Chapter 96: Comfort

"Dante!" screamed Mathis as he bolted up the steps, taking them two at a time. He had no idea where his boss could be, but he needed to find him fast. "Dante!!" he bellowed, his voice echoing around the stairwell.

"Common room on the fourth floor," announced one of the men as he stuck his head out the door. "He’s dealing with a conflict between us and the newbies."

"I don’t fucking care what he is dealing with!" growled Mathis, his eyes flashing dangerously. "I need him now!"

Continuing to race up the stairs, he burst through the door leading to the fourth floor.

"Dante!" Mathis called out. Only this time, there was a response. Both Dante and Tank raced out of the common room, their faces pale as they heard him scream. "Something is happening to Ghost! You need to come now!"

"Ghost?!?" demanded both Dante and Tank at the same time. Pushing past Mathis, they entered the stairwell, determined to race upstairs to where Ghost was.

"Why are you going up? He’s on the first floor," grumbled Mathis, quickly catching up with the two men.

However, he was not expecting Dante or Tank to stop nearly as fast as they did. "What do you mean, he’s on the first floor?" demanded Dante, his voice low and soft as he stared at Mathis. "He shouldn’t be anywhere near the first floor."

"Well, I don’t know what you are thinking," replied Mathis, rolling his eyes. "But I was talking to him on the first floor before his tongue was ripped out of his mouth."

"Excuse me?" asked Dante, his head cocked to the side.

Tank, not caring about Ghost or his tongue at the moment, turned around and started to run up the stairs, taking them two and three steps at a time. Ghost was supposed to be looking after Hattie.

He had to find his Lamb; everything else could wait until later.

Flying into his apartment, he headed straight for the opened bedroom door. "Hattie!" he screamed, looking around the room. Nothing was disturbed in the slightest. Even the bed was perfectly made, a testament that no one had slept on it.

"Little Lamb!" Tank bellowed, hurrying over to the bathroom. "I need you to answer me now!"

’She’s not here,’ growled the voice in his head. Spinning around helplessly, Tank tried to calm himself down enough to figure out what was going on. ’Traitor. Lamb killed. Lamb gone.’

The voice wasn’t making any sense... and its howling in between words were making it even harder for Tank to understand what it had said. But the grief the creature inside of him was feeling was undeniable.

Hattie was gone.

It was like his soul had left his body as his legs gave out from underneath him. Falling to the floor, Tank tilted back his head and screamed as loud as he could.

’Find traitor,’ hissed the voice inside of him. ’Find traitor, watch justice.’

Tank’s screams were quickly cut off when he heard what the demon inside of him had said. Hattie was gone. There was a traitor... and she had gotten her justice before she disappeared.

Rising unsteadily to his feet, Tank gripped the back of the couch. Now he knew why her words sounded so much like a goodbye. She saw this coming... figured it out somehow... and wanted to make sure that he didn’t do anything stupid.

She told him to take care of himself until she came back. That she would raise him from the dead if he got hurt or killed and kill him herself.

She was coming back.

The demon said that she was gone... not that she was dead.

She was coming back to him. He couldn’t doubt that or her for a minute.

And if she was coming back to him, then he needed to make sure that this place was safe enough for her to return to.

That meant finding the traitor.

----

Dante and Mathis made it back to the first floor in record time, only to see a big crowd in front of them.

"Make room!" cried out Mathis and the men parted like the Red Sea.

It wasn’t hard to understand what had caught their attention. In the center of the circle was Ghost, blood pouring from his mouth as he tried to scream. Every second, a new cut appeared on his flesh.

But the cuts were too thin to be made from a knife or any other weapon. They barely bled, leaving only a thin line with the tiniest amount of blood beading at the top.

"What is going on?!?" demanded Dante, turning to look at the nearest man.

"I don’t know, Sir," replied the soldier, bowing his head to Dante. "When I arrived, I found him like that."

"Mathis?" asked Dante, turning to his second in command.

"Don’t ask me. I told him that his foster father showed up out of nowhere, looking for him, and the next second, his tongue was lying on the floor, and there was blood everywhere. We need to stop the bleeding, or he is going to die," announced Mathis, going to kneel beside his long-time friend.

Looking deep into Ghost’s eyes, he smiled at the other man. "Don’t worry, Etienne," he said softly. "We are going to save you. It’s not like you were using your tongue a lot anyway. You might not even miss it."

Reaching forward, he gripped Ghost’s hand, letting him know that he wasn’t alone.

"Step back, Bishop," growled a new voice. The voice was so deep and guttural that Mathis had a hard time figuring out who had given him an order.

With a look of anger on his face, Mathis gently dropped Ghost’s hand, only to turn around and see an enraged Tank stalking toward him.

"Tank," murmured Dante softly, lying a single hand on his chest. "This isn’t the time. Bishop is just offering comfort to a fallen soldier."

"Comfort?" purred Tank, his eyes turning an orange color. "Did you ask him if he deserved our comfort?"
