Chapter 282: Past Continued

VALENCIA’S POV

Past continued~~~~~

I watched the man who looked the strongest yet the loneliest. His shoulders were hunched, and the little vibrant energy I felt radiating from him when he fought for me vanished.

"It’s okay if you don’t want to share it with me," I smiled comfortingly at him.

However, he shook his head at me.

"I want to. It’s good to tell you because I know we won’t meet again and maybe I will feel a little lighter. I have been carrying the burden of this truth for quite some time," he said, wiping his hands before he nodded at me, an indication to follow him.

I stood from the place even when I didn’t want to walk. I understood we needed to keep moving to survive the night. We couldn’t afford to let our scent linger anywhere, and though I didn’t have a scent, the rogues would smell the primary scent of blood that we both were oozing.

"So I rebuked the idea. I started opposing the idea strongly, even going as far as fighting in the household," The man sighed.

I understood where this was going. If he opposed the idea, people would think he was after the position, and that was why he did not allow his parents to pave the way for his brother.

"I know I sounded unreasonable, and my little brother had grown up enough to care for things like the rest of the boys, but I was designed and asked to take care of him all my life. How could I let him get into danger willingly when I knew it might cost his life?" He asked.

He told me how everyone started to get annoyed by him, and at that time, he grew a little close to his brother’s mate, not because he liked her or something, but because she used to come to him to comfort him and make him agree to let his brother take the position.

His brother caught them together quite a few times, and he used to say he was deliberately coveting his mate. Honestly, his brother didn’t even want the position. He was being forced into this because he was the strongest of two and the prodigy kid.

"What happened after that?" I asked when he suddenly paused and leaned on a tree.

We stopped there for some time, and I sat, keeping my distance from him.

"I told you his mate wasn’t a good person, right? The man asked, and I nodded to indicate I was listening carefully.

"She planned an attack on the pack with her rogue friends. They killed our parents. There was heavy bloodshed all over. My brother was celebrating with everyone. I rushed to the site and saw his mate with the knife in her hands, the knife that killed our parents," The man sniffled, tears flowing down his cheeks.

I could see that he was in pain. It was breaking his heart to think about all those things. These raw emotions couldn’t be faked just like that. I wanted to stand and comfort him, but I didn’t feel he would appreciate it.

The last thing I wanted him to think was that I was pitying his situation because I had been there.

"I confronted that girl, and she tried to run away. She was slick. Though she appeared timid and innocent, she could fight really well, something we didn’t know about. In fact, now that I look back in time, it feels like she was there just to attack our pack," The man said.

I hummed, noticing how he was deliberately drifting from the topic to get a hold of his emotions.

"When my brother found us, things turned like I could’ve never imagined. That woman rejected the mate bond and said we both were in love. I was too shocked to react. Before that, she had pushed that knife with my parent’s blood in my hand. Imagine holding the weapon that killed your parents," The man said before a whimper left his mouth.

I saw him clenching his palms on the ground as he sat, fisting the soil as tightly as he could.

It was worse than I had imagined.

"Didn’t you tell your brother you were innocent, and it was all that woman’s fault?" I asked.

He scoffed.

"My brother, in fact, everyone thought I had been spending time with her because I fell for her and made her leave my brother. Besides, I was already causing a ruckus about the position, so they thought that I killed my parents because they announced the position would go to my brother," he said.

He covered his face with his hands.

His shaking shoulders were enough an indication that he was crying, sobbing silently so I wouldn’t hear and think he was pathetic to be crying like a grown man.

It was instinctive.

I stood in my place and walked to him, even though it was risky and dangerous to my life because I didn’t know him.

But the voice in my heart said that he was indeed alone and wouldn’t hurt me.

I sat there and pulled him in for a hug.

However, rather than hugging me, he slid down and placed his head on my lap, like a kid putting his head on his mother’s lap.

"I just wanted to take care of my brother. But I had never thought the people I loved with all I had would turn against me. He could’ve killed me. But he left me, and it was the fact that he let me go that hurt me the most. It would’ve been better if he had just killed me," The man sobbed.

I placed my hand on his head to comfort him.

"He had it worse. Everything fell onto his shoulders, and he was just a kid. The more I wanted to protect him, the more I made it worse," he said.

"Do you blame him? Your brother, I mean," I asked.

"To this date, I never blamed my brother because he believed what was presented to him. How can I blame him when he had it worse than me?" The man asked.

He continued to stay for a few more minutes until he calmed down.

"Are you feeling okay?" I asked the man, and he nodded before apologizing and sitting straight, maintaining his distance from me.

"So you never found your mate?" I asked to change the topic.

The man smiled at me.

"I did. But I rejected her. She was a human," the man whispered.

I didn’t like the way he was putting things.

So what if she was human? Do we, people without wolves or humans, don’t deserve to be mates?

I felt triggered and was about to ask him when he spoke again.

"She was married to a man. She obviously felt attracted to me when we met, to the point that she was ready to go to the hotel room with me for a one-night stand." The man took a deep breath.

I was shocked.

I always think people are judgemental, but wasn’t I doing the same?

"We indeed went to the hotel room. I was more interested in her than sleeping with her because she was a human, and I didn’t want to ruin anything because of the mate bond. She didn’t tell me anything. But when she went to the restroom, her phone had a message for her husband, who asked her where she was, and the kids were waiting for her," The man rubbed his face in frustration.

"I don’t blame her. The mate bond is strong like that. And since she, as a human, was oblivious to what was going on, she must’ve thought that it was all due to alcohol.

She was in a happy, lovely marriage; how could I ruin it? That’s why I rejected her and walked out," The man said.

We shared a few more things about each other, and since he told me so much, I also told him how I couldn’t turn into my wolf, which gave me my scentless nature, and how my parents kind of disowned me.

How I was betrayed and how I have been living on my own.

By the time we finished, it was almost dawn, and it was time to lady ways as he dropped me into the forests near the University, which was no man’s land after the Dark Callisto forests area.

"What’s your name?" I asked, wanting to remember him for saving my life.

"Arnold," That’s what he told me.

~~~~~~~~
"Are you not going to say anything? Will you keep looking at me?" Alfonso said, and I snapped out of my thoughts, looking at him with pity.
His story matched perfectly with what Maverick told me, and thinking that my man had been living in a misunderstanding and suffering in hell for so many years ached my heart.
"So you were supposed to be an alpha," I said, and the man smiled.
"I told you, it was all about the position," He smiled sadly, making me smile back.
