Chapter 325: A witness from past

THIRD PERSON’S POV

To say everyone was shocked would be an understatement.

The color drained from Prince Ethan’s face, but nothing could compare to King David’s expression.

It has been three days since he received an anonymous letter in his name. The letter was strictly to be opened by him.

Thinking that it was some kind of information regarding pack members’ rebellion from the spies he had asked his team to spread among the nation so they could know about their people’s every move, King David hadn’t thought much about it and given it little significance.

Rather than opening the letter immediately, he had gone horse riding to freshen up his head.

Things had been a little peachy after the royal ball, and his son, Prince Ethan, was atrociously distant from everyone.

However, when he returned from his horse riding practice, he saw his daughter sitting in his office, waiting for him with an anxious expression.

He knew something was wrong immediately.

King David asked Princess Dilbar what was troubling her. When the princess showed him the letter, he realized he had received the same one but ignored it.

He opened his letter and read the contents of it, blood draining from his face.

Could it be a joke? After twenty years, how could this be true?

"Dad, is this true? Is Prince Ethan not the real heir, I mean, your legitimate son? Why didn’t I know anything about this? Is my biological brother somewhere out there?" Princess Dilbar’s face was streaked with dried tears, and David sighed.

He told her everything that had happened twenty years ago, and when she asked him again if there was a possibility of the actual prince being alive, King David denied it.

That couldn’t be possible.

After the attack, he had deployed nearly 500 soldiers to look for his dear son. He had waited for six months for any signs or hope that his son would return until his wife lost it entirely, and he had to bring his illegitimate son back home.

However, now that Valencia had said such words, how could they stay still?

"What nonsense are you spouting?" Princess Dilbar, being the spoilt one, was the first one to snap.

Valencia raised her brows at the girl but didn’t say anything.

She kept her gaze focused on King David.

"When I came here with this kind of demand and found the truth with the help of my man here, I thought King David would be relieved and thrilled to have his son back, but that doesn’t seem like the case. In that case, I won’t jeopardize this happy family," Valencia turned around swiftly, ready to leave.

King David, whose heart was in turmoil, trembled a little.

It was hard for him to process everything. Could it be that she was telling the truth? Though Valencia had a history of being a rogue and quite cunning one, he knew not to question the beast Alpha, who wouldn’t waste his time over such a matter that would ruin his reputation.

He looked at his son, Prince Ethan, whose fists were clenched by his side. As wrong as he knew this scenario was, the kingship, the blood bond, won, and he stopped Valencia.

"Please don’t be offended by her words. She is merely shocked because she doesn’t know what exactly happened. If you know anything about my son— Can I see him?" King David asked directly, remembering how she said they brought the rogue here.

Valencia looked at Prince Ethan before shaking her head.

"Before presenting you to the man himself, I want to know if you can recognize your son. Tell me something that distinguishes your son," Valencia asked.

Though it was twenty years ago, David still remembered every little detail of his precious gem, which he loved dearly.

"He had a birthmark on his back; my elder brother gave the family heirloom to him when he was born and announced him the next king because he didn’t have any children and quite a distinct mole under his left ear," King David said.

Valencia nodded, but much to his displeasure, she didn’t make a move to bring the rogue out.

"Good. Before presenting you to the rogue, I mean, you son, I would like you to meet someone who could tell what happened in that historical attack that the royalty of others didn’t know," Valencia said.

Maverick looked at the king and told him how this man was laying low and living in hiding because he feared his life as he was the only witness of the attack, the conversation he shouldn’t have heard and didn’t want to die.

King David waited in anticipation, his pupils dilating when he saw who walked inside the royal palace.

"Mr. Han?" King David asked.

The old man smiled at the king with a forced expression.

Valencia thought she would have to introduce the man to the king, but it was surprising how clearly the King knew his subordinate even after so many years.

It indicates how great this family used to be once upon a time.

"Where did you ... I thought you died that day. This man is our father’s secretary who took over as our second advice minister," King David explained.

Prince Ethan froze in his place.

"What do you mean by this, Valencia? How low do you want to stoop to avenge your humiliation?" Prince Ethan cut them off before they could talk more.

Valencia raised her brows but didn’t say anything.

"And what would she want revenge for, Prince Ethan?" Maverick asked.

Ethan clenched his teeth. He almost slipped and said for planning to ruin her character.

"Because of what Dilbar did. Isn’t that exactly why she tries to sow discord between us?" Ethan cunningly placed the blame on his sister.

Dilbar felt irritated. She was about to retort when Valencia chuckled.

"Stop spouting nonsense, Ethan. We all know what is going on here," she said.

"Miss Valencia! Know your limits. How can you say the prince’s name like this?" Ethan’s secretary stepped forward in his boss’s defense.

Valencia was least bothered and scared of anything with Maverick by her side.

"I am sure after King David hears of what happened all those years ago, he won’t stay a prince for long," Valencia smirked before she looked at King David.

Mr Han looked at Valencia before taking a deep breath.

"I was there. The night on which the attack happened, we lost our King and Queen, and your son was abducted," Mr Han said.

King David shook in his place, thinking about that dreaded night that took away his father-like brother and his mother-like sister-in-law from his life. Not only that, they even lost their son among so many lives of people who worked at the palace.

"It was a well-played conspiracy that no one would have thought of," Mr Han added. David’s eyes widened.

"A conspiracy?" he asked.

Han nodded.

"That attack was planned, sir. And it was planned by the people who benefited the most from it. The rogues were hired and put together in this. Those people you trust were the ones who betrayed you," Han paused before looking at Prince Ethan.

"This boy was a part of that plan," Han dropped the bomb, and King David looked at him with wide eyes while Ethan stood frozen in his place.

There was no way the rogues left the witnesses alive. He was sure everyone was killed that night. No one who could sing the stories of the past and come between him and his throne was left alive. Then where did this guy come from? It didn’t make any sense at all.

"There are limits to everything. Where did you guys bring this imposter from? I was involved in this? I was a child who could barely recite proper names. Are you trying to say I magically got the soul of a mature person and conducted all these attacks? Is this what you want to say?" Prince Ethan seethed.

"Guards, take this man away and throw him in the cell," Ethan said, and a few guards stepped forward.

Han pressed his lips into a thin line. He knew agreeing to help them would endanger his life, but he had been silent for too long. He ate this palace’s salt. How could he betray his leader, who had done so much for him? They deserved to know the truth; he was ready to tell them everything today.

Han didn’t want to be a coward anymore, but he was helpless with the new generation and couldn’t help but look at Valencia helplessly.

Valencia saw the man’s fear in his eyes and looked at Maverick, who gave her a reassuring smile.

"The man hasn’t completed his sentence. We brought him here with permission. We have maintained our respect. I would like to see who dares to hurt him on my watch since his life is my responsibility," Maverick said.

The guards looked at Prince Ethan for further instruction. Ethan was about to speak, so they asked Maverick what he gained from all this when King David spoke.

"I would like to hear what this man has to say, even if he is an imposter," King David said resolutely before looking at the guards, who retreated silently.

Ethan stood there rooted. He wouldn’t be able to stop it, so he needed to find ways to collect their sympathy instead.
