Chapter 72: A little help

VALENCIA’S POV

"Here," Shadow extended his hand and wiped the corner of my lips as I was drinking some cold coffee while watching TV with him.

Yes, we sorted and checked some assignment sheets after having dinner and were now watching a horror film because both of us agreed they were another form of comedy these days.

I looked at his side profile as he sipped his coffee while watching TV and couldn’t help but sigh.

He was so natural at this. It made me wonder how many girls he really has been with.

"What are you looking at?" He asked after some time, and I shook my head, unsure of why the thought of him being with many girls made me sad.

"Want to lie down a little?" He asked.

"Will you be okay with that?" I asked, and he smiled before nodding.

I felt a heat creep up my neck, feeling a little shy, as I leaned toward his lap-

"You can put your feet on my lap. I don’t mind," Shadow said, and I froze in my place.

He thought I would put my feet on his lap, and my head on the hand support. But what was I doing?

I was going to put my head on his lap!!

Embarrassment immediately took over me.

"Ohh, I... I am sorry," I whispered, my heart drumming in my chest, and I was about to sit straight when he placed his hand on my shoulders, securing me where I was, leaving me with no other choice but to lie down completely.

’You know, we are supposed to watch the movie,’ Aurora commented as I lay there, watching Shadow’s profile once again.

His sharp jawline, the way his Adam’s apple was moving when he was drinking coffee, the way his hands flexed, the veins in his hands tracing a little whenever he moved his hands and how comforting his scent was, were making me want to snuggle close to his abdomen and have the best sleep of my life.

"Is my jawline more interesting than the horror movie?" He asked before looking down at me.

I felt a weird excitement in my stomach, and for once, rather than averting my gaze, I looked at him straight in the eyes even after being caught.

"Why are you suddenly being so nice to me?" I asked.

"I mean, you weren’t particularly mean to me, but I feel you have been too nice to me ever since we left the University today. Is it because you want me to feel comfortable around you? Or is there any hidden agenda behind it?" I asked, blinking at him.

I know he can lie all he wants if he doesn’t want to reply to me. He can say all the wrong answers, but I still wanted to hear them.

"Do you think you are ready to hear the answer?" Shadow asked as he paused the movie, his entire attention on me now.

"I have heard of worse things in life. Believe me, I can handle the harsh words," I said before I moved to sit straight.

However, he pushed me back down, pulling me up and close in a way that my head was right under his neck and more than half of my body was between his legs.

"Shadow, this-"

This position was too intimate for me.

It wasn’t anything indecent, but it was intimate in a way where my heart wanted to believe in love and care, the two things I had never been offered since I turned 14.

"Why did you have to hear those harsh words?" Shadow said as he leaned closer to me, making me flinch a little and close my eyes instinctively.

However, rather than taking advantage of the situation, he placed his forehead on mine before breathing heavily.

His hands guided my hand on his chest, making me feel how his heart was beating a little faster than usual, and I lifted my gaze to look into his eyes as he pulled away only enough to look at me, my heart drumming even louder in my chest.

What was the meaning behind his gaze?

"Shadow, you are being too close," I commented, still not averting my gaze from his face, and he hummed.

"I want to be even closer, Mitsuki, only if you allow me," he whispered before he kissed my forehead and pulled my head back on his chest, hugging me.

How can he hug me so calmly after saying something like this? My head was a complete mess now.

What did he mean by those words?

He wanted to be closer to me. What kind of close? Was he talking about deepening our friendship? Or was there more meaning behind his words?

I was about to ask him to be more clear with his choice of words when I felt my phone vibrating in my pocket.

Seriously? Sometimes I believe those movies. People find the weirdest and wrong times to call someone.

With a sigh, I got up before fishing out my phone and walking some distance.

"Hello?" I said casually, not wanting Shadow to think I was having some kind of shady business.

"Mam," the whimpering sound came from the other side, and all the feelings I was having earlier, dissipated in a second.

I took a deep shaky breath.

This voice, the tremble behind this voice only meant one thing. They were in trouble, and I cleared my throat, wanting to keep emotions neutral.

"What is it?" I asked.

"They took her away, Mam. M-my wife... It was an hour ago. We had a shortage of wood. Mona said I should bring more wood for her because she was feeling cold, and it wasn’t good for the baby. I went to collect the wood, but by the time I returned, no one was there. They took her away, mam. My unborn baby... She... She is in no position to fight back," The man whimpered and cried on the other side.

I couldn’t help but lock my jaws.

"Any recent activity?" I asked, keeping my words as precise as I could.

"Alpha’s son of the Black Haze pack. He has been eyeing my wife for quite some time. He tried to sneak into our camp earlier too, and that was the reason we shifted away at some distance. However, he... He wanted to sleep with her and - " The man paused, clearly finding it hard to say anything.

"That’s enough. Let me see what I can do," I said before ending the call.

Alpha’s son. These bastards really think they are above all just because they get a little power here and there.

"Is everything alright?" Shadow asked me with quirked brows, and I smiled at him.

"Yeah, it was just my friend who needed my help with something. It’s quite late too. We shouldn’t stay together for such an extended period, lest it would be frowned upon. Can I trust you to lock the doors and place the key under the doormat before leaving?" I asked, wanting to give clear signals that I was indirectly asking him to leave.

He looked at his wristwatch before smiling at me.

"Yeah, I guess. I should leave," He stood, making me sigh gratefully.

Once he left, I locked the doors and all the windows before leaving my lakehouse, not before leaving a note for Carl that I would be back soon.

I opened the maps and saw that the so-called Black Haze pack was around 150 km away from here.

It would be foolish to change into any of my forms to go there.

I dialed Aiden’s number.

"Hello? What is it, Valencia? It’s almost 1 in the morning -"

"Send someone with a bike with a full tank to the Forest junction within fifteen minutes. It’s urgent," I said before ending the call.

I looked around, and once I ensured no one was there, I started running towards the forest junction myself.
