Chapter 305: Something weird

VALENCIA’S POV

"Certainly," I replied curtly, and the woman looked at Maverick, probably looking for help to understand what I was trying to say or do here.

I sighed.

Nodding at Maverick to let him know I was feeling fine, I sat on the couch in the room.

"You have appeared here to help me because you know that the devil has met me. Where were you when he took me?" I asked.

"My love," Maverick started, but I shook my head at him.

"Don’t you see it, Maverick? These people are nowhere to be found when we need them. However, they magically appear to give us some kind of lecture and pity and show us they are on our side, but when we look for help, we are alone. It’s all a facade," I told him.

He immediately stopped talking.

The lady, who had a frown, froze momentarily, probably not expecting me to ask this question.

"I was in the–"

"Why didn’t you come then to help me? And now that what he had intended to do has been done, what are you doing here, trying to show your sympathy and empathy?" I asked, cutting her in between.

The lady before me sighed.

"Valencia, I know you are angry because of how things are going, but I hope you understand that as an angel who is bound by the laws of nature, I can’t exactly interfere with what is bound to happen," The lady said.

Her words made me scoff.

If she couldn’t change what was bound to happen, what was she showing this pity for?

What was this so-called help for? If I were bound to die while fighting, I would do it either way. Could this useless help be of any work at that time?

As if she understood the problem with her sentence, the lady massaged her forehead before taking a deep breath.

"I understand you, Valencia. You are right in your place. What am I doing here if I can’t exactly bring you out of this situation? What am I doing here if I can’t help you dodge the devil and free you from his evil tricks? I know that’s what you are thinking about," The lady said.

This time, I kept mum.

"Well, your relationship with the devil is like a lock with its unique key. You could kill him just like only a specific key could open the mysterious lock. None of us can interfere with it. However, he has found you and will be using you. The least we can do is try to protect you until you are ready to do it. It’s not something you can dodge," The lady said.

I didn’t feel she was lying in any way.

If I had any doubts, they were cleared now.

It was inevitable, and I will have to face him.

"I am Kelly, one of the angels from heaven. The other angels didn’t want me to come here and console you, but I still wanted to because deep down, you are doing something we should have done: protect the world from evil claws," The lady named Kelly changed her tone, and I sighed.

I didn’t want to lash out, either. But after going through that kind of ordeal, I just couldn’t control myself and had an emotional and mental breakdown.

"Your mother had told me how stubborn you are, but I underestimated you." Her words made me look at her with wide eyes, and her useless words started to interest me now that my mother was mentioned.

Could she help me meet my mother again?

The idea of seeing that beautiful heavenly lady who sacrificed her life to protect me made my heart clench painfully.

"No, I can’t help you meet her," Kelly said, and I licked my lips, dejection taking over the hope I had felt.

"She will come to meet you occasionally, though, until you fight the devil. We angels petitioned the authorities to allow her soul to be able to do that since she wasn’t being reborn," Kelly said.

I nodded.

"Can I at least see her?" I asked.

Kelly sighed and clicked her fingers.

A screen-like thing appeared, and I saw my mother walking in a beautiful garden with fountains and fairies.

Her beauty was unmatched, and I felt my heart tingling as I raised my hand, wanting to touch her.

"You can’t touch her. She is in the place for souls," Kelly said.

I nodded, knowing this angel helped me see my mom in her proper form because even I knew the souls go back to their original mysterious form when they leave our body, and all the past connections are lost.

I touched the screen, imagining touching my mom’s cheeks. Images from the last time she had come to meet me, warning me about things and apologizing, appeared in my mind.

Tears brimmed my eyes, and I blinked back quickly.

The screen disappeared when my mom smiled, and I smiled with her, holding Maverick’s hand, who placed his hand over mine to comfort me.

Now that I was feeling much calmer than before, I licked my bottom lip.

"What will you help me with?" I asked.

"The devil made you swallow the dirty smoke so you will have a part of his magic inside you, and he can keep a kind of leash on you. I am here to remove those traces," Kelly said.

I nodded and stepped closer to her as she beckoned me.

She placed her hand on my chest, and I felt my heart beat as something moved inside me.

She opened her eyes, looking at me with raised brows.

"How is this possible?" she asked, and I looked at Maverick, unable to comprehend what she was trying to say.

"What is it?" Maverick stepped forward and held my hand.

Kelly looked at me before shaking her head.

She closed her eyes again and placed her hand on my chest. However, as soon as she did that, she removed her hand again.

"This is unbelievable," she gasped. I was about to ask her what was wrong when she left us alone.

I gazed at Maverick to see if he had any idea what was happening, but Maverick shook his head to let me know he was as oblivious as I was.

I was confused, but there was something that confused me other than this angel’s reaction.

It was the feeling of something moving inside my heart.

It was as if a figment or a thread-like thing moved as soon as she placed her hand there.

"Sometimes, I wonder if I am the weird one or the people around me are," I commented to Maverick before taking a deep breath.

I was about to walk to the nightstand where my phone was, and I felt their presence again. I turned around in time to see Kelly, who had appeared with one more woman by her side.

"This is my senior, Alisha," Kelly introduced the lady with a dark complexion and black veil collecting around her feet.

She indeed looked much more poised and mature than Kelly.

"Allow me," Alisha said, and I felt a little wary.

As soon as she extended her hand to touch my chest, I held her hand in time.

"Who are you touching?" My voice came deeper than I had thought, and I saw Alisha’s eyes widen briefly.

She looked at Kelly before looking at me.

I was about to ask what was wrong and why they were acting like this when Kelly placed her hand on her abdomen and bowed to me.

I turned to Maverick, who had a dark expression.

He came forward and held my hand before pulling me behind him.

"What is it that you guys can’t speak about?" Maverick asked, hiding me behind him, his actions engulfing me in a cocoon of safety.

"Let her sleep," Alisha said.

"No, I want to know too," I said, but it was too late.

As soon as she said those words, my eyes drooped before I felt Maverick picking me up in his arms.

I could feel the soft mattress under me before darkness took over me.
