation.

"Splendid. I’ll hand this to Mrs Jane to get her opinion. For now, I’m sure you guys are tired. You can rest in the buses.

Everyone nodded, not keen on speaking. Irene carried Inagi towards the medical tent while the rest went to one of the buses.

There were already a few students inside, each of them looking worse for wear. Some had injuries with bandages covering them, but nothing serious.

The group collapsed on some of the chairs.

"Well, that was fun," Ellie said without any humor and they just glanced at her.

Osho folded his arms and closed his eyes, his mind running as he replayed everything they’d done in his mind from start to finish. What they did right and the mistakes they made. Overall, he’d say they did decent. None of them had made a mistake that put the entire group in danger, and they completed their task with satisfactory results. Their speed wasn’t too bad either, all things considered.

As such, his mind drifted back to his conflicted feelings when they engaged the Raptors.

They concluded the lead raptor had a strange ability that gave it excellent vision, which is probably why it was able to spot them despite them keeping low and not making any noise as they moved.

When the Raptors approached, Osho quickly saw their Auras to be in the late stage of the Novice ranks and initially wanted Gale to dispatch all of them. But he remembered that it was a group exercise, so dealing with all of them by himself would defeat the purpose of the exercise being group-based, and in doing so, he’d cause them to rely on him too much. Maybe Ellie wouldn’t, but the same couldn’t be said for the others.

That’s why he didn’t immediately have Gale swoop down and kill everything, and instead, he waited for the Raptors to engage the group. That’s where their inexperience really showed.

In regards to Ellie and Kurt, the attacks their beasts used had been far too straightforward. Take Sugil’s opening attack, she created the spikes that just went straight, and it wasn’t as if they appeared directly under the raptors either. It was a gradual build-up, one that gave them time to dodge.

If Ellie had been more experienced, she’d have used a follow-up attack, like having crystal spikes waiting for the raptors, so as soon as they dodged to the side, they’d be struck again due to being unable to dodge.

Moreover, when the Raptor was trying to bite over the wall, she could have had Sugil create spikes on the wall to impale the creature instead of relying on Kurt to disorient the creature.

Next was Sam. He hadn’t paid too much attention to their side of the battle in the beginning, but apparently, Inagi had fulfilled its role as tank as it engaged the Raptor while Blackie attacked from the shadows. That was good, however, the bits and pieces he saw didn’t satisfy him.

The cat could practically turn invisible as long as there were shadows around, and the thick canopy of trees created an abundance of the phenomenon, meaning it could almost always keep itself hidden, and for the most part, that’s what it had been doing.

What Osho didn’t understand was why the cat would reveal itself right before attacking. As far as he was aware, that wasn’t a limit that came with its ability, and it could still hit things while remaining hidden. So for it to reveal itself and give the raptor a chance to dodge of defend itself when assaulted just didn’t make sense. Moreover, it could have stayed under the raptor via its shadow. It was nimble enough to avoid being stepped on, and its claws were very sharp, more than enough to penetrate the soft belly of the creature and deal more fatal wounds.

Then there was Irene and Inagi. He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t slightly annoyed with her. Now that he had calmed down, he realized that avoiding injury so strongly, especially for a beast so durable, was dumb.

Inagi could inflict poison, and the only way to inflict said poison was through its teeth and claws, two things that required it to get close to its opponent. Yet Irene had been so caught up in preventing Inagi from getting injured, that she missed numerous opportunities for the Lizard to get close and bite or scratch the Raptor. The poison was necrotic, so not only was it deadly, but it was also painful. The Raptor wouldn’t have been so coherent with the sensation of its body slowly decomposing.

Then there was Kurt, and he’d probably be the only one Osho was satisfied with. Clyde wasn’t very durable, nor did he possess good close range abilities. So his choice to stay behind Ellie and have the fox unleash powerful blasts of sound was good.

Moreover, ge said that Clyde didn’t yet have good control over his abilities, so it was easy for him to cause friendly fire, and according to him, he could cause sounds loud enough to rupture eardrums.

He’d been smart and simply had him created noises loud enough to disorient the creature while allowing Clyde to retain control over his own abilities, reducing the risk of hurting Ellie and Sugil while not diminishing his usefulness.

If there was one thing he wished Kurt did, though, it was to use the sounds as a distraction.

Maybe not something as advanced as mimicking a roar, but something of similar effect to distract the Raptor and give themselves an opening.

After his analysis, he sighed and opened his eyes. That’s when he noticed everyone staring at him, and that Irene had already returned, a small bandage on Inagi’s back.

"... What?" He raised a brow.

"Nothing... you were just thinking very hard, so you looked irritated." Ellie said with a bit of amusement. This made Osho tilt his head. He recalled her telling him that if he was deep in thought, he’d frown like something was wrong.

Shaking his head, he spoke.

"Enough about that. I thought back to that fight and I want to talk about where I think we can improve."
