Chapter 281: History with Alfonso

VALENCIA’S POV

I looked at the man before me whose hands were clamped with heavy metal chains and couldn’t help but feel disheartened.

I still remember meeting him for the first and last time.

I had just started university here around six months ago and was quite rebellious.

The desire to earn quick money used to affect my thoughts a lot because I used to think that what I needed was financial stability to gain some momentum and respect around me so that I could build an army of myself and attack the Hazel Moon pack for what they did to me.

At that time, I heard that a couple of rogues in the West Zone knew about a precious pearl and were looking for potential people who would like to join their adventure.

The pearl was known to cost $50 million. How could I leave an opportunity like that? I went there.

However, before I could even address the people who released the offer on the black market, I heard a group of rogues actually caught the two rogues to gain information about the so-called precious pearl.

I had already reached the place and saw how they gathered all the rogues who arrived there to question them. It was more like a mob setting.

Fear consumed me. I saw what they were doing to the she-wolves. Not only was their interrogation tougher, they were torturing them like hell.

While the rogues who weren’t volunteering were being killed, the innocent females with them were being raped before everyone in broad daylight.

I knew I had to be out of that place anyhow. And thus, even when I knew the rogues would come after me, I dashed away. The death they would offer me by shooting me looked more reasonable than that kind of humiliation.

It was nighttime, and my vision was quite better than that of the regular wolves, which I always thought was because I didn’t have other capabilities of a wolf.

I kept running, putting my life on the line, when suddenly someone held my hand and pulled me inside a tree.

He placed his hand over my mouth to stop me from screaming, and I looked at the brown orbs with my wide eyes.

"Shhh, I won’t harm you, but if you made a noise, both of us would get caught," The man had said.

"I will distract them," He said, walking out from inside the tree.

He had said he would distract them, but how could I trust a random stranger who looked like he knew them? Thus, as soon as he walked out, I rushed towards a different tree.

I heard him telling the rogues that I wasn’t there and saw the rogues passing by us. The lack of scent and the scent-hiding pendant helped me a lot at that time.

The man probably sensed I wasn’t there, and after half an hour, we met again near a pond, where I was hiding in a small cave, tending to my scratches from running away from the rogues.

"You didn’t trust me," the man said.

I felt a little guilty, but his eyes had no disappointment, just pure sadness.

"It’s okay. My family didn’t trust me. How could I expect any kind of trust from a stranger who didn’t even know me and saw me talking to those rogues," he said before smiling at me.

He sat close to me for some time before bringing out a small alcohol bottle. I thought he was going to start drinking, but he just smiled and offered it to me.

"I don’t drink," I said then, and he chuckled sadly.

"It’s for your wounds," he said, and I realized my stupidity.

We sat in silence for some time before I couldn’t take it anymore.

"So you are one of them?" I asked.

He looked at me briefly before looking at the shining moon in the middle of the lake. Because of the shimmering stars, it was more like winking back at us. It was calming, yet it gave the feeling of calm before the storm.

"I am not one of them. Just like you, I came here for the precious pearl, too. I wanted to use that money to send it home and try to be a little filial towards my family. After living in these woods for so long, I learned how to blend into the rogue groups. I tried to act like one of them, and they believed me," he said.

I nodded in understanding.

"How long have you been a rogue?" He asked.

"A newbie," I answered, not wanting to go into details.

"Forced?" he asked.

"Betrayed by my mate who chose my sister over the mate bond," I said.

His facial expression froze for a few seconds before returning to normal.

"You?" I asked.

"Almost seven years. I betrayed my family. That’s what they say," He said.

"And what’s the truth?" I had asked, but before he could say anything, we heard rustlings of leaves and knew someone was heading towards us.

We quickly stood in her place, alert.

The man looked at me with a wary expression before holding my hand and pushing me behind the rock.

"Don’t come out until they find you. Even if I die, don’t," His words were clear, and his eyes looked determined.

He fought for me that night. There were eight of them, and he killed five of them. There was a point in the fight when he was pushed to the ground while one of the rogues bit his shoulders, and a scream almost broke from my mouth, but the determined look in his eyes to protect me kept me still.

He shook his head at me briefly before fighting back the rogues and killing the one who bit him.

Probably due to my shadow or what, one of the rogues spotted me and rushed to me.

The rogue had grabbed my collar and pulled me out, pressing the pointed blade into my neck to stop the man from fighting.

"Stop, or we will kill her," the rogue said, and the man looked me in the eyes.

"I know I am not a person worthy of anyone’s trust, but can you trust me?" He asked.

I nodded at him. Even if all this was a lie and I was taking a major risk, I nodded for the man who was getting beaten and taking everything on himself to protect me.

He asked me to duck at a particular time, and I did. He pulled out the dagger from the other rogue’s hand and threw it at the man, the dagger going straight through his throat, killing him.

He was roughened up badly. He could barely move, but even after that, he held my hand and pulled me out of there, telling me it wasn’t safe and more rogues would be arriving to look for their friends.

I don’t remember how long we walked and ran, but after what felt like an eternity, we finally stopped at some distance, and he smiled at me.

"Thank you for being the first person to trust me in the last seven years," He said, tears brimming his eyes.

Even though he was the one who saved my life from those rogues and got roughened up to the point that he should’ve gone to the hospital rather than worrying about my life, he thanked me for trusting me. Just how little did he value his life?

I asked him what he was talking about before we were interrupted and why no one trusted him. I wanted to know more about this remarkable man who saved me.

That time, while cleaning his wounds with the same alcohol bottle he had offered me, he smiled sadly.

"I had a family, a very loving family, like the ones you see in the movies. I was the eldest. My younger brother was quite a prodigy kid, the strongest of all, and because of that, our mother used to entrust me to keep him out of trouble. I loved my family a lot. However, seven years ago, my brother found his mate." The man took a deep breath.

A rogue tear dropped from his eyes.

"He found his mate, who was a rogue and not a good woman. Since he found a mate and was strong, my father wanted to entrust an important position to him, but I wanted that position, too. Not because I was the eldest son but because that position came with a lot of hate and negativity. I wanted to keep my brother safe," The man smiled.

I saw how he deliberately poured alcohol directly over his wounds as if to feel the pain and let those tears fall freely.

"What happened next?" I had asked, curious about where this was going. We couldn’t go anywhere until morning, as the rogues were probably still looking for us, and they would settle or leave once it was morning.

I had plenty of time, and I thought hearing his story would be a good way to kill time. Yes, at that time, I hadn’t given it much thought.

I did not think this story would hold such a deep meaning to me.
